Kingdom Quest Year 2 - Lesson 5 - 2

Pre-Session Singing:

(10 minutes)

Purpose: When all children are in one group singing, it is easy for new children to join the group and immediately get involved. When the music can be correlated, it introduces the theme for the day. Choose two to three songs and list them here.

Large Group Opening: (15 minutes) Purpose: The puppet demonstrates the need that will be met in today’s lesson. The scripts are not written verbatim, but give a story line in which the group leader can interact with the puppet. The children are introduced to the take home point and then interact with God’s Word as they experience the Bible event.

Puppet Presentation: Purpose: The puppet demonstrates the need that will be met in today’s lesson. The scripts are not written verbatim, but give a story line in which the group leader can interact with the puppet.

Judy comes out wearing a baseball cap. She is very excited because she went to her first day of summer day camp. She is even more excited because, even though she was the littlest one there, she was made leader of the day. The presenter asks Judy what she got to do as leader of the day. She rattles off a list of things the leader does, including being the first one in the line, picking out the movie for quiet time and leading the kids in the Pledge of Allegiance. The presenter says that Judy must have felt very important, being leader of the day. Then he tells Judy that her being chosen leader of the day, even though she was the youngest child, reminds him of today’s Bible event. In the Bible event, the children will learn that God used Samuel, who was now grown up, to pick a new leader, a new king, for the country of Israel. Samuel was surprised to learn that the one God had chosen was David, the youngest of eight brothers. The presenter tells Judy that from this true story, we learn that God can use even young children to do important jobs. The presenter teaches Judy the take home point. *I AM GOD’S CHILD—God has big plans for me. He says the first line and Judy responds with the second line. After practicing it with Judy several times, the presenter then teaches the take home point to the children.

Bible Event:

Imagination Theater

Imagination Theater is audience participation drama where the Bible event is told in creative fashion, using children as actors. The Imagination Box contains the Bible and other special props used for the drama. Begin by removing the Bible and explain that it is God’s Word, telling us of the wonderful deeds God has done. Then remove an imaginary hat and place it on your head. This is your Imagination Hat. Invite the children to put on theirs as well. They will also use their imaginations to picture the events the Bible tells us about. Some will even use their imaginations to help act out these events. Distribute props to actors as they are called forward at the beginning of the presentation. Have them sit to the side until they are called on stage.

Kingdom Quest Year 2 - Lesson 5 - 3

For this presentation, you will need to pull up the following Bible characters:  Samuel on one side of the stage, with Jesse  Seven sons, on the other side of the stage  David, far off stage (should be the smallest child) Presenter: Let me read to you about an event that really happened many years ago. As a matter of fact, it was many, many years before Jesus was born. This is a story about a little boy for whom God had big plans. There was a prophet named Samuel. A prophet’s job was to tell people special messages from God. God wanted to rule and guide his people. He used prophets to help them know what he wanted them to do. Now, here comes Samuel. Bring Samuel on stage. God told Samuel that he was not happy with the king. The king was Saul, and King Saul had failed to follow God’s word. No longer was he to be king. God wanted to choose a new king. He wanted Samuel to go to just the right person, pour oil from this horn over his head and say, “You will now be God’s chosen king.” But, Samuel didn’t know whom God was choosing and God showed him. God told him to go to Bethlehem. He would have a special church service there and bring an offering to the Lord. At that church service would be a man named Jesse. Jesse steps forward. God told Samuel that one of Jesse’s sons would be the new king. Here’s the first son. When Samuel saw him, and how handsome and big he was, Samuel felt certain that this was the one God would choose. After all, he was the oldest son. But, was he the one? “No,” said God. “Then, what about the next son,” Samuel asked God, “Is he the one?” But God said that he wasn’t the one either. One by one, Samuel went through each of Jesse’s sons who were at that place. Each time, he asked God if any of them were the ones chosen by God to be the new king. Let’s count them. Count, “One, two, three, four, five, six, seven.” “No, the new king I’ve chosen is not among them,” said God. So Samuel asked Jesse, (whisper in his ear.) “Do you have any more sons?” Jesse said, “The youngest one is watching the sheep.” “Well, go get him,” said Samuel. And they brought in the youngest brother, who was taking care of the sheep. Does anyone want to guess what his name was? Yes, it’s David. Watch what happened, next.

Kingdom Quest Year 2 - Lesson 5 - 4

Samuel took a horn filled with oil and poured it on David’s head and told him, “God is choosing you to do big things for him. You will be king of his people.” God’s Spirit then filled David with power, because God was with him. Now, boys and girls, do you see how God had big plans for David? But, what about you? Does God have big plans for you? Yes. God has big plans for each one of you. Remember that Jesus gave his life for you. Because of Jesus and what he did on the cross, you may be God’s children. God has big plans for you. That may not mean that you’ll be a king, but it does mean, like David, you can do wonderful things to serve God’s people. Jesus will be with you to give you the power to do so. So remember, *I AM GOD’S CHILD—God has big plans for me. End with a brief prayer.

Kingdom Quest Year 2 - Lesson 5 - 5

Small Group Application: (30 minutes) Purpose: Smaller groups enable children to develop closer relationships with adults and peers in the church. As you reinforce the take home point with a fun hands-on activity, discuss the Bible event. Be sure to repeat the take home point several times. Say the first part and have the children respond with the second phrase. Application questions help kids apply the take home point to their daily lives. Close this session by gathering your small group for prayer. Let the kids pray!

