In a sports utility vehicle in this price range — and that can be easily defined as expensive — you really get what you want. For most people considering the 2016 Range Rover Supercharged Autobiography, it isn’t about impressing the next-door neighbors, as they can probably afford one as well. It’s about having a vehicle that gives you exactly the capability that you want without sacrificing much of anything. That capability includes climbing mountains, traversing deserts, slipping your way safely down muddy trails and even heading to the opera with exactly the comfort and features you expect. That means while the wolves may be howling outside, you are comfortably enclosed in sumptuous leather, metal, wood, with full connectivity, plenty of entertainment as well as all the information you want about what is happening under your wheels. The center console is broad and the wood veneers and the sliding shutter covering the cup holders are handmade. The center console is sleek, with half the number of switches there than on the previous generation. With three grades of leather used, there are very few surfaces in the Range Rover than aren’t covered with leather. In the Autobiography that I tested, this meant semi-aniline leather, carefully matched for consistency. The seats and wrapped surfaces show tailored twin-needle stitching. Metal details provide contrast to the warmth of the leather and veneer surfaces. Legroom in the standardwheelbase Range Rover rear seat extends to nearly 40-in. and

The 2016Range Rover Supercharged Autobiography. the long-wheelbase models have 7.3-in. more rear-seat legroom. There is also an “Individualized Rear Seating” package to up the luxury ante with a higher level of materials quality. All three sound systems are from the British audiophile brand, Meridian. The top-of-the-line system with 1,700 watts of power in a 3D Surround Sound system uses 29 speakers, including a subwoofer, to produce the best automotive sound system I’ve experienced. When you buy a Range Rover, you get to choose from many more options: 39 exterior paint colors, 22 of which are exclusive to the Autobiography trim level. There are 19 interior color themes, three interior veneers and even three headliner colors. Outside, you can pick from 11 available alloy wheel designs for 19-, 20-, 21- and 22-in. wheels, a full-size panoramic roof, power deployable side steps, and on the Autobiography, illuminated door sill plates are an option. As is traditional, when you are driving a Range Rover, you are sitting high and upright, so you have plenty of visibility. This
is now helped by the 360-degree camera that shows what’s happening all around the car until you hit 10 mph. This is not only great for driving in heavy-duty off-road environs, but makes getting out of tight parking spaces much less intimidating. For those who aren’t thrilled with the act of parking, Land Rover offers several assists for this and other driving situations on this Range Rover. The optional Enhanced Parking Aids include a parallel park feature. And also a parking exit function help automatically exit parallel parking spaces. Land Rovers’ Perpendicular Park can automatically center it in a parking spaces. There is also a Lane Departure Warning system, using a forward-looking camera looking at the lane markings. It will warn you by shaking the steering wheel if you move out of lane when the turn signal isn’t on. The same camera is used for the Traffic Sign Recognition system, which is designed to identify speed limit signs, among others. There are other assists to driving, such as an excellent
adaptive cruise control. The offroad capability is as good as any in the world. Mechanically the Range Rover demonstrates the same high standard of capability as it does luxury. The Supercharged Autobiography most represents that concept, as the Supercharged refers to the level of power and capability while the Autobiography moniker sets the level of luxury. This starts with the 5.0-liter V8 supercharged engine. It generates 510-hp .and 461 lb.-ft. of peak torque. In spite of its size, Land Rover officials claim a 0-60 mph time of 5.1 sec. At the same time the EPA mileage rating is 14 mpg city, 19 mpg on the highway. The power goes through a zF eight-speed automatic transmission. I found the gear ratios to be well set and shifts were quite fast. This transmission is used in almost all of the high-luxury sedans, especially the European models. There are paddle shifters on the steering wheel, which are fun to use. Keep in mind that in spite of its six-figure price tag, a high percentage of Range Rover owners do take them off-road.
The full-time four-wheel drive system in the Range Rover is a two-speed transfer case providing a 50:50 torque split, and a selectable low-range for off-road crawling. There is also an optional active rear locking differential on the V8 Supercharged models. In addition to its off-road and luxury capabilities, the Range Rover Supercharged also has a 7,716-lb. towing capability. Even the suspension is mostly aluminum, using a wide-spaced double-wishbone design in front and a multi-link layout at the rear. The suspension allows 10.2-in. of wheel travel at the front and 12.2-in. in back. This is plenty of wheel articulation for serious rock climbing. I’ve driven the Range Rover up and down hills I couldn’t do on foot. This is the third year of this all-aluminum newest generation of the Range Rover. It is the top of the brand’s food chain, and is attractive, slightly understated and perfectly comfortable in town or country. The optional coolers, which can be ordered between both the front and rear seats, are equally capable of holding champagne or beer. That isn’t something you can say about most vehicles whose starting prices run from $83,495 for the V6 model to $200,995 for the Range Rover Autobiography Black LWB with Valloire White Paint. Based on that, the Supercharged Autobiography I drove was a steal at $122,000. Okay, that’s a stretch, but if you can afford it, the Range Rover is certainly worth the money. Affordable Escape in sync with what really matters on the road meaning without sacrific-

