Neighborhood Association October 2008 • Volume 1, Issue iv

Hello Neighbors, I was recently looking at the previous issue of the LONA newsletter and was pleasantly surprised to notice not only the increase in LONA authorship, but also an increase in local business advertisers. Great job everyone. We are well on our way to creating a great resource for all our neighbors. If you do have any questions or comments, you can always send an email to the LONA board at [email protected]. We all know that Texas is special, but now we have our own date for National Night Out. That’s right, NNO will be held during October 7th. Get out there and meet your neighbors, it builds the community and actually helps reduce crime. A couple our street groups will be hosting their NNO celebrations at Oak View Park. Please see the notice further on in the newsletter for more information. For those of you on the LONA Yahoo Group, you have seen a number of emails concerned about people driving poorly when kids are going to and coming from school. Please be aware that kids do not always make the safe decision when crossing roads and be extra vigilant. Also, at the end of the month there will be a significant increase in little ghouls, goblins, spider men, Jedi knights, pirates, fairies and princesses in the neighborhood. Please watch out for them and drive safe. And please help me with the dental bills and only pass out healthy, nutritious items…..RIGHT.  Have a great October and a Happy Halloween! Richard Thomas LONA President

Neighborhood Watch Program

Recently there have been numerous reports of auto and home break-ins in the neighborhood. As a result, there has been interest in implementing our own Neighborhood Watch Program. Neighborhood Watch Programs are one of the oldest and most effective crime prevention programs in the country, bringing citizens together with law enforcement to deter crime and make communities safer. Many Austin neighborhoods have already employed these types of programs. As a group, we have the power, the strength and safety in numbers. Let’s work together to find ways to deter crime in our own neighborhood. The first meeting was held on September 20, 2008 at 10:00 am. The purpose of this first meeting was to identify what it takes to initiate a Neighborhood Watch Program; a start-up plan of action. At this introduction meeting, we developed policies and procedures, assigned tasks, and initiated our first steps. Please join your neighbors for the second meeting. Check your LONA Calendar for next date, time and place. Or contact Lori Bertenthal, 512-658-3179, [email protected] for more details and information.

Have a Safe And Happy Halloween

Residential Burglaries

We have recently seen an influx of residential burglaries this month. The Austin Police Department is committed to apprehending the suspects in these cases, and would appreciate the citizens of Austin to report any unusual or suspicious activity. Examples of unusual or suspicious activity are: • Someone waiting or loitering in front of a house or business (especially if the business is closed or the homeowners are away.) • Someone loading property into a vehicle at an unusual place or hour. (This could be a burglary in progress.) • Vehicles repeatedly driving slowly through the neighborhood with no apparent destination or with the headlights turned off. • Persons loitering around cars or going car-to-car looking into them.   Remember to keep your garage doors locked, sliding glass doors secured, your windows locked at any level in your home, and turn on outside lights. Laurel Oaks SSudoku udoku The challenge is to fill every row across, every column down, and every 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9. Each 1 through 9 digit must appear only once in each row across, each column down, and each 3x3 box.

Some tips for the little ghouls and goblins for a fun night: 1. Always look both ways when crossing the street! 2. Carry a flashlight and walk with a group of friends/family. 3. Have an adult check all candy/goodies before eating anything. 4. Only go up to homes with their front porch light on. 5. Report any suspicious activity to an adult. Follow these simple tips, along with your parents/ gaurdians rules, and you'll be sure to have a great time on this frightful night! *Solution at www.PEELinc.com
