AUGUST 2014

Let Your Business Be Seen Buy Local Expo Sept. 17 at Diamond Mills It’s important for your business to see and be seen and what better way than at the Buy Local Expo, the Chamber’s largest networking event of the year? The Chamber’s 18th Buy Local Expo, which features about 100 exhibitors from local businesses, will be held from noon to 5 p.m. on Sept. 17 at the Diamond Mills Hotel & Tavern in Saugerties. Diamond Mills, on the waterfront in Saugerties, drew rave reviews last year as it hosted the Expo for the first time. “It’s a pleasure to host the Buy Local Expo for the second consecutive year and showcase the countless businesses that call Ulster County home,” said Tom Struzzieri, owner of Diamond Mills. “Offering the largest private event space in the region, Diamond Mills is the perfect fit for this event and it’s a tradition we hope to continue.” On the exhibit floor, business leaders mingle and share business cards, small gifts bearing their logos, candy and conversation. Michael Withall, sales manager at Coffee System of the Hudson Valley, said the Expo is perfect for his business because people can “taste and smell” his product. “It’s always great to get our product out there and have people taste it and drink it,” Withall said. “We get to see a lot of our existing customers there. We’ve been in business since 1970, so we have a lot of friends in Ulster County that we get to see and thank them for the business.”

Coffee System of the Hudson Valley, a Platinum Sponsor of the Expo, has been a Chamber member for 40 years in 2014. “We do the Expo because we want to support the Chamber and all the good it does,” Withall said. The Presenting Sponsor of the Expo is Naccarato Insurance in Saugerties, a company that recently marked 50 years in business. “We like being there to support the Chamber, to be visible to other businesses and to meet other businesspeople,” said owner Jack Naccarato. “The visibility, of course,

that’s what the Chamber is all about. We’re all there to support one another.” Mark Mulpeter, director of new business and commercial account services for Central Hudson, said sponsoring the Expo “is consistent with our efforts to promote economic development and business success in the Hudson Valley.” Central Hudson is a premier sponsor. “It’s a great opportunity for local businesses to showcase themselves, and for Chamber members to learn about the services and products offered by other members,” Mulpeter said.

The Chamber gave away awards to the Expo’s top exhibitors last year. Rondout Savings Bank won first place in the Best in Show category with the Daily Freeman second and Home Plate Deli third. Ivy Lodge Assisted Living was recognized for having the Most Friendly Staff; Ulster County Comptroller Elliott Auerbach won for Most Effective Demonstration; Excelsior Wood Products for Best New Exhibitor; Sickler, Torchia, Allen & Churchill CPAs for Most Creative Giveaways; and SUNY Ulster for Most Original Booth Design. This year’s Expo is open to the public free of charge. Parking is also free at Diamond Mills, located at 25 S. Partition St. in Saugerties. An exhibitor-only reception will follow the Expo from 5-7 p.m. The cost for a booth at the Expo is $350 for Chamber members and $450 for nonmembers. Sponsorships range from $575 to $2,500. To be a sponsor/exhibitor or to participate as an exhibitor, call the Ulster County Regional Chamber of Commerce office at (845) 338-5100 or www.UlsterChamber.org.

‘Gatehouse to the Catskills’ Olive Country Store Hosts Mixer Alex Stier has catered dozens and dozens of Chamber Mixers at various local businesses over the years, but this is the first time he will be delighting Chamber members with his best sample food recipes at his own location. In addition to owning the Home Plate Deli in the town of Ulster, Chamber members may not be aware that Alex also owns the Olive Country Store & Café on Rt. 28 in Shokan. Olive’s recently underwent some major renovations and Alex is inviting everyone to see the changes at the Chamber’s next Business-AfterHours mixer from 5-7 p.m. on Aug. 20. The sponsor is Rondout Savings Bank. Alex has proclaimed his business the “Gatehouse to the Catskills.” “Were not the interpretive center, which hopefully will be built next year, but we will be the first stop after people get off the Thruway and enter the Catskill Park,” said Stier. “We just went through the most extensive remodel that this location has seen since it was erected in the late 1990s,” Stier said. The project involved new commercial rest-

