CLASSROOM RULES A large piece of poster paper is hanging in your classroom (one for 9:15 and one for 11:00) to write down your class rules. Renee will collect the papers and type of the class rules to hang in the classroom for next week. Have the children be involved in setting the rules for the class. As a class, brainstorm what rules the class feels is important. Questions to help the discussion: How do you want to be treated while in the classroom? How should you treat your classmates/friends? How should you treat teachers and helpers? How should you act while in the classroom or Large Group? What actions/behaviors should not be allowed so everyone can learn? What actions/behaviors should not be allowed so everyone stays safe? Bonus: What should be the consequences for breaking a rule? NOTE: Describe or demonstrate what the rules look like (correct actions/behavior). The rules should be very concrete for children. BACKPACK BLESSING (Approximately 9:35/11:20) Kelly/Renee will give you the signal as to when to line up the children to leave for the Sanctuary. BRING YOUR ROSTER AND HAVE A HEAD COUNT.  We will all go to the Sanctuary together for the blessing part of the worship service. (Children who do not want to go into the Sanctuary will wait outside in the narthex with a teacher).  After the blessing, we will all return to the Wesley Room for a short Large Group time.  DO A HEAD COUNT WHEN YOUR CLASS GETS TO THE WESLEY ROOM. You will receive a bag of backpack tags to put on the children’s backpacks. Children who did not bring their backpack may still have a tag. Distribute tags to children at pick up time so tags are not lost or left behind.

TO BE DONE AFTER RETURNING FROM LARGE GROUP FINISH CLASS RULES (if not complete) GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER GAMES (Teachers/SIMs/Buddies Play too). 1. Favorite Stick – GRADE 2 ONLY A bucket of sticks will be placed in your classroom. Have the children sit in a circle on the floor or in chairs. The children take turns picking a stick and reading the item on the end of the stick. The child shares his favorite of that item. If time, the child may also share why. 2. All About Me Have the children sit in a circle on the floor or in chairs. Give each child a small plastic cup. Place buttons out on the table/floor. Read the statements listed on the ALL ABOUT ME sheet out loud to the class. Everyone answers the question by placing a button in their cup if the answer is “YES”. If the answer is no, do not put a button in the cup. See statements attached. After all of the questions, have the Page 2

children count up how many buttons they have in their cup. This is just for fun – there is no winning number. 3. Things In Common Divide the class into teams of 2, 3, or 4 (depending upon the size of your class). The teacher rolls the dice. Each team talks to each other to find things they have in common. The team must come up with the number of things in common to match the number on the dice. For example: If the number rolled was 3, each team must think of 3 things they have in common. Each team shares their common traits to the class. After each team shares, rearrange the teams and roll the dice again. Do not allow the children to say “they are all in grade X or the same age” as a common trait. Suggestions are: Same number of siblings, Same school, Same eye color, Same birthday month , Same favorite sport, Same favorite food, Same toy, etc. (Note: Adjust as needed for the Kindergarten class). 4. Would You Rather Designate two separate areas or corners of the room for the children to walk to (or hop, jump, crawl). Have a 4:10ers stand with a sign at each area A and B. Have all the children stand in the middle of the room. Ask one of the questions and give the A and B choices. The children go to the area/corner of their choice. Call the children back to the middle of the room for the next question. See statements attached. 5. Free Time (until pick up time)  Continue playing games: I Spy, Hangman, Drawing Guessing Games  Coloring/Activity Sheets  Toys  Read Books  Talking/Visiting PICK UP TIME Be sure to check pick up tag codes carefully. Thank each child for coming and invite them to come back next week. 11:00 Volunteers: Return the Class Basket of supplies, stack chairs, tidy classroom.
