Kingdom Quest Year 2 - Lesson 17 - 2

Pre-Session Singing:

(10 minutes)

Purpose: When all children are in one group singing, it is easy for new children to join the group and immediately get involved. When the music can be correlated, it introduces the theme for the day. Choose two to three songs and list them here.

Large Group Opening: (15 minutes) Purpose: The puppet demonstrates the need that will be met in today’s lesson. The scripts are not written verbatim, but give a story line in which the group leader can interact with the puppet. The children are introduced to the take home point and then interact with God’s Word, as they experience the Bible event.

Puppet Presentation: Judy enters carrying a paper doll that she made and is very proud of. Not only did she make it, but she also named it and she loves it very much. The presenter asks Judy what her doll’s name is, and she replies Evie. The presenter acts surprised and then tells Judy that her paper doll reminds him of today’s Bible event. Today’s Bible event tells about when God made the first man, Adam, and the first woman, Eve. He made them very special and he loved them very much. Stress God’s excitement at Adam and Eve and his excitement about his children today, just as Judy was excited about her paper doll, Evie. The presenter teaches Judy the take home point. *GOD’S CREATION IS GRRREAT! God made me! The presenter says the first line; Judy responds with the second line. After practicing it a few times, the presenter teaches it to the children.

Bible Event: Mystery Box The Mystery Box contains objects that will help the presenter tell the Bible event in creative fashion. They can be lifted out and shown as the story is told. Another option is to have a hole cut in the top of the box so that a child could put a hand in and guess what the object is before it is shown.

Bring the Mystery Box and all of its contents on stage for the Bible event. Begin: Boys and girls, close your eyes and turn on your memory. We are remembering what we learned last week. Last week we learned that God created the whole world. He said, “Let there be light. Let there be dark. Let there be a sun, moon, stars, water, earth, plants, animals, and a sky.” And it was so. But God had not yet created one thing—he had not yet created people. Boys and girls, you can open your eyes now. Today, we are going to learn about when God made the first man and the first woman.

Kingdom Quest Year 2 - Lesson 17 - 3

Take the Bible out of the Mystery Box. It tells all about it here in my Bible. Do you know what is so exciting about this Bible event? It’s true! We get to learn the true story about how God created man and woman, Adam and Eve, and God created you and me, too! It was time for God to create the first man. He wanted this creation to be different than all the other things he created. Instead of saying, “Let there be man,” God took some dust of the earth. Take out the ball of clay. Then God formed and shaped that clay into the shape of a man. Roll clay in hand and shape and form it. It does not need to look like a man. When he was done, God blew his breath into the man. Blow on the clay. And the man came alive. Take out male doll or felt male figure. God put the man, Adam, into a beautiful garden. Take out plants and set male figure among plants. Then God said, “It is not good for man to be alone. I will make for him a helper.” Take out plastic or felt animals. God showed Adam all the animals of the garden and Adam named them. Name the plastic or felt animals. But none of the animals was suitable to be Adam’s helper. So, God put Adam into a deep sleep. Lay male figure down. And God took from Adam a rib. Point to where your rib is. From Adam’s rib, God made a woman, Eve. Take out female figure.) When Adam woke up and saw Eve, he was very happy. And God looked down and said, “It is very good.” God not only made Adam and Eve, he also made you and me. He made us and he loves us. We are special. Sadly, God’s creation did not stay perfect. Next week, we will learn how Adam and Eve disobeyed God and brought sin and evil into the world. Now we are all sinners. We all choose to do things that are wrong. I have some good news for you! God loved us so much, that he had a plan to take away our sin. God sent his Son, Jesus, into the world to live and die for us so that we can be forgiven. Jesus takes away our sins. When we love Jesus and ask him to forgive us, Jesus makes us a new creation—free from sin. We still do things wrong but we are forgiven. Now we are doubly special to God. We are special because he made us. And we are special because Jesus made us new and forgiven!

Kingdom Quest Year 2 - Lesson 17 - 4

Practice the take home point with the children. *GOD’S CREATION IS GRRREAT! God made me! End with the following prayer. Have the children repeat each line. Dear God, (repeat) Thank you for making me. (repeat) I know I am special. (repeat) You love me very much. (repeat) And so you sent Jesus. (repeat) Thank you for his forgiveness. (repeat) Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! (repeat) Amen (repeat)

Kingdom Quest Year 2 - Lesson 17 - 5

Small Group Application: (30 minutes) Purpose: Smaller groups enable children to develop closer relationships with adults and peers in the church. As you reinforce the take home point with a fun hands-on activity, discuss the Bible event. Be sure to repeat the take home point several times. Say the first part and have the children respond with the second phrase. Application questions help kids apply the take home point to their daily lives. Close this session by gathering your small group for prayer. Let the kids pray!

