Dear Chamber Members, Summer is quickly approaching, as Memorial Day has passed and we enter the active summer period. I hope you have been able to get out and take advantage of some of the nice weather we have had recently. The nice weather is a sure sign of another annual rite of passage –graduations. Graduates are still facing a challenging job market and costly secondary education expenses. I’m happy to announce that the Middleton Chamber has been able to help one very deserving MHS student in one of these areas. The chamber has recently reestablished an annual Excellence in Education Scholarship program. I had the pleasure of presenting this year’s recipient with the chamber scholarship a few weeks ago. She is planning to attend Northwestern University and study pre- dental in the fall. The Chamber staff and board have talked about doing this for some time. I’m very happy it has become a reality this spring. As members you all played a part in helping to make this happen and should feel good about your contribution. On May 7th a small group of member businesses, board members and our executive director Van Nutt went to the Capitol to visit several of our State legislative representatives. They included Senators John Erpenbach, Fred Risser and Representative Dianne Hesselbein. It gave them a chance to tell us about their priorities and concerns and for us to build some rapport with them - an effort to build an open dialogue with the local business community. The chamber hopes to be able to continue to do this on a semi-annual basis moving forward. Question: How long has Van Nutt been at the helm of the Middleton Chamber as Executive Director? Answer: 10 glorious

years. Please join me in congratulating and thanking Van on his tenure. He has guided the Chamber through many challenges and has done an excellent job in making it a successful organization. The Middleton Chamber continues to grow, with many new and diverse members. Year-to-date the chamber has added over 50 new members. Your membership gives you a multitude of opportunities to be involved with and connect with other business people. Get Moving Middleton is held the first Thursday of each month and is a great venue to make connections. The next chamber Business Social Hour will be held on June 5th at Capital Brewery. Our various committees meet regularly and allow for more active involvement and professional development. The Chamber’s annual Golf Outing is set for July 17th and will have some additional non-golf opportunities for newer and non-golfers. All of this can be found at the Chamber website. Also, be sure to check out the new online registration for events. Finally, Middleton will be hosting the All City Swim meet in July and I want to say good luck to all the swimmers and divers!

How Did You Get From There To Here? Profiles on the vocational journey

Interview by Monica Schlicht Monica is the Vice President at BMO Harris Bank, Middleton

Meet: Nissa Judd

President, Integral Building Systems & Affiliated Communications of Wisconsin

You are not President of one company, but two companies, so we’ve got some ground to cover. Take us back to the beginning of your professional journey. Out of high school, I started at Mid Plains Communications and that’s where I got in the telephony side of things. My Dad was VP of Operations at Mid Plains and he said “Hey there is a job in Accounting”. So I started there and today several of those people who I worked with 20 years ago work for me. From accounting, I went into customer service. I went to college for awhile and decided it wasn’t for me. Mid Plains merged with Computers Plus to form Chorus Networks and I was one of the key people to help with the transition… a subject matter expert if you will. I was doing Project Management at that point. TDS bought Chorus and I quit just shy of being with them for 15 years. This leads us to your current role today. You and your husband Kevin are business partners, right? My husband Kevin, who I went to high school with, started his own company with another guy, so I went to work for them as an Operations Manager right after TDS. I found some things that were not good there from a financial perspective, and I was pregnant with our first child. We tried to buy his partner out but he wasn’t interested, so we decided to leave and started Integral Building Systems. Tell us more about the two companies you run and how they marry. IBS had been in business for probably 2 years, Beth Viney, who I worked with at TDS, was their #1 salesperson in the nation. It is hard to find a good sales person, so Kevin and I always said if Beth was ever available, we want her. Well I found out she quit TDS and I emailed her the same day and said,

“We need to talk”. She came in; come to find out she had between 10 – 15 companies that reached out just like I did, so she had offers galore. She decided to come work for us to be part of a small company where she could feel like she’d make a difference. At that point, TDS decided that they were going to get out of CPE business, where both Beth and I come from. We said “wait a minute; this seems like a no brainer”. Being a distributor costs a significant amount of money. So I called my Dad who had moved to Texas and worked for a company called Affiliated Communications. I asked him if his owners would like to talk about coming up here, so we can hang onto their distributorship. So after a couple of months, we started Affiliated Communications of Wisconsin with IBS as part owner and Affiliated Communications of Texas as part owner. At TDS, you were a champion of exceeding customer expectations. How did you and how do you make the customer experience memorable? I have high expectations for customer service and I get mad when I get poor customer service. When I was at Mid Plains I received several letters from customers about the great service I provided. Now realize that I would bend some rules to make sure they got taken care of. One of the things I don’t like about bigger companies is that there is so much red tape and policies… I don’t follow them. At our company, customer service is #1. Keely and Amy are our main customer service people. I worked with Amy 20 years ago when I worked at Mid Plains and I’ve worked with Keely since the Chorus days. I feel very fortunate that we’ve known the people that we are hiring and how they work. You’ve managed and led people throughout your journey. At what stage in your life did you know you were meant to lead people? (Laughs) Probably when I was 3!! In fact, I see a lot of that in my oldest daughter, who is 5. She is such a mini-me. I’ve always been a leader, not a follower. Did I ever think I’d own one company, much less two? No. I’ve always had “champagne taste with a beer pocketbook”. I knew I needed to support myself and I believed in myself and knew that I could do it. What you’ve done requires discipline and focus. Do you deploy any strategies or goal setting that has helped you during your journey?

Not really. I work hard and I play hard. Anyone who knows me knows that Oprah is big in my life. I attended two of her shows when they were running and the power you feel just sitting in the studio before she even was there, brings tears to my eyes and I am not a crier. She has helped me feel the confidence to do anything. Since her show, I’ve gotten more involved with non profits. At a President’s breakfast, Don Johnson had indicated that there were almost 100 homeless students in Middleton. I was floored. After the breakfast, I got a hold of Don, and I said “I need to change this”. He connected me with the right people, including Jackson Fonder, Executive Director of MOM at the time. After our meeting, Jackson said “I would like you on my Board”. I’ve been on MOM’s board for approaching two years now. Do you want to speak anymore to the work you do in the community, because it is amazing. In addition to MOM, we do a lot with Gio’s Garden, JDRF, and cancer research. Since we’ve started focusing that way, it has helped more from a business perspective. It could just be that the energy we’re putting out, we’re getting back. I don’t know but it’s working. For both Gio’s and MOM’s new buildings, we provided all of the technology; cabling, security, phone system and labor to install. A lot of suppliers donated to us since they knew we were working with nonprofits. Any books that you’ve read along the way that have guided you in your journey? It’s weird how my reading tastes have varied over the years. Honestly one of my favorite books that I bought for all of my employees as a Christmas gift is “The Automatic Millionaire”. It’s a quick, easy read and inspired me to act right now. I just read “The Carrot Principle”. Two times per month we have a carrot meeting and discuss how we will approach recognition. I also recently read the Amanda Knox story. It was 460 pages that I read in 3 days. I am always reading something; usually 2, maybe 3 or 4 books at a time. Closing Note Aside from the demands of her professional work, Nissa and her husband Kevin play very hard with their two daughters Cicaida, age 5 and Tierney, age 3. On date nights, you’ll often find the married couple with pen and cocktail napkin, crafting their next plan. 3
