Expectantly Asking God to fulfill His word. 1. Are you the kind of person who tends to believe something is too good to be true? What sorts of things have you come across that were really too good to be true? 2. Read Psalm 89:34-52. Why does the Psalmist say that God can’t take back his promises to David but then say in v. 39 that he renounced this covenant? What do you think is going on here, and how does Jesus become the answer? 3. Read 2 Samuel 7:1-7. Have you ever felt like you had to do something for God for Him to be on your side or extending His goodness to you? What’s the difference between knowing that God doesn’t need us to do anything in order to fulfill His promises to us and being “compelled” to live for Jesus (2 Cor. 5:9-15)? 4. Read 2 Samuel 7:8-11. What does God specifically promise to David? What are some of the ways we’ve received those promises through Jesus? How do we live in the “already/not yet” of those promises? 5. Read 1 Samuel 8:5-22 and 2 Samuel 7:1217. How is God bringing his people full circle by fulfilling this promise with Jesus? Discuss some ways that we still turn away from Jesus as our King, and put our hope in other people, things, ideas, etc.? 6. Read 2 Samuel 7:18-29. Take some time responding like David, and boldly pray the promises of God for one another’s lives and circumstances.
