Life Group Sermon Study Man on Fire-Coming Attractions July 7, 2013

Key Scriptures this Week: Numbers 27:12-23, Deuteronomy 34, John 17:17, Matthew 17:1, John 8:34, Romans 6:23, John 1:17, Galatians 2:16, Revelation 21

Break the Ice: A key part of healthy group life is making sure your group is getting to know each other and building good relationships. Break the ice by using a few of these questions to get your group started.  What is one teaching from your parents that has made an impact on you?  Where have you seen God move in your life this week?  What did you learn about God from the message this week?

Engage with Questions: It is recommended that you read the “Key Scriptures this Week” (above) as a group before discussing the following questions: 1. Discuss how our culture views God’s Word. Do you believe any of these views? What has been key to your coming to a belief that God’s Word is one that protects and shapes us? Give an example from your life that validates this quote from Charles Spurgeon, “There is nothing in the law of God that will rob you of happiness, it only denies you that which would cost you sorrow.” 2. Moses responded with a godly maturity when God told him that he would not enter the Promised Land. What experiences or teachings do you think enabled Moses to make this mature response? In your life what experiences or teachings have moved you to spiritual maturity? Is there an area in your life in which you desire to become mature? 3. John 17:17 says, “Sanctify them in the truth, your Word is truth.” Share with the group what the Word of God means to you. How does a person stay true to God’s Word in a world that is in opposition to it? What importance does the body of believers play in your obedience to God’s Word? As a follower of Jesus, there will be persecution. Do you welcome it? If persecution brought you closer to knowing Jesus, would you welcome it? To be persecuted, others must know in whom you put your trust. Do they?

Inspire Movement: Challenge group members to apply this study to their daily walk. Over last month, name a person who is new to your life? How can you share with them the love of Jesus? How can you share with them who Jesus is?

Equip Your Mind: We encourage all life group members to take time to memorize God’s Word. Sanctify them in the truth; your Word is truth. John 17:17

Below are sermon note highlights from Sunday:

“There is nothing in the law of God that will rob you of happiness; it only denies you that which would cost you sorrow.” – Charles Spurgeon 1) Do you know what God’s Word really says? 2) Do you believe God’s Word to be true? Sanctification starts with the submission to God’s Word and continues with the application of God’s Word. 3) Who is the main character in Scripture – Jesus or me?

If we disregard God’s Word, then we disregard God’s holiness. If we disregard God’s holiness, then we disregard the need for a Savior. The minute we take hold of the eternal entitlement, we simultaneously forfeit any earthly entitlement. God always makes good on His promises. Moses was a symbol to the “coming attraction.” Jesus is the better Moses. Moses delivered God’s people from slavery in Egypt; Jesus delivers us from the slavery of sin. Moses went up on a mountain and brought down God’s Law on stone tablets. Jesus went up on a mountain and brought down God’s grace with a wooden cross. One day Jesus will usher us into the Promised Land – Revelation 21.

GROUP PRAYER:   

Ask God for godly maturity like Moses had, to accept God’s will when it differs from ours. Ask God for strength to stay true to God’s Word. Pray for Aaron and other preaching pastors in future weeks at TPCC. Pray for health, strength, protection, wisdom, and boldness.
