Uncharted Lesson 2 April 14/15 2

Uncharted Series at a Glance for Elevate (continued) Lesson 1: Evangelism Jesus gave his followers a mission: to tell others the story of what he did. Jesus died and came back to life to show his love for every person on earth, and he wants everyone to know about it. When we tell someone about Jesus, we’re helping fulfill that amazing mission, and giving them the chance to follow God! Like Peter, we can tell others about Jesus, simply by sharing the story of how he changed our lives! Our stories can show others who Jesus is. Lesson 2: Giving When we think of giving, we usually think of money. Even if we have no money, however, we still have a lot to give. Peter and John didn’t have a cent to give when a man who couldn’t walk asked them for money, but they ended up giving him something much more valuable. Just like Peter, you have something incredible to give, something that can have a huge impact on someone else. Lesson 3: Prayer Do our prayers make a difference? The people in the first church weren’t sure all the time either. In fact, when God miraculously answered one of their prayers, they didn’t believe it at first! Prayer helped Peter out of a dangerous place, and still makes a difference today, because every one of your prayers matters to God. Lesson 4: Community Whether you’ve been following Jesus for years or just started this week, God has a huge adventure in store for you. Like any journey, the people you follow make a big difference. After Saul met Jesus in an incredible way, the first place God sent him was to a mentor, someone who could help him follow God. The people we choose to guide us can lead us further from God or closer to him. Like Saul, we need to choose our community well. Lesson 5: Service and Hospitality Lydia followed Jesus, but she wasn’t a pastor, a worship leader, or a teacher. She was a businesswoman who used her gifts and abilities to serve others and do great things for God in a way you may not expect. This week we’ll find out how her hospitality made a difference then, and how welcoming others can have a huge impact today. Lesson 6: Knowing God John Mark (known just as Mark) is only mentioned a couple times in the Bible, but his story is a big part of it. His first trip with Paul was a disaster, so much so that Paul refused to accept Mark's help later on. Mark would go on, however, to be one of the first people to write down the full story of Jesus, and have a great relationship with Paul. Join us this week to find out how knowing God changed Mark's life, and can still change ours today! Uncharted Lesson 2 April 14/15 3

Welcome

1:00

Welcome to Elevate, everyone! Who thinks they gave the most high-fives? Nice job! My name is ______, and I’m pumped to be here! We get to talk about something super important today, actually, it’s a way you can change this world, and make it better. We’ll find out what it is in a bit, but we also have some games, music, and great stories coming up. In case you haven’t noticed, we have some flags around the room. The grade you’re in is your team, and your flag is your team’s color! That’s important to know, because you’ll be completing challenges together.

Question of the Day

2:00

Look for a teammate sitting near you, because I want you to find out their answer to our question of the day! Question of the Day Video

(Auto Advance) QOTD Slide: What’s one thing you would like to grow on trees (besides money)?

What’s one thing you would like to grow on trees? Go ahead and talk about your answer with someone on your team! Uncharted Lesson 2 April 14/15 5

Do This: Emcee as the kids are sharing their answers. Encourage them to share with the people around them, and encourage any kid whose story you hear. Know This: Allow kids time to interact with one another. Feel free to ask a few of them what their answer is, but you don’t have to have them share with the whole group.

If everything we wanted grew on trees, that might be incredible, but it’s hard to imagine something like a pizza tree, or a video game tree, isn’t it? It’s fun to get things that we want and need, but it can feel even better to give someone else something they want or need. To see how that works, let’s go to our group activity!

Group Activity

10:00

Game Title Slide: “Bottle Snatchers”

This game is called “Bottle Snatchers.” Your group leader has a bottle, and is going to tape a circle on the ground. Here’s how the game works. One of you will be the bottle guard. Your job is to guard the bottle in the circle, while everyone else in your group, the bottle snatchers, try to take it. The hard part is, the guard must always be touching the circle with at least one of your feet. You can’t step off of it at all. If you tag one of the bottle snatchers, they have to sit down, right where they are. Whenever someone gets the bottle, they switch places with the bottle guard, and everyone can stand up again. If the guard tags everyone before someone gets the bottle, they win! Do This: If possible, it may help to demonstrate this with another volunteer. Know This: Make sure the tape circles are set up ahead of time, and the volunteers know where they are going. Circles should be about 3 feet in diameter, though you could go slightly larger for groups of older kids, and slightly smaller for younger kids.

Now, you can go to your group flags and your leaders will get the game started! Fun Game Music! Know This: You may end the game when kids seem to be getting tired, even if it is ahead of schedule. Worship Slide and clear audio

Uncharted Lesson 2 April 14/15 6

Great job! That was a challenge! Who thinks they spent the most time as the bottle guard? That game can teach us something. If we focus too much on trying to keep all the things we have, we’ll lose them eventually. There’s a better way, though, and that’s what we’re going to talk about today. When we choose to give, we can change the world in a great way.

Worship

5:00

Giving doesn’t always have to do with money, though being generous with our money is important. We can give our time when we volunteer, we can give our talents by serving others, and we can give love to others and to God! When we show God that we love him, we call that worship. Singing is a great way to use our time to worship God! Let’s stand and sing “Shout it from the Mountains!” We sang this song for the first time last week, so we’ll keep learning it together! Song 1: Shout it from the Mountains

(Auto advance) Worship Slide

God is so incredible, and he gives us so much! He gave us this world to live in, provides the things we need every day, and gives us more love than we can ever imagine. Let’s take a moment to talk to God, and tell him how much we love him by praying. God, thank you for all that you give to us. Help us to see ways we can be generous like you are. Thank you for loving us. In Jesus’ name, amen.

