These days, it’s almost impossible to travel without encountering a digital screen. From major thoroughfares to rural highways, airports to railway systems, digital signage has become an integral part of the travel experience—alerting travelers about road and weather conditions, traffic delays and even missing children.

Digital signage can engage drivers, shorten perceived wait times, improve safety and enhance the overall travel experience.

When first established in 1913, a transportation agency was tasked with building paved roads to connect its major counties and get the state “out of the mud.” Today, this Department of Transportation (DOT) focuses on maintaining safe and efficient roadways, as well as air and rail transportation systems across the state. With 1,379 miles of interstate highways, 125 airports, 4,800 miles of railroad tracks and 15 public ports, the agency plays a crucial role as one of America’s transportation crossroads in the twenty-first century. The transportation department was using portable changeable message sign (CMS) boards to display information about air quality,

construction delays, weather conditions and AMBER Alerts to travelers along busy stretches of highway. Yet, many of the CMS boards could not be programmed remotely. This required an employee to travel to each sign in order to change the messaging. Adding to this challenge, the entire statewide sign system was manually tracked on paper. That meant the recorded location of sign boards wasn’t always accurate—and finding those lost signs wasted hours of time and money. The state DOT sought a better way to communicate important messages to drivers while improving worker productivity and safety, and reducing costs. Verizon recommended a digital signage solution, which entailed outfitting each CMS board with a Sierra Wireless modem. These wireless devices allow workers to remotely update signs at any time from central headquarters. This real-time messaging data travels over the reliable and secure Verizon Wireless network, helping to ensure quick, uninterrupted connectivity. The signs were also upgraded to comply with interoperability standards set by the National Transportation Communications for Intelligent Transportation System Protocol (NTCIP). This upgrade allowed the agency to integrate the signs into its central management system to automatically track the location of each board.

This digital signage solution eliminates the need—and cost—of dispatching someone to the site each time. Plus, the ability to update signs immediately to reflect changing weather conditions, accidents and other hazards greatly improves safety for both drivers and agency employees. With 24/7 remote messaging and no more lost signs to track down, the agency estimated savings of up to $10 per month, per unit, in addition to approximately $25 per hour for worker time spent looking for lost signs or traveling to manually update each CMS communication.

Restaurants Today’s tech-savvy diners are looking to screens to find the information that’s important to them. A digital board that shows close-ups of appealing menu items can be effective at whetting appetites and influencing customers’ purchase behaviors. Easily make menu changes to accommodate new options, update pricing and remove sold-out food items. Not only that, but you can ensure compliance with the latest local and federal regulations by displaying the necessary nutritional information next to each item.
