JANESVILLE MESSENGER ■ Wednesday, July 30, 2014

Explore technology at historic Tallman House JANESVILLE — The Rock County Historical Society is launching its first thematic tour, Tallman’s Technologies, at the Lincoln-Tallman House. The tour, the first in a five-part series, aims to bring the Tallman House to life, which is the mission of the RCHS — bringing past to the present. During the tour, visitors are taken back to the year 1872, when William Morrison placed his residence and grounds up for sale. Visitors play the role of potential buyers of the house and through a three-act format, have a conversation with William Morrison Tallman, view the state-of-the-art amenities of the home and interact with the technology that made the house unique in an posttour exhibit. “Tallman’s Technologies helps visitors understand why William Morrison Tallman built his home the way he did, why he included certain novel amenities we now consider essential, and why he chose Janesville for his home,” Michael Reuter, executive director of RCHS, said in a news release. “In this way, people will

Deadline:

leave the Tallman House and by extension the Rock County Historical Society with a more immersive and educational experience that allows people to better appreciate the home amenities that Tallman held dear during his time, but that we take for granted today.” Educational curriculum and lesson plans that center around the tour’s main themes — engineering, architecture, communications and preservation — offer more content for teachers and students to use in the classroom. Beginning Monday, Aug. 18, the Tallman’s Technologies tour will be offered at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. daily through September. In October the tour will be offered on Saturdays and Sundays only. Beginning Nov. 20 through December, the tour will again be offered seven days a week. General information about Tallman’s Technologies, how to book a tour and more will be made available Friday, Aug. 1, by going online to TallmanTours.org. The content will include a blog, called Tallman Tales, which will pro-

vide updates about ongoing events and projects at the site. “Imagine a home illuminated by natural gas and that was equipped with indoor running water and an indoor privy,” Reuter said. “This was also a home designed to make everyday life a little more relaxing and had an intercom system. It was a home ahead of its time, and these tours will help showcase the unique innovations of the Lincoln-Tallman House.” The cost for the Tallman’s Technologies tours is as follows: • $10 for adults • $9 for seniors, students and RCHS members • $6 for children between the ages of 5 and 17 • $5 for groups of 10 or more people. Visitors can combine the Tallman’s Technologies tour with the traditional visit to RCHS: • $15 for adults • $12 for seniors, students and RCHS members • $8 for children between the ages of 5 and 17. To view a video trailer about the tours, visit TallmanTours.org.

WHAT’S UP, AUTO DOC? Is an electric car right for you? A growing number of people would probably say yes if it weren’t for a few fundamental knocks, relative to internal-combustion vehicles. Sadly, these have almost nothing to do with the way electric cars ride and ride, which is really as good as any internal combustion vehicle. And they’re usually much quieter. The first knock is that they, as yet, don’t go very far on a charge and the recharge takes hours, which means you’re stuck for a while. This largely relegates electric cars to local duty where you can complete all your daily errands and get back home without running out of juice. Plug in for the night and start all over again. You would need to weigh whether this is worth never having to go to the gas station again as well as the extra cost for an electric vehicle, which is about double that of a comparable (well-equipped) four cylinder compact. But the biggest knock of all is selection. Of the 250 or so different vehicle nameplates available to buyers, there are only a few electrics, most notably the Nissan Leaf. Until that increases to meet the practical needs of daily transportation, electric cars will continue to be fringe players.