rooms and a gift shop. New signage and gas pumps for the Mobil gas station are on the way. Stier said many businesses along the Route 28 corridor close their restrooms to travelers because of sensitive septic systems. He wants to do just the opposite because he knows that can be a major issue for traveling families. “We want the business community to know we’re here not only for them, but if they have relatives who are spending the day or running up to the Ashokan Reservoir or the rail trail … we’re here,” Stier said. “It becomes very important for a traveling family to know that they can stop, use the restroom, and not feel like they have to buy something. We welcome people to come and browse.” If you’re heading up Route 28 to the Belleayre Ski Center or to leaf-peep in the Catskills in the fall, the Olive Country Store & Café is your one-stop destination. The business offers a little bit of everything, including fishing and hunting licenses, livesbait, camping supplies, automotive products, clothing, gifts and food and drinks. Stier said an automatic milkshake

machine was recently installed and has been a favorite with travelers. “If they want to buy some s’mores or an extra box of graham crackers or they need wood for their campfire or a fishing license, they can get it all here,” Stier said. “It truly is a Gatehouse to the Catskills. We want to be that stop before the people go off camping, before they go on their vacation up Route 28. “I’d also like the business community to recommend us to their customers, their family members and their friends who might be on Route 28.” Stier said the mixer would also feature a photography show by Abby Fisher called “A Reserved Beauty,” showcasing photos of the nearby Ashokan Reservoir. Fisher, who will Continued on page 9

Ulster Savings Nears Completion of $5.7 Million HQ Renovation   Ulster Savings Bank’s headquarters at 180 Schwenk Drive in Kingston has been undergoing a facelift of sorts and will be ready for hosting an upcoming Chamber mixer in November. “This renovation is transforming the building and includes improvements in workflow design that builds stronger efficiencies for serving our customers, our community, and our employees,” said Lisa Cathie, the bank’s president and CEO. Cathie said upon completion, the renovation will create a state-of-the-art conference center for training, meetings and hosting customer and community events; a new employee cafeteria; a coffee lounge; and a new full service ATM in an enhanced customer service area.  Ulster Savings Bank moved to the location in 1994 after taking it over from Met Life, which used the building as a call center. “It’s been 20 years since we’ve done much of a makeover on our main facility here, so this was well overdue,” said Jim Hochstatter, the bank’s chief operating officer.

New Chamber Foundation Launches Educate, Mentor, Connect and Empower The bad news is the U.S. workforce will be less educated in 2020 than it is today, according to a recent brief to the White House Summit. The good news, according to the same brief, is that “more than any other group, employers and leaders from the business community are uniquely positioned” to help. Enter the newly formed Ulster County Regional Chamber of Commerce Foundation. The Foundation will soon be its own non-profit and lists its mission as “business success through connections, empowerment, education and mentorship.” Officers of the Foundation’s board of directors are Francis Flynn, CPA, chairman; Christopher Marx, SUNY Ulster, vice chairman; John Eickman, HITS Endurance, treasurer; and Harris Safier, Westwood Metes & Bounds Realty as secretary. The board also includes Cheryl Bowers of Rondout Savings Bank, Kristin Bradley of the Ulster County Comptroller’s Office, Peter Carr of Marshall & Sterling Insurance, Nancy Clark PE of Erdman Anthony, Fran DePetrillo-Savoca of Ulster County Tourism, Eileen Larocca of Alcoa Fastening Systems, Johnny LeHane of WAKA Kickball & Social Sports, Anthony Marmo of Normann Staffing, Ulises Marmol of Ulster Savings Bank, Terry Parisian of the Hudson Valley Mall, Lorraine Salmon of Salmon Holdings, LLC, Sean Soliva of M&T Bank, and Chamber President Ward Todd. The Foundation has hired Ingrid Kulick as executive director. She was the founding executive director of the Kingston Hospital Foundation and the Saint Francis Health Care Foundation. Kulick comes to the Chamber with more than 35 years experience in management and as a volunteer and consultant. She has served on numerous boards, including