During the small group application time, discuss the following questions and points: How did God create Adam and Eve? (He made Adam out of dust and by breathing life into him. He made Eve from Adam’s rib.) God made us too. In what ways are you special? (Answers will vary but may include what the children look like and what they can do. Emphasize that they are extra special because they God made them exactly as they should be for a purpose.) What happened to make God’s new world less than perfect? (Adam and Eve sinned.) How are we again made new and free from sin? (Through Jesus, who died for us on the cross so we can be forgiven.)

Activity 1: “God Made Me Puppet” Craft Copy puppet people Appendix on cardstock. You may want to cut the sheets in half before class. Each child receives one figure. To make: 1. Look in the mirror. What do you look like? Is your hair straight or curly, long or short? What color hair do you have? Eyes? Skin? What are you wearing? 2. Color the picture of the child to look like yourself. 3. Cut out the picture. (Option: Children who have trouble cutting might just cut a circle around the picture or get help from the shepherd.) 4. Tape the picture to the craft stick. You now have a puppet as a reminder that God made you! 5. Attach the label to the back of the puppet. To discuss: 1. How many ways can you make your puppet move? What are some special things God made you to do? 2. In what ways has God made you special? 3. How has Jesus made you a new person? Practice the take home point. *GOD’S CREATION IS GRRREAT! God made me!

Kingdom Quest Year 2 - Lesson 17 - 6

Activity 2: “Marshmallow and Pretzel Person” Snack To make: 1. The large marshmallow will be the body of the person. The small marshmallow will be the head. Attach the two parts together by sticking the pretzel into the top of the large marshmallow and the bottom of the small marshmallow. 2. To make the arms, stick one pretzel into each side of the large marshmallow. 3. Stick the last two pretzels into the bottom of the large marshmallow to make the legs. 4. Eat! HEALTHY SNACK OPTION: Use raisins, carrots, grape stems, and any other Godgiven snack that would help the children make their face on a napkin using the food as eyes, hair, etc. To discuss: 1. How did you make your marshmallow and pretzel person? How did God make Adam? Eve? 2. God also made you. How did God make you special? 3. What happened because of sin? How did Jesus make us new? Practice the take home point. *GOD’S CREATION IS GRRREAT! God made me!

Activity 3: “Created to Move” Game Play a game just like “Simon Says” with one difference. Instead of saying “Simon says…” say, “God made me to…” Some actions you might have the children do:  Jump up an down  Turn in a circle  Clap their hands  Run in place  Wave their hands  Stand on tiptoe

     

Wiggle their bottoms March in place Do jumping jacks Clap their legs Do deep knee bends Blow into the air

Occasionally leave off the words, “God made me to.” If a child does the actions when those words do not precede it, he must sit down until another child goes out or until you have played several rounds. To discuss: 1. What other special things can you do? 2. God has made our bodies to be able to do many, many things. What a wonderful God he is! Practice the take home point. *GOD’S CREATION IS GRRREAT! God made me!

Kingdom Quest Year 2 - Lesson 17 - 7

Prayer Time: Have the children thank God for making special body parts such as blue eyes, fast legs, curly hair, musical voice, etc. Thank Jesus for making them new through forgiveness.

Kingdom Quest Year 2 - Lesson 17 - 8

Large Group Wrap-Up: (10 minutes) Purpose: The crazy bird puppet, Albie, struggles with learning the take home point. The leader shows an example of the each small group application activity from this lesson and says the first phrase of the take home point. The kids respond with their phrase. They try to teach the puppet the take home point, but each time he confuses words or concepts. After three attempts, he finally gets it right and sings the correct take home point in a silly opera-like voice.

Singing:

(Optional)

Lesson Review with Puppet Skit: Presenter shows Albie a craft made in Activity 1. Then the kids attempt to teach Albie the take home point. Presenter says to kids: Kids say: Presenter says to Albie: Albie says:

“God’s creation is GRRREAT!…” “…God made me!” “God’s creation is GRRREAT!…” “Hey, that puppet looks like you!”

Presenter shows an example of the next activity done in small group and repeats first phrase to kids. The kids say the correct response trying to teach Albie the take home point. Continue in this manner with the presenter showing example of each activity. Here are Albie’s responses: Albie’s response to Activity 2 sample: “Don’t stick marshmallows in your nose.” Albie’s response to Activity 3 sample: “Hey, you sound like the guy from the Frosted Flakes box.” “Albie, listen one last time. God’s creation is GRRREAT!…” Kids response: “…God made me!” Presenter says to Albie: “God’s creation is GRRREAT!…” Albie’s response: (Warms up his singing voice with “Mee, mee, mee, mee, mee…” and sings in a silly dramatic opera-like voice) “GOD’S CREATION IS GRRREAT! GOD MADE ME!” Presenter says:

Welcome guests and thank them for attending.
