Life Group Sermon Study Man on Fire-What God Wants Most June 30, 2013

Key Scriptures this Week: Exodus 19-20; Col. 2:13-14; I John 5:2-3; II Cor. 3:12-18 Break the Ice: A key part of healthy group life is making sure your group is getting to know each other and building good relationships. Break the ice by using a few of these questions to get your group started.  Share some of the “House Rules” you had in your home when you were growing up.  Where have you seen God move in your life this week?  What did you learn about God from the message this week?

Engage with Questions: It is recommended that you read the “Key Scriptures this Week” (above) as a group before discussing the following questions. 1. In his sermon, Aaron stated, “God isn’t against happiness and wealth, but it’s not His end game. His end game is a transformed heart and a redeemed world.” No matter how many times God would deliver, protect, and provide for the Israelites, they kept sliding back into bitterness, grumbling, and doubt. Share how we, at times, can be just like the Israelites in our daily struggles. What are some ways that we can remember God’s faithfulness before we slide back into forgetting? 2. Read Exodus 19:1-6. God says all the earth is His. Not 50/50, but 100% owner. We often live as though God owes us answers. But God does not need to justify Himself to us. Why is this foundational to our understanding of the Bible? Read Psalm 115:3. 3. Read Exodus 20:3-17. The Ten Commandments reflect the very nature of God. To neglect God’s law isn’t just sinful – it is unsafe. What are some ways that you have seen God’s protection when you were obedient to His law and commands? What about an example of disaster and heartache that was a consequence of being disobedient?

Inspire Movement: The focus of this exercise is to challenge group members to apply the study to their daily walk. Memorize Exodus 20:3-17 (Ten Commandments). See below. Equip Your Mind: Below is a simple, fun way to memorize the Ten Commandments. Many of the phrases rhyme, while others are associated with the specific commandment. ONE – GOD IS ONE “You shall have no other gods before Me.” (vs.3) TWO – TABOO (What is taboo? Idols, false gods). “You shall not make for yourself an idol.” (vs.4) THREE – TRINITY “You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God.” (vs.7) FOUR – CHURCH DOOR (Where you should go on Sabbath). “Remember the Sabbath day” (vs.8) FIVE – ALIVE (The only commandment with a promise). “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long.” (vs.12) SIX-FEET-UNDER (Don’t put anybody six feet under). “You shall not murder.” (vs.13) SEVEN-YEAR ITCH (A phrase that suggests that after seven years of marriage, boredom may occur). “You shall not commit adultery.” (vs.14) EIGHT – DON’T TAKE! “You shall not steal.” (vs.15) NINE – MALIGN (What does it mean to malign someone? It means to falsely accuse them). “You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.” (vs.16) TEN – A PERFECT 10 (We often grade things on a scale of one to ten. One being the least and ten being the very best. We admire a 10. But be careful, because what you admire, you might begin to lust after). “You shall not covet.” (vs.17)

Below are sermon note highlights from Sunday: The Ten Commandments are a confirmation of relationship, not a condition of one. 1. He reminds them of what He has done for them. Rescue 2. God is inviting them into a covenant relationship with Himself. Transformation 3. God says they are a treasured possession. Value 4. God says all the earth is His. Ownership God does not need to justify Himself to you. A relationship with God begins with a correct understanding of who He is and who you are not. Commands 1-3: How we are to respond to God. Commands 4-5: How we are to live. Commands 6-7: How we are to interact with others. Commands 8-10: How we are to function within society. Idolatry is giving your time, energy, thoughts, affections, and attention to anything other than God because you don’t feel that He is enough.

Life Group Prayer: Pray for the staff and elders as they minister to the body at TPCC. Pray for God’s guidance. Pray for the Saturday evening services beginning August 3. Pray for volunteers to serve. Pray for seekers to attend that would normally not attend on Sundays. Pray for the construction process and workers. Pray for productivity and safety. Pray for Aaron and the preaching staff. Pray for wisdom, clarity, boldness, and protection.