That’s really interesting. I think a lot of us have had something like that happen.

Lesson Intro

1:00

Life with God is an incredible adventure! The first followers of Jesus hiked across deserts, sailed oceans, and traveled around the world to tell people what Jesus had done for them! This series, “Uncharted,” is about how we can follow Jesus today. The things you do can change lives and help people learn about Jesus, just like his followers did thousands of years ago. How? That’s what you get to talk about in your groups. What can we do that will really make a difference? You’ve got fifteen minutes to talk about it and find some answers! Look for your leader by your group’s flag. I’ll see you after group time!

Group Time

15:00

(Optional) 15:00 Group Time Countdown Do This: Make sure each kid finds their group. Help group leaders if there is a need. Encourage kids as they work to answer the question. Know This: This is a time for kids to search for answers in the Bible, and see how they can use the Bible to investigate and better understand life. This time is designed for kids to interact and deepen their understanding. They won’t get all the answers, but allow them to question and discover as much as possible. Be ready to support group leaders in any way needed. Do This: Give the groups a warning about one minute before this time is up. When this time ends, transition into the memory verse challenge. Memory Verse Challenge

2:00

What you were just talking about is important, because every one of you can make a big difference in our world. You can help people learn about God’s love, and show them how amazing he is. That’s part of Jesus’ mission for us, too! Check out this verse, it’s one of the last things Jesus said to his followers before leaving earth. Do This: Read the verse from the screen.

The word “witnesses” means people who tell someone about something. So, when we tell others Jesus’ story, we are witnessing about him. This was Jesus’ mission for his followers, and it’s still his mission for us today. Let’s read the verse together, normally this first time, then we’ll change it up. Do This: Read the verse together.

Now, let’s read it with a southern accent! Do This: Read the verse together.

Now, let’s read it with a British accent! Do This: Read the verse together.

Alright, one more time, with an Australian accent! Do This: Read the verse together.

Great! You can all sit down.

Uncharted Lesson 2 April 14/15 9

(Auto advance) Series Title Slide: Uncharted

Giving is such a great way to make a difference. It can change someone else’s life, and when we give generously, our life changes, too.

Application

5:00

What Peter said in that story was really incredible. Let’s look at it again. Acts 3:6- Peter said “I don’t have any silver or gold. But I’ll give you what I have.” Do This: Read the verse from the screen.

Giving money is a great way to be generous, but like Peter just showed us, money isn’t the only thing we can give. There are ways we can change this world by giving to others every day. All we have to do is look for chances to be generous. There are two things you can use to help you make a big difference by giving every day. The first one is to use things you like to do. Give through the things you like to do.

All of us like to do different things, we are good at different things. Peter used his gift, his talent of healing to help the man who couldn’t walk. We can give to others by using our talents. Are you good at singing? Are you good at reading? Football? Tennis? Crafts? Video games? You can use that talent to help someone else, you just have to look for a way. Invite someone to play a sport with you. Volunteer to read or sing to an elderly person. You can even use your talents by volunteering here at church! If you are interested in that, we would love to help you become part of our volunteer team, just ask one of the adults in here about it! The second place you can look for ways to give is when something makes you sad. Give when something makes you sad.

Have you ever seen something bad happen to others? We hear about a lot of these things on the news, or in schools. Those things can seem big and scary, but you can Uncharted Lesson 2 April 14/15 10

help. You have the power to help people when bad things happen to them. If you see something that makes you sad, that usually means there is something you can do to help. If you see a kid being bullied, you can be a friend to them. If you see something sad or scary on the news, you can decide to help the people that were hurt by it. You can ask your family to volunteer and help others near where you live. You could sell lemonade or cookies and raise money to help others. You can do this! You don’t have to wait for someone else to do something, you can make a difference every day, by deciding to give. The next time you see something on the news or hear about something that makes you sad, think about how you could help someone who was affected by what happened. With God leading us and showing us ways to give, we can change this world.

Worship

It’s incredible that God gives us the chance to make such a big difference by giving to others. That’s the kind of person I want to be, someone who is known for being generous and loving others the way God loves me. There’s an awesome song we like to sing about that, called “Who I Wanna Be!” Let’s stand and sing it now! Song 2: Who I Wanna Be

Wrap-Up

1:00

We’re almost done, but I have one thing to show you first. Do This: Show kids the Family Connection Card.

This is our Family Connection Card. It can help you take what we learned today outside of this building, and start to use it to make an impact. It can help your parents learn about what we talked about today, and show them how awesome giving can be. Make sure you get one of these on your way out. Let’s finish up by talking to God. To help us stay focused on Him, let’s close our eyes and bow our heads while we pray. Uncharted Lesson 2 April 14/15 11

God, we love you. You are a great example of giving and being generous. Help us to give to others, just like you give to us every day. In Jesus’ name, amen. I’ve had so much fun hanging out with you all today, I hope to see you next week! Elevate Slide