or utility money — a new car with a current average price of $33,566. And that is a generous assessment, assuming the buyers are living
in relatively high-income places such as the Washington area. If you’re in Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi — you get the idea — you might have to budget carefully even to buy, if you can find one, a new
car with a final transaction price of $17,000. I’m not talking about cash purchases, either. Nor am I referring to traditional 36-month finance plans. Nowadays, you are likely to carry a note on

a new vehicle as long as seven years. For all those reasons, I have decided to concentrate on reasonably affordable wheels in this space. Don’t get me wrong. I like expensive luxury cars, as do, apparently, many of my colleagues in this journalistic pursuit, who spend much of their time and energy chasing high-cost, high-horsepower automobiles. Heck, it is fun — but not fun many visitors to this space can afford. What they can buy and smile about, I think, is a model such as the compact, all-wheel-drive 2016 Ford Escape Titanium crossover-utility vehicle equipped with an optional turbocharged (forced air), 2-liter inline four-cylinder gasoline engine (240 horsepower, 270 poundfeet of torque). Buyers shopping the Escape line for a better deal can find one by selecting a front-wheel-drive model in S or SE trim or choosing one with a smaller engine — a gasoline turbo 1.6-liter four-cylinder (178 horsepower, 184 pound-feet of torque), or a normally aspirated gasoline 2.5-liter four-cylinder (168 horsepower, 170 pound-feet of torque). I’d buy the 2-liter, turbo four, all-wheel-drive model only if I were in a driving environment where I could enjoy it — rural, long commutes, relatively uncongested highways, that sort of thing. Otherwise, it makes more sense to get one of the smaller engines, especially in heavily congested urban areas. Ah, but Warren, what about “fun” and “the joy of driving”? Hmm. One of the benefits of getting older is that you’re far less willing to lie to yourself. I drive 40,000 miles annually worldwide. All you need is to be stuck in a traffic jam in Sao Paulo, Brazil, or in a tie-up on California’s Pacific Coast Highway to be cured of the “joy of driving” silliness. Does that mean the fun factor is gone? Not at all. But I now check my bank account very carefully before I go zooming about somebody’s back road in a piece of expensive, highhorsepower metal. There is nothing more humbling than being ordered to appear before a local magistrate in a small town whose speed ordinances you have offended. Besides, you can have great fun in the turbo 2-liter Ford Escape Titanium. The little crossover-utility model, neatly styled inside and out for 2016, has character. It also is smart — literally, thanks to Ford’s welcome upgrade of its onboard intelligence system, “Sync 3,” a new touchscreen-enabled system that is far easier to use than the MyFord Touch system it replaces. Ford, like most of its rivals, is investing heavily in mobile connectivity — steadily moving toward the day, as impossible as it might seem, when cars will drive us more than we will drive them. The new Escape Titanium is well endowed in that regard, assuming you are willing to pay for many of its technological extras. Put it this way: The base, front-wheel-drive Escape S starts at $23,590. The 2016 Escape Titanium with all-wheel drive, recommended by this column, has a starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $31, 745. I write 52 columns a year for this beloved journal — too few, I think, to devote more than a couple to models so expensive they can be comfortably afforded by only 1 percent of the U.S. population.

