The Right Ingredients An award-winning kitchen blends architectural details with family-friendly function THE KITCHEN WAS INCONSISTENT with the colonial-style architecture of a century-old colonial-style home in Summit, so the owners sought advice from Heidi Piron, a certified kitchen designer, member of the National Kitchen and Bath Association and owner of Heidi Piron Design & Cabinetry LLC in Summit.

Piron added stronger architectural elements in the kitchen, including an X pattern that unites and updates the classic appearance of white and dark surfaces. Pendant lights over the island introduce the X pattern, which is repeated in counter stools and again on the front of cubbies on both sides of the window.

Opposite: The classic look of the kitchen includes unexpected touches that range from X-pattern design elements to a backsplash of mini subway tiles and cubbies with the inside stained a chocolate-walnut shade to showcase the white pottery they hold. The large island easily accommodates the sixmember family.

HUTCH PANTRY

Above: Designer Heidi Piron designed a cherry hutch in a rubbed butter tone with a navy finish for a distressed appearance because the wife wanted to incorporate cabinetry that stands out from the main work area. The hutch, with chicken-wire doors at center top, stores dry goods and linens. Beside the hutch is the doorway to the pantry.

Opposite: The pantry, which Piron redesigned after taking about a foot from the original space to allow room for the large island, features walnut-chocolate cabinetry and persimmoncolored walls. The mirrored backsplash adds an open feel, a corner sink saves space and appliances (Sub-Zero wine refrigerator, refrigerator drawers and pullout trash bin) hide behind wood panels to avoid the bulky look of appliance doors. The countertop is handhammered soapstone. Left: Across from the hutch, Piron designed office space with the same warm-white cabinetry chosen for the kitchen. The walnut top is stained with marine oil for durability. Included are a drawer for a printer and plenty of storage for paperwork and supplies. The passthrough above the desk overlooks the family room with French doors that lead to a patio, pool and barbecue.

Other strong architectural statements — including warm white cabinetry with 1-inch-thick doors and distinctive moldings — complement the rest of the home. “I wanted to give the homeowners and their children the beautiful kitchen they wanted to allow them to function as a family and entertain and still keep the integrity of the bold, pronounced profiles of architecture that run throughout the home,” Piron says. The kitchen won a second place NKBA design award. “Space planning and material choices are key to having any space complement other parts of the home,” Piron adds. In addition to the kid-friendly

island with a Calacutta marble top, she designed a separate dining area that sits behind the island, a hutch for dry storage and linens, a home office area that overlooks the family room and a butler’s pantry in a room adjacent to the kitchen.
