Official Newsletter of the Residents of Laurel Creek

LAUREL CREEK

Volume 3, Issue 3

Painting Spring is here. Many residents have plans to paint and/or power wash their houses. Please remember that even if you are painting your house a different color, an ACC application is required. To expedite approval, please be specific by stating the brand of paint, color name and number on the application. Please do not list a generic description such as “white” or “green” because not all shades of “white” or “green” meet ACC guidelines. Failing to provide the specifications will result in a delay processing the application. If you are having your house professionally painted, make sure that all rotted wood is replaced. Also, consider requesting that they re-caulk all of the windows to increase energy efficiency.

TRASH

The HOA has recently been making an effort to improve the overall appearance of Laurel Creek by trimming trees, repairing sidewalks, etc. The Board would like to express its appreciation to the vast majority of residents that follow the rules relative to trash. However, each week there are always a few residents who put out trash days too early or store their trash cans in an area visible from the street, both of which decrease the overall attractiveness of Laurel Creek. Our trash is currently picked up on Wednesday and Saturday. Recycling is picked up on Saturday only. Trash should not be placed on the curb before Tuesday evening for Wednesday trash service and Friday evening for Saturday service. Trash cans and recycling bins should be removed from the curb the same day as trash pick-up and stored out of sight, either in your garage or back-yard. See, Article 9, Section 15 of Architectural Guidelines.

Join the Rolling Fork Swim Team! Although our days are still chilly, we are already making plans for the 2016 swim team season! The Gator swim team is open to any neighborhood that does not have their ow n s w i m t e a m and that includes Woodwind Lakes! For over 15 years, many Woodwind Lakes residents have joined the Gators for the easy commute (just a bike ride down the street) and the benefit of smaller numbers where everybody “knows your name.” The mission of our team is to provide our local neighborhood children with a recreational team that endorses swimming as a safe, fun, and healthy way to spend time in the summer while learning good sportsmanship, proper swimming technique and fostering community spirit. We are a small team with a big heart. Online registration opens on March 1st at www.RFGators.com with practices beginning April 18. We welcome new swimmers and their families. To join the Gators, a swimmer must exhibit a willingness to work with the coaches and be able to follow instruction. They need to feel comfortable in the pool including putting face in water, blowing bubbles, and can keep head above water without assistance. To remain on the team, a swimmer must be able to swim the length of the pool by time trials in May (this can be done by using lane ropes, if necessary). We have swimmers as young as 4 years of age -18 compete. The Gators offer a trial period with a registration refund so there is no reason not to give us a try! To kick-off our season, the Gators will be offering a FREE “Spring Fling” with an egg hunt, games, bunny photos, raffles, and fun (snow cones will be for sale, too!) on Sunday, March 6 from 4pm-5pm at the Windfern MUD Building (Mauna Loa at Gessner). All parents/ children in the community are invited to attend. Team representatives will be there to answer questions and on-site registration kiosks will be available. Don’t forget to bring your baskets! Last but not least, if you are or know of a business that wants to support our non-profit organization, aimed at keeping kids busy, active, and supervised, please contact Kim Flaviani at kimflav@ yahoo.com. We try to keep the registration fees low so all families can participate and we survive on the donations of generous sponsors. For more information about our schedule, see our parent expectations, or our sponsor links go to our website at www.RFGators.com.

Zika Virus

Zika virus is transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes and there is no specific treatment or vaccine currently available. The best way to avoid getting the virus is to avoid being bitten by infected mosquitoes. About 20% of people with Zika virus actually get ill. Severe disease, requiring hospitalization, is uncommon and death due to the virus is rare. The incubation period of Zika virus is thought to be a few days to a week, but is still unknown. Symptoms include fever, skin rash, conjunctivitis, muscle and joint pain, and headache. Symptoms tend to be mild and last from 2-7 days. Zika virus can be contracted through the bite of an infected mosquito, through blood transfusions, through sexual contact, and from mother to child during pregnancy. The mosquitoes that are able to transmit Zika virus are also able to transmit dengue and Chikungunya viruses. These mosquitoes are daytime biters, but can also bite at night. Aedes mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water- buckets, tires, tree holes, animal water dishes, etc. To protect yourself from mosquito bites, wear lightcolored clothing that covers as much skin as possible, use insect repellent (read and follow label instructions), use screening on doors and windows, use mosquito netting (if needed) while sleeping, and reduce standing water areas. For more information on Zika virus, please see the CDC website here http://www.cdc.gov/zika/index.html For more information or help with identification, contact Wizzie Brown, Texas AgriLife Extension Service Program Specialist at 512.854.9600.
