A Safe Place to Share My Story I met Brian Mariska in 2010 and we were married in 2011. Both of us had been single for about eight years and felt blessed by God to have found each other. Brian had Multiple Sclerosis, which had been under control for 30-plus years. In March of 2017, Brian had surgery from which he never fully recovered and in June of 2017, Brian lost his hard-fought fight with MS. Needless to say, I was totally devastated. For seven years, Brian and I had done so much together. How was I going to survive without him? Thanks to the Grief Group at Southwood Lutheran, I found solace and was able to “push through” my loss. It was very difficult to walk into that first meeting. I knew this was not going to bring Brian back, so, what was the purpose of sharing my sorrow? To my surprise, Grief Group was a very safe place to share my story. I found that the more I shared my feelings of anger and loneliness, the better I felt. Journaling my feelings and writing letters to Brian expressing my love for him all made a difference. Going to Grief Group started me on the path to not forget, but to work through the hurt and the sorrow. I had to force myself to attend that first meeting, but the results are so healing and comforting. I would encourage anyone who has experienced the loss of a loved one to attend these meetings. Let the healing begin!
