II.

III.

LESSON #9 THE CHRISTIAN’S RELATIONSHIP TO THE LAW Subject: In Christ, the believer is freed from the law of sin and death.

Romans 7:1-25

Please answer these lesson questions for next week prior to watching the Lesson 9 video.

Review 1. Was there any way that the last lesson impacted your life over the past week?

Read Romans 7:1-6 Release from the law 2. What is the general principle concerning the law that Paul gives in verse 1? This principle is the basis for what he has been teaching in Romans 6 and where he is now going in Romans 7. Explain it from a legal standpoint.

3.

How does Paul then illustrate the principle? What is the example he uses?

4.

Can you explain how Paul applies the legal principle to theology in verses 4-7 as he gives the Christian’s relationship to the law?

5.

What logical conclusion might one make about the relationship of the Christian to the law at this point in Paul’s teaching? How would a person live if he made that conclusion?

Read Romans 7:7-13 Defense of the law 6. Give two objections (with verses) Paul anticipates his readers to make to his teaching about the law.

7.

How does he counter the objections he anticipates?

8.

Paul counters the objections by clarifying the relationship of the law and sin. What three effects (or purposes) does he bring out about the law and sin in verses 7-13? Put them in your own words to better understand them.

9.

How has the law had a positive effect in your life?

Read Romans 7:14-25 Limitations of the law 10. The person Paul is referring to by “I” in this passage has been a matter of great debate among Bible scholars. Who do you think are some possibilities?

11. What are the limitations Paul gives of the law? He has dealt with this matter in previous passages.

12. Can you remember a time that you have had the same struggle with the law of sin Paul describes? Would you be willing to share the experience with your group?

13. From your understanding of Romans so far, how does the person’s relationship to God’s law change after he has become a Christian? Can you share the time when you became aware of such a change in your own life?

14. Can you explain in your own words the two laws Paul speaks of that are at work in the believer?

Review and Personal Application 15. How has the study of this chapter helped you understand your relationship to God’s law?
