KIND LIVING WITH SUE Why you should have Spirulina and how to make it yummy

Spirulina is perhaps one of the most nutrient dense substances on the planet. It’s a form of algae just loaded with powerful nutrients. It’s approximately 65-70% protein (compared to chicken which sits at 20%), has a full spectrum of B vitamins, contains phycocyanins (promote stem cell production) and antioxidants, and is rich in GLA (gammalinolenic acid), omega-3 fatty acids and enzymes. It also has a high chlorophyll content, which is a known blood builder and detoxifier.

Inside this issue

So, the benefits are clear; the trouble is there is a distinct “fishy seaweed” smell and taste which can be off-putting for sure. I had stopped taking spirulina because of this and in recent months started to notice its absence from my diet. In an effort to reintroduce spirulina, I went back to my “test kitchen”. After experimenting, I have developed a refreshing drink and yummy treat that I wish to share with you (your cells will thank you!).

Products I love! I have had great fun researching items to add to my roster of “products that I love”. It occurred to me recently that, in addition to the products having a strong ethical affiliation, I have had the good fortune of getting to know the founders/ owners/ operators of these companies. These people are, without a doubt, passionate about their products and sincere in their commitment to fair business practices steeped in integrity. The newest company to join the “list” is KiraGrace. KiraGrace is a beautiful yoga clothing line founded by Kira Karmazin. Kira has a wealth of experience designing clothing and is a seasoned yoga practitioner herself. Having designed for Victoria’s

Secret, she is also familiar with many of the challenges women face finding functional active-wear that is also attractive. In addition to the clothing being beautiful and functional, I was also impressed to learn about their active partnership with the not-for-profit organization Off the Mat, Into the World. Read more about their story and view their beautiful products at www.kiragrace.com and www.offthematintotheworld.org.

Kind Living is the first Canadian company to introduce both GIVE scent and KiraGrace to the Canadian audience. Check out the Kind Living Boutique right next door to the studio prior to and after classes. I am also available by appointment to view and discuss items.

The launch last month of GIVE scent has been a huge success. I am happy to announce that a new order will be in shortly, and I have also brought in their new GIVE GREEN scent, a fresh, citrusbased scent that has appeal for both men and women. You can …continued on page 4

Our Kula We had no intention of getting another dog, much less a rambunctious puppy. The puppy, on the other hand had strong ideas of her own. Robb loves to get up early and embrace the solitude of early morning hours. While enjoying the elixir of his morning coffee, his life was unceremoniously flipped upside down (inversions are supposed to be good for you!). Like a scene from a Disney movie (minus the ever present mother abandonment issues), our backyard was invaded by adorable puppies that had escaped from a few doors down. The puppies were doing their puppy thing, and Robb tried to help the tired mom who was frantically trying to round up her pups. Amidst the squirming and chewing, a certain pup decided to take another approach. She collapsed at Robb’s feet and sent him a look that completely unravelled him. …continued on page 4

What I’m drinking Basil Lemonade Looking for a refreshing and hydrating summer drink? I have been really enjoying my basil lemonade. My basil plants are thriving in this summer heat, and I have been making use of them by adding basil to water with some fresh lemon and a touch of maple syrup. Give it a try! If you use purple basil it will give you a fun version of pink lemonade! • • • • •

1 litre Mason Jar large fist of fresh basil juice of 1 lemon maple syrup or raw honey to taste water

Sue’s Spirulemonade • • • • •

1 litre Mason Jar Juice of 1 lemon 1 T of goji berries 1 teaspoon (more if you wish) of Giddy yoyo Spirulina 1 teaspoon (more to taste) of raw honey (I love Lavender Hills raw honey with bee pollen) or maple syrup, or other liquid sweetener of choice (I don’t like Agave) water

Kind Living with Sue Kula continued… As if on cue, as he reached down to pick her up, she washed him with puppy kisses to seal the deal. Smart girl. My boys were no help whatsoever. Their earnest pleas to “do all the work” buckled me at the knees. So there you have it. Our busy house just got busier. Our busy house just got another burst of unconditional love (my 4:00 am mantra when puppy has had enough of her kennel). There’s another side to this story, which is also the inspiration for puppy’s name. This puppy truly is a community dog in every sense of the word. Her “ahem” ancestry is an assorted mixture of various community canines. We’re not quite sure exactly who all contributed to her unique DNA, but we do know she cashed in big on the cute genes! She has also helped us get to know our neighbours in a lovely way. The community aspect continued as a beloved local business owner who lives a few blocks away also fell under the wicked puppy spell. We will be helping to care for her pup as needed, further building the community spirit. This “community” theme resonated for Robb and me at a deep level. Despite our reclusive tendencies, we value a strong sense of community. That’s one of the reasons we love Orillia, and one of the reasons we do the work we do. Kula is a Sanskrit word for community, and it seemed a perfect fit. Welcome Kula!

Spirulina cacao balls I have adapted this from a David Wolfe recipe. These are delicious!

Please know that I fully stand behind any product I represent. So, if you are not absolutely thrilled with any product you purchase from me, I will not hesitate to give you a full refund. I am convinced that these products represent true value...ethically, environmentally, economically....and I hope you do too!

¼ cup hemp seeds ½ cup Giddy Yoyo cacao powder 2 T Giddy Yoyo spirulina 2 T melted coconut oil 3 T raw honey 1 T unsweetened coconut (plus more to roll balls in) 1 T chia seeds pinch of sea salt 1 tsp vanilla Mix above ingredients. Make into balls and roll in coconut. Freeze. We think these are best frozen and allowed to soften a few minutes before eating. They rawk!