Foundation Board Chair Frank Flynn, Executive Director Ingrid Kulick and President Ward Todd president of the board of RUPCO. In partnership with the Chamber, Kulick said the Foundation has several goals to bolster the region’s capacity to compete and thrive: • Broaden and deepen business and community leadership capacity and participation. The Chamber’s popular Ulster Leadership Development Institute (ULDI) will now be under the direction of the Foundation. • Create a dynamic, interactive hub for Chamber members to meet, mentor and develop future leaders and professionals who work and volunteer within our region. • Build lasting partnerships with regional institutions, agencies and organizations that offer critical workforce and professional development programs to foster awareness, access and participation by Chamber members. • Respond to the changing educational needs of Cham-

ber members as they manage and adapt their work in a fluctuating environment. • Provide frequent, interactive discussions, events and forums to strengthen connections, understanding and bonds within the business, nonprofit and government sectors in the region. Two specific initiatives being launched by the Foundation in 2014-15 are a Business Education Program and a ULDI Alumni Association. Kulick said the Foundation has formed a Business Education Committee that includes representatives from the Chamber, SUNY Ulster, SUNY New Paltz, Mid-Hudson Small Business Development Center, Ulster County BOCES, Council of Industry, Hudson Valley Economic Development Corp., Ulster County Department of Employment & Training, and business and industry. “This team will work on initiatives such as a high school mentorship program, as well as develop a menu of business education programs offered throughout the region,” Kulick said. “Where necessary, guest speakers will be secured for program needs that are currently unavailable.” Kulick said the ULDI Alumni Association was formed to “bolster the connection, networking and advisory capacity” of the ULDI’s 350 graduates over the last 22 years. “The ULDI Alumni Association will host a reunion this coming fall featuring roundtable discussions and networking time and will schedule leadership workshops and discussions to advance the skills of alumni,” Kulick said. Kulick added that the Foundation would further advance a mentoring program to connect business, nonContinued on page 8

Hooray for Ulster County! Honors Galore at Community Breakfast

A beautiful morning view of the Catskill Mountains greeted Ulster County’s business leaders as they entered the Wiltwyck Golf Club for the Chamber’s annual Community Breakfast on June 26. If they needed any other reminders that Ulster County is a truly special place, they got it at the breakfast, where a host of students and new leaders were honored. The morning featured recognition of the Ulster Leadership Development Institute (ULDI) class of 2014. “This really was a tremendous class,” said Chamber President Ward Todd. “Our graduates are ready to make their mark on Ulster County,” he said. The Leadership program began in 1992. Since then, nearly 350 graduates have gone on to leadership positions within their businesses or communities. The Chamber Foundation will be administering ULDI beginning with the 2014-15 Class. ULDI is sponsored by M&T Bank with support from the Mohonk Mountain House. Ulster County Comptroller Elliott Auerbach introduced the students in his “Recognizing Success” program. Recognizing Success is an initiative that acknowledges the exceptional student who has stepped forward to “make a difference” in school or in the community. The Recognizing Success students included Matthew Hagerty of John A. Coleman Catholic High School, Nicholas Vollano of Ellenville High School, Nicholas Martorano of Highland High School, Peter Ryan of Kingston High School, Bianca Doran of Marlboro High School, Lily Claire Bergstein of New Paltz High School, Jonathan Loizou of Onteora High School, Ryan Lamastro of Rondout Valley High School, Bennie Lemus of Saugerties High School, Bridget McKeever of Wallkill Senior High School and Katelyn Wolgamuth of Woodstock Day School. The members of this year’s Coleman Catholic High School basketball team, which finished runner-up in the state in Class D, were also recognized. The team finished No. 2 in the state, “but will always be No. 1 in our hearts,” Todd said before a standing ovation.

Brooke Pickering-Cole of the Local Economies Project (LEP) explains the workings of the new Farm Hub on the Gill Corn Farm property in Hurley at the Chamber’s Annual Community Breakfast at Wiltwyck Golf Club. SUNY Ulster President Don Katt was given the honor of presenting Chamber scholarships to Rebecca Carroll of Kerhonkson and Catherine St. Clair of Stone Ridge. The Chamber has given out more than $28,000 in scholarships over the years, according to Katt. The winner and runner up of the Anita Williams Peck Public Speaking Competition were announced. Tyler Hubbs took the top scholarship of $3,500. Justin Conley was awarded $1,500. Both are graduating seniors at KHS. The guest speakers for the morning were Brooke Pickering-Cole and John Gill, who introduced business leaders to the new Local Economies Project (LEP) and its recently established farm hub. The farm hub being developed by LEP will be located on the former Gill Farm, 1,255 acres of prime farmland stretching north to south from Kingston to Marbletown along an historic corridor known as the Hurley Flats. LEP, part of the New World Foundation,

