LIEUTENTANT JAMES SMITH BSc (Hons) MCMI ROYAL NAVY

James Smith was born in Bristol in 1982 and educated at Reading School. He returned to Bristol to read Geology at Bristol University before graduating and undertaking a short career in finance. Joining the Royal Navy at Britannia Royal Naval College in 2006 as a Warfare Officer, he completed Fleet Time in HM Ships LIVERPOOL, ILLUSTRIOUS, ROEBUCK and CHIDDINGFOLD. On completion of professional training he was selected for a first complement appointment as a Navigating Officer and joined MCM2 Crew 5 in 2008. An eventful two years saw service in HM Ships HURWORTH, CATTISTOCK, and CHIDDINGFOLD and included deployment in support of OP TELIC. Specialising in Air Defence Lieutenant Smith began training as a Fighter Controller in late 2010 and joined HMS DRAGON’s first crew during her extensive trials and work up period. A busy and demanding 18 month appointment included numerous AAW exercises with highlights including successful Sea Viper firings and the first digital Fighter Control at sea sorties. Joining HMS ILLUSTRIOUS in 2013 for a short appointment as Battle Watch Director, time was spent within the Air Department ensuring the integration of numerous Army, RAF and RN Squadrons. Tasking included Joint Warrior, OST and the initial stages of OP Cougar 13. Lt Smith assumed Command of HMS BITER and Manchester and Salford Universities Royal Naval Unit in December 2013. Married to Susanna, also a Warfare Officer, he lives in Bristol and enjoys rugby and the theatre; the latter usually having to be explained to him by his very understanding and patient wife.
