to process corrosive rare earth solutions LINDSAY CHEMICAL COMPANY started to manufacture gas lamp mantles in 1902—using thorium nitrate obtained from monazite sand. T h e atomic energy program changed things in a hurry, and today 9 5 % of Lindsay's production is devoted to rare earth and thorium chemicals.

Rare earth processing requires lots of nitric, sulfuric and phosphoric acids. Just handling these corrosive acids was a big problem until the introduction of Stainless Steel, and today this valuable metal is widely used a t Lindsay for piping, valves, pumps, tanks, centrifuges and filters.
