LESSON #4 PAUL’S SURPASSING GAIN Philippians 3:1-4:1 Subject: Paul’s gain of Christ outweighed his loss and determined his life’s goal. Please answer these lesson questions for next week prior to watching the Lesson 4 video.

Review 1. What new information did you gain from the lesson on Philippians 2?

2.

Was there anything in the lecture that helped you apply the passage to your life?

Read Philippians 3:1-3 Paul’s warning 3. Paul’s warning refers to the Judaizers, people who claimed to be Christians, yet insisted that a person could only become a Christian through following the Mosiac Law which included the rite of circumcision. How do people today make similar errors in theology?

4.

How does the attitude about which Paul warned conflict with the point he had been making that the believer is to rejoice in the Lord?

5.

What did Paul mean by his statement, “For it is we who are the circumcision”? (v. 3)

6.

Explain the three ways Paul gave by which the person who is the true circumcision is identified.

Read Philippians 3:4-11 Paul’s comparison of values 7. List each of the items on Paul’s previous profit list (vs. 4-6).

8.

Try to relate each reason for Paul’s former confidence (vs. 4-6) to things today people might count on before God.

9.

What did Paul discover was infinitely more valuable?

10. After Paul realized the worthlessness of what he once valued and the surpassing greatness he now possessed, what became his highest goal in life?

11. What exactly do you value most? Remember that what we give priority to in our lives reveals what really is most important to us.

Read Philippians 3:12-4:1 Paul’s call to press on 12. Paul’s formula for Christian growth consists of four aspects. From verses 12-14 state each one and explain what it means. a. A correct appraisal of himself b. A passionate zeal c. A clear cut goal d. A sure foundation 13. What was Paul’s confidence that those who are in Christ will “grow up” in Him?

14. Give and explain the ways Paul described those who would not live according to the pattern he had given.

15. On the other hand, how will those who are in Christ live?

Reflection and Personal Application 16. Take some time to determine your life goal. How is this goal reflected in the activities that consume your time and energy? Is there a change that you need to make with God’s help?