During the small group application time, discuss the following questions and points: Who did God choose to be the new king of Israel? (David.) David was young, so why did God choose him to be the next king? (Because God looked at his heart and saw that David loved the Lord.) What lesson can we learn from David? (That God can use little children to do big jobs.) What big jobs can God use you for? (Answers will vary, but may include: telling others about Jesus, helping someone with a problem, or praying for someone who is hurt.)

Activity 1: “Anointing Horn” Craft Supplies: one appendix copied on cardstock per child

To make: 1. Cut out the horn. 2. Decorate it with crayons or markers. 3. Tape it into a cone shape. 4. Place sticker with the Take Home Point onto the horn. To discuss: As the children work, review the Bible event. Talk with the children about ways God can use them to do big jobs. Practice the take home point. *I AM GOD’S CHILD—God has big plans for me.

Activity 2: “Horn of Oil” Snack Explain to the children that in Bible times, people used a ram’s horn to anoint a person for a job given by God, such as being a priest or the king. That meant that God was setting that person aside for a special job and giving the person the power to do the job. Pass out the ice cream cones. Have each child stick a marshmallow on the end of the cone. (This is only to keep the caramel sauce from dripping out of the bottom of the cone.) Let each child drizzle a spoonful of caramel topping into the cone. Explain that this reminds them of the oil Samuel used to anoint David.

Kingdom Quest Year 2 - Lesson 5 - 6

As the children eat, discuss the small group application questions and practice the take home point. *I AM GOD’S CHILD—God has big plans for me. Remind the children that they can do the jobs God has for them, because, just as God poured out his Spirit on David, Jesus pours out his power on them. HEALTHY SNACK OPTION: Talk to the children about the big plans God has for them and remind them that it is a good idea to take care of themselves as best they can so that they are ready for those plans. Have a healthy snack, like carrots or whole grain bread and water to help encourage being energetic and vitalized for God’s big plans every day!

Activity 3: “Here’s the Challenge” Game Directions: 1. The object of the game is for the children to work together to plan and meet several challenges given by the shepherd. 2. The children will be given two minutes to complete each challenge. 3. The shepherd will give tally marks for each different way the children meet each challenge. The number of tally marks will show the children at the end of the game on which challenge they did the best. 4. This game will be challenging for this age group. During the planning time, let the children experiment with the materials. If they get stuck, it is okay for the shepherd to step in and give some hints. 5. Give the group a 30-second warning before the time runs out. 6. After the planning time, the children should take turns demonstrating to the shepherd the ideas they came up with. 7. Each sheet of paper is for a different challenge. As the children demonstrate their solutions to the challenge, make tally marks for each successful solution. 8. When finished, count up the tally marks on each paper. Which group activity was most successful? Challenge #1: Set the buckets six feet apart from each other and put the balls in one of the buckets. How many ways can you get the balls from one bucket to the other bucket without touching the balls with their hands or feet? Challenge #2: How many different ways can you spin the hula hoops? Challenge #3: How many different shapes can you make on the floor with a jump rope? To discuss: Remind the children that, just as they had to plan how they would meet the challenges, God has challenges for their lives and God has big plans for them. Those plans might include telling others about him, showing love to other people, helping people, being a Kingdom Quest Year 2 - Lesson 5 - 7

good friend, or plans for the jobs they will have when they grow up. We can be an important part of God’s kingdom because Jesus died on the cross for us and gives us the power to do the plans God has for us. Practice the take home point. *I AM GOD’S CHILD—God has big plans for me.

Prayer Time: Ask God to help you know and carry out the plans he has for you. Ask Jesus to send his Spirit to help you carry out God’s plans.

Kingdom Quest Year 2 - Lesson 5 - 8

Large Group Wrap-Up: (10 minutes) Purpose: The crazy bird puppet, Albie, struggles with learning the take home point. The leader shows an example of each small group application activity from this lesson and says the first phrase of the take home point. The kids respond with their phrase. They try to teach the puppet the take home point, but each time he confuses words or concepts. After three attempts, he finally gets it right and sings the correct take home point in a silly opera-like voice.

Singing:

(Optional)

Lesson Review with Puppet Skit: Presenter shows Albie a craft made in Activity 1. Then the kids attempt to teach Albie the take home point. Presenter says to kids: Kids say: Presenter says to Albie: Albie says:

“I am God’s child…” “…God has big plans for me.” “I am God’s child…” “…Horn, Corn, Born, Cat, Hat, Bat…?”

Presenter shows an example of the next activity done in small group and repeats first phrase to kids. The kids say the correct response trying to teach Albie the take home point. Continue in this manner with the presenter showing example of each activity. Here are Albie’s responses: Albie’s response to Activity 2 sample: “…God has big plans for a hippopotamus.” Albie’s response to Activity 3 sample: “…God has big plans for cheese.” “Albie, listen one last time. I am God’s child…” Kids say: “…God has big plans for me.” Presenter says to Albie: “I am God’s child…” Albie’s response: (Warms up his singing voice with “Mee, mee, mee, mee, mee…” and sings in a silly dramatic opera-like voice) “I am God’s child—God has big plans for me.” Presenter says:

Welcome guests and thank them for attending.