Pipe didn’t rust from not filling up Dear Car Talk: A nickel bet rides on this. I almost always just put $20 worth of gas in my 2012 Mazda 5’s gas tank. My husband firmly believes that my previous car’s fill pipe rusted out because I did not fill up the gas tank all the way every time. He dogs me Ray endlessly about Magliozzi rusting out the fill Car Talk pipe in this vehicle by not filling up the gas tank. Does it matter, and am I in danger of rusting out the fill pipe to the gas tank by not filling up the tank? — Jan P.S. I have run out of gas only once (a long time ago) in our 25 years of marriage. Well, you can start dreaming about where you’re going to spend that nickel, Jan. Your husband is a complete dodo. The gasoline filler pipe, or filler neck, is the pipe that runs from the gas tank to the opening where you stick the fuel nozzle when you fill up. Every filler neck we’ve ever seen that has rusted has rusted from the outside, not the inside. So for that reason alone, how far you fill up the tank is irrelevant. And second, even if you were to fill the tank right up to the gas cap, it would stay that full for only two blocks! Then you’d use some gas, and the filler neck would empty out again. All-wheel drive is only the introduction to its benefits By Mike Covello AutoWritersInk
When Subaru went all all-wheel-drive in 1997, some industry wags said they were foolish. Granted, there are parts of the country where the advantages of having all four wheels driven are outweighed by the disadvantages of the necessary extra weight. Yes, they now offer the blast-to-drive BRZ 2+2 only in rear wheel drive, but the rest of the Subaru lineup is designed to get you to your destination, regardless of the weather. I will admit my prejudice in favor of Subarus. I have purchased eight of them for myself and my family. To be totally honest, I purchased a blue 2015 Impreza Sport Limited five-door similar to my Ice Silver Metallic Impreza 2016 tester to replace my wife’s 2008 Impreza. So the latest tester looked quite at home in my garage and required no acclimation to the controls. Why get a Subaru? Let’s see if I can give you a peek into our preoccupation with these cars. The number one thing is winter traction. Yes, there are other cars that send power to all four wheels. And many manufacturers are also using a continuously variable transmission in search of great fuel efficiency. The Impreza is now rated at 28 mpg in city driving and 37mpg highway. That is not hybrid or diesel territory, but Subaru claims that 37 mpg is the

The Subaru Impreza highest score for any AWD vehicle sold in the U.S. I found it relatively easy to get mid-thirties on my latest highway journey. For my wife, the Impreza size is just right. The fold-down rear seat allows you to accommodate moderate levels of cargo. While there are seatbelts for five, it really fits four much more comfortably. But for her, the ease of parking and, dare-I-call-it, nimbleness are what she likes about it. But what she loves about it is the new Subaru connectivity package known as Star-link. Starting with hands-free Blue-
tooth phone connection and moving up to the more deluxe features, she’s hooked. Have you ever forgotten where you parked? Well, Subaru Star-link subscribers can use remote lock/unlock, remote horns and lights and remote vehicle locater. The highest tech feature that my tester had is Subaru Eye-Sight. Instead of using laser or radar, Subaru mounts cameras on either side of the inside rear view mirror. This gives the car a binocular visual feed to the computer, which enables a number of cool features. The Adaptive Cruise
control worked excellently. One difference was that if you stopped at the end of an Interstate exit ramp, and weren’t paying
close attention, the Subaru would let you know when the car in front of you moved forward. My Impreza would not lunge
out into the intersection, thinking you should follow the other car. Instead a gentle chime sounded and a message appeared on the Eye Sight panel saying, “The car in front of you has moved.” Lane and Departure Sway Warning announces when you drift out of your lane. The Pre-Collision System will not only apply full braking if it senses an impending crash, it also has a Throttle Management component that will cut back the fuel in order to make the braking more effective. Prices start at $18,295 for the Impreza five-door 2.0i and go up to $23,595 for the top of the line Sport Limited. Subaru lumps the Eye-Sight driver assist package with the power moonroof and navigation infotainment system for a price tag of $2,795. Total on my tester with the $795 destination and handling fee was $26,885. Subarus are the most reliable brand of cars I have ever owned. I do not have much positive to say about the current Impreza style, other than the fog light surrounds look sharp on the sport edition with that single bar of chrome accenting each front corner. But, if you value practicality, reliability and getyou-there-despite-theweather prowess, check out the latest Impreza from Subaru.