was launched in 2010 to support the local economy of the Hudson Valley. Pickering-Cole, manager of community relations for LEP, said farming is “still vibrant” in the region. “We have close to 500,000 acres in active agriculture still in the Hudson Valley,” she said. “We’ve got good soil. We’ve got plenty of water. We have a lot of young people interested in farming right now, so that’s exciting. We want to encourage that to the extent possible. “We have a long history of farming here, of course. I think there’s third, fourth, fifth generation farm families—even a couple in this room today. There’s a very strong knowledge base that we have to draw on. We are, of course, very near New York City, which is the largest market for food in the United States.” Gill, who agreed to stay on as farm manager, shared several photos of the farm and its history. His property was sold in December to the NoVo Foundation. Gill also talked about the opportunities

for local growers to be a part of the farm “incubator” that will use conventional and organic agricultural techniques. “We’re setting up this incubator,” he said. “To me, it’s almost like getting a fellowship.” The incubator will feature conventional and organic crops, as well as a hybrid of the two, so that LEP can track progress over time. Pickering-Cole said the incubator will provide aspiring farmers with “full immersion in a major farm operation” and access to infrastructure, equipment and business assistance. “We’re working with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Ulster County in developing the application process,” she said. “We will expect a minimum commitment of two to three years, but the program will be individualized so the number of years in the program will vary from participant to participant. “We’re particularly interested in recruiting applicants who are aspiring to farm on a mid-size scale and at the wholesale level.” And, of course, LEP will be recruiting those who plan to farm in the Hudson Valley. “We will also work with participants to facilitate access to land or management opportunities once they have completed their training,” she said. “The idea is to allow aspiring farmers to learn and acquire skills without the financial pressures or risks associated with keeping an individual farm operation going, and long-term to help encourage farm ownership and successful farm businesses in the Hudson Valley.” “There’s trade-offs that we’re looking at, but that’s this whole project,” Gill said. “We’re looking at melding conventional, organic, and a combination of both, using the best of both worlds to produce a crop. And we’re going to track this over time, try to figure out what is the most profitable for the grower.” The sponsor of the breakfast was The Sound of Life, which operates a Christian radio station on several frequencies throughout the Hudson Valley and Capital District.

‘We Were Representing the County’ Rave Reviews for ColorPage on Nevele Project Michael Treanor of Nevele Investors has dealt with the best of the best in the world of graphic communications and printing, so he isn’t easy to impress. As Treanor and his backers were preparing their gaming license application to the state for the proposed Nevele Resort Casino & Spa in Ellenville, Treanor called Chamber President Ward Todd and asked if he could recommend a Chamber member to prepare the application. “I knew ColorPage was printing as well as publishing books so I thought they’d be a great fit,” Todd said of the company located at 71 Ten Broeck Ave. in Kingston. It was a massive project that would require long nights and early mornings and everything the Kingston-based ColorPage could muster. Hanging in the balance was possibly the future of Ulster County landing a new gambling casino. Treanor has said the Nevele project will bring thousands of jobs to the area. Treanor called the application process “very involved and complicated.” The result was a custom-designed, full color, 12-volume gaming application, which featured thousands of full color pages, pullouts and oversized renderings, all accompanied by an electronic version.

