Kids Helping Kids at Saratoga Elementary School This spring, our Sunday School students have been raising funds to help our backpack school, Saratoga Elementary. Southwood supplies 80 food-filled backpacks each week to students, plus our volunteers provide support in the classroom and at fun activities like the fun fair, science fair and trunk-r-treat. Our Sunday School students are also getting involved in helping the kids at Saratoga by focusing in these three areas:

Celebrate!

It’s a Party! Birthdays are fun ways that children celebrate growing up! But what if your parents didn’t have the money/time to celebrate them? Our goal is to make Birthday Packs (birthday cake mix, frosting, sprinkles, and candles) wrapped like a present for each child on their birthday!

Learn

Crayons, markers, scissors—all are much needed items in a classroom. Saratoga teachers supply most of their classroom supplies. Our goal is to provide the teachers with gift cards to purchase much needed classroom supplies. Plus, students will be collecting colorful EXPO markers through the month of April to donate to the classrooms.

Snuggle

Did you have a favorite blanket or stuffed animal that you slept with as a child? Imagine not having a bed or a place where you knew you could always sleep. Our goal is to make sleep packs (pillow and a blanket) for kids to call their own!

Join the Sunday School students in helping kids in our

community by giving a donation at Education Station or in the offering plate with “Sunday School Mission Project” in the memo. Help them reach their goal of $5,000!

Caring 3 Tips for Everyday Physical Touch

Physical touch is a powerful way of communicating you care, even in little ways. It could be holding someone’s hand, hugging, or a friendly pat on the back. ff For your spouse—Hold hands while praying together, showing your unity in all parts of life, including your spirituality. ff For your parent—Give a hug when you greet them or say goodbye. Touch their hand when you are talking with them. People crave human contact, especially as they grow older and get less. ff For your teen—Give a back rub to show your love and support for them when they need it most. Little gestures add up to a lot!

The Gospel of Mark led by Pastor Karl-John • 4-week study Thursdays beginning April 12 • 6:30–8pm The Gospel of Mark reveals how Jesus is God’s good news to us! We’ll explore four key questions asked in the first half of this gospel to discover the purpose and meaning of life in Christ. Register at southwoodlutheran.org or at Southwood Central.

VBS depends upon heros like you!

Adults! Could you be a hero by helping during the mornings of one of the two weeks (June 4–8 or June 11–15) or with preparations, setup, cleanup? You can sign up at southwoodlutheran.org/vbs or at Education Station.

Safety Training

Thursday, April 5 • 6:30–7:30pm in the Fellowship Hall To help ensure that Southwood is safe for everyone, we have asked the Lincoln Police Department to provide safety training to all members—especially Sunday morning volunteers. We want to be proactive in ensuring the church is a safe place to be at all times, especially when we have hundreds of people gathered together. This presentation will cover personal, workplace and active shooter safety training. It will give tips on how to protect yourself in these situations and there will be time for any questions anyone has about safety.

SAVE THE DATE! Women’s Summer Study

Thursdays, June 21—July 26 • 6:30–8pm Carve out some time for yourself this summer and enjoy a weekly dose of inspiration, laughter and possibly a few tears. Gather your friends, or join a table group to meet new people. Faith growth is so much better when done in community. Mark your calendars and watch for registration details coming soon!
