Volume 1, Issue 1

Letter from the President

Welcome to our new newsletter format! Peel, Inc. will be managing our newsletters going forward at no cost to the HOA. Katy Clark will continue to be our communications chair and help with the content of the newsletters. Thanks to all who took the time to attend our HOA Town Hall meeting last month – congratulations to our winners of the $50 gift cards! I hope you found it informative and hope that the board was able to answer any questions you may have had about what is going on in and around Mountain Lodge. The minutes from the meeting are posted on our resident portal at www.realmanage.com. If you’ve lost your sign in to the RealManage portal please contact them at 1-866-4RealService. Pape Dawson Engineering joined us at the meeting to deliver the results of their traffic study. Through the results of the first study we’ve identified several areas that will benefit from speed humps. Additional studies will be performed on other areas of the neighborhood for additional humps. The board is looking at our financing options for these speed humps and we’ll be sharing our decision with you at our next Town Hall meeting in November. Another change coming for Mountain Lodge will be a complete upgrade of the technology that runs our gates. This will include upgraded call boxes and an end to our current code system. We’ll be moving to a remote control only entry with all visitors having to call from the call box. Details will follow in the upcoming months but we believe this will eliminate many of our unwanted “guests” who have stumbled on a Mountain Lodge code. As far as improving our safety, next year the board will be discussing installing cameras at both the gates and the pool areas. We are beginning a formal neighborhood COPS program. If you are interested in participating please contact our Safety Chair, Josh Morris, at [email protected]. Joe Cochran, our long term Maintenance Chair who has been an invaluable asset to this community, has decided to take some well deserved rest and enjoy his retirement. So, we are looking for a new Maintenance Chair. This person would be the liaison between the community and RealManage regarding anything needing to be repaired around the property. If you are interested please contact me at [email protected]. I want to take a moment to thank you all for helping to keep the pools an enjoyable place to spend some time during this long, hot summer. We’ve had a few incidents but (Continued on Page 3)

What’s at Stake?

The Health of Your Trees Most of us have trees in our front yards that were provided by our home builders. Did you know that the stakes supporting these trees need to be removed within the first year? This is because stakes provide artificial support that replaces a supportive trunk and root system. Movement of the trunk helps strengthen the tree by thickening it and giving it taper from bottom to top. Trunk movement also stimulates root growth. The artificial support from the stakes leaves tree trunks weak and their root systems less developed. Bottom line - all staking material needs to be removed after roots have established. This can be as early as a few months, but should be no longer than one growing season.

Daytripping With Dave A really nice day trip enjoyable by adults and children is right in our backyard. The Natural Bridge Caverns and Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch are located just 20 minutes north of Mountain Lodge. They both are family oriented attractions that receive visitors from all over the world. You can do all of this in one full day or split it into two separate trips depending on your schedule. Natural Bridge Caverns is the largest cavern in Texas and attracts more than 250,000 visitors a year. It has been named in the National Register of Historic Places and USA Today named it one of America’s “10 great places to get nature on film”. A guided walking tour takes about 75 minutes, however visitors are allowed to proceed at their own pace if they prefer. Cameras are allowed and comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The tour is not suitable for strollers or children that need to be carried. There are also a gift shop, snack bar and picnic grounds available. Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch covers 400 acres and is a driving tour of 4 miles on paved Hill Country roads. There are over 500 animals representing 40 species of native, exotic, and endangered wildlife. This is a great photo experience as many of the animals will come right up to your car. This tour is definitely at your own pace and can take from one to several hours depending on your interest. The Wildlife Ranch also has a learning center, gift shop, a petting zoo and the Safari Camp Grill where you can get sandwiches and sodas. Directions – take Hwy 281 north 5 ½ miles to Hwy 1863 exit. Take 1863 to the right (east) and go 8 ½ miles to 4-way stop at Hwy 3009. Take Hwy 3009 to right and go 2 miles to the Natural Bridge Caverns/ Wildlife Ranch entrance on the right. Log on to the respective sites for much more detailed info and to check schedules & ticket pricing. Although these two attractions are located next to each other they do have separate entry fees.