Treanor said it resembled an innovative box set, featuring unique artwork and handwritten notes from Ulster County residents about what the casino would mean to the area. “The finished product was really quite elegant and highly professional,” Treanor said. “I’ve never seen anything quite like what ColorPage was able to do—ever. I’ve used printers in New York City for years and years and years and the team at ColorPage was just absolutely amazing. “I’ve never experienced the type of professionalism and high-quality product that ColorPage was able to do.” ColorPage owner Frank Campagna said his employees worked around the clock and also on weekends to complete a project that was complex and came with a tight deadline. All of the gaming applications were due June 30. “My team really impressed me as to how they stepped up to the plate and fulfilled their end,” Campagna said. “We as a company are familiar with doing complex document work like this, but what was on the line here—and everybody really felt it in our company—is that we were representing the county. “Everybody stepped up to the plate. Rave Reviews for ColorPage on Nevele Project Continued from page 7 erybody worked whatever hours they had to work to make sure this project was able to come together. It was an honor to be recommended and to be recognized for our capabilities to handle such a project.” Campagna said ColorPage took the project from conceptual design, digital file preparation, coordinating and printing the gaming application. “We worked through the night on multiple days … so that it was perfect,” he said. “The aesthetics of this project, to us, were going to be top-notch. That’s what we were going to deliver.” Delivered to the New York State Gaming Commission offices in Schenectady, the application was the final part of a more than two-year effort by Nevele Investors to bring a world-class casino to the area. A final award decision by the New York State Gaming Commission is expected early this fall. “Our entire team recognized the importance of what we were doing for the Ulster County community,” he said. “It was especially gratifying to know that our company’s efforts played such a significant role in the effort to bring such an important project to the Hudson Valley area. ColorPage also had some other goals, which fit into the Chamber’s Buy Local agenda. The paper came from the Mohawk Mill in Cohoes, N.Y., one of the few remaining

of its kind in the state. “We made sure that all the components of the project were purchased here in New York State,” he said. “That was one of the goals and objectives we set for the project upfront.” The application was also eco-friendly, Campagna said. ColorPage tried to use companies certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. “Even the materials inside the ring binders were either from recycled material or could be recycled,” he said. ColorPage, which began in 1976, is an award-winning, full-service marketing, printing and publishing company with 22 employees at its Midtown Kingston location. Campagna said ColorPage can offer an à la carte set of services or serve as the general contractor on a project. “If you need us to manage the design, we’ll just manage the design,” he said. “If you need us to do the printing, we’ll just do the printing. If you need us to write copy, we’ll just write the copy. “If you come to us and you need us to put everything together … that has become a more prominent offering that has been bringing a lot of success for our clients and growth for our company.” ColorPage, located at 71 Ten Broeck Ave. in Kingston, can be reached at (845) 331-7581 or www.colorpageonline.com.

Educate, Mentor, Connect and Empower Continued from page 5 vance a mentoring program to connect business, nonprofit and government leaders (many of whom are ULDI graduates) with high school students. “The leadership team for this program is forming now and will seek to partner with regional school administrators and educators to develop mentorship opportunities that will provide practical tips and suggestions on preparing for specific industries and/or career paths through discussion and interaction with those that lead and manage such,” Kulick said. The Chamber is in need of tax-deductible contributions to move these new initiatives forward, and looks forward to providing recognition to those contributors who invest in the Foundation’s vision. The levels range from a $250 Success Initiator to a $10,000 Vision Partner. For more information on the Chamber Foundation, contact Kulick at (845) 338-5100 or [email protected].

Olive Country Store Hosts Mixer Continued from page 3 be a junior at Kingston High School this fall, was the youngest intern ever hired by the Tonner Doll Co. last fall. Her work can be seen at http://abbeys-eye.weebly.com. Stier’s two restaurants will provide the food for the mixer. The Olive Country Store & Café offers breakfast, lunch and dinner. Stier is a fixture at Chamber mixers and is asked to cater many of them. He said he appreciates the mixers because he works 90 to 100 hours a week—including major holidays—and getting to see his fellow business owners can be a challenge. “I find it very valuable not only to meet and greet new people coming into the community, but, of course, maintain con-

tacts with a lot of the existing businesspeople,” Stier said. “We’re all working so hard that we have very little free time to go out on our own.” Olives Country Store & Café is located at 3110 State Route 28, Shokan Square, in Shokan. Find out more at www.olivescountrystoreandcafe.com. Chamber mixers are a great way to network and promote your business. Be sure to bring plenty of business cards. This free networking event is open to Chamber members and prospective members. Reservations are a must and can be made by calling the Chamber office at 845-338-5100 or be registering online at www.ulsterchamber.org.
