LIVING IN EXILE 1 Peter 1:10-12– Concerning Salvation January 31, 2016

KNOW: We have received what many longed for. What we have as a possession now many could only gaze at from afar. Salvation is amazing; even angels long to know more about God's eternal plan concerning his image bearers. DO: Receive what others longed to have offered to them.

...things into which angels long to look. -1 Peter 1:12 I. THE GRAND MYSTERY  Salvation is our goal. It has always been the goal for those who seek God (Ps. 119:41; Phil 3:10; 1 Pet. 1:9).  Grace is the story from Genesis to Revelation. Our salvation is not a new salvation, only the messengers have changed (vss. 10-11; Ex. 14:13-14; 2 Sam. 12:13; Eph. 3:4-5; Heb. 1:1-2).

The Old and New Testaments are one book, inspired by the same Spirit focused on the same subject - Jesus the Messiah (Gen. 3:15; Rev. 22:20).

The prophets didn't always understand everything they prophesied. They searched intently to know who this Messiah would be, what his sufferings would entail, and when he would arrive (Gen. 3:15; Ps. 22; Isa. 53; Zech. 9:9;

II. CONCERNING THIS SALVATION  God's eternal plan of salvation: "The Covenant of Redemption" via the economy of the Godhead (Isa. 48:16; 1 Pet. 1:1-2).

 

The prophets prophesied via the Spirit; the apostles proclaimed via the Spirit (Eph. 3:4-5). Angels were not a part of God's plan to save sinners in eternity past. They long to understand this agreement between the Father, Son and Spirit (vs. 12).

1. In what way were the prophets of old serving us when they prophesied via the Holy Spirit in their day? Did they also serve the people of their day as well? In what ways? 2. How were the prophets and other “believers” saved in Old Testament times? By law or by grace? 3. It seems that so many were amazed by God’s grace in our text for Sunday -prophets, apostles, even angels. Why, do you think, are so many of us today not amazed by it? 4. Did the prophets understand that the Messiah would suffer? Peter implies this in our text. Why then were so many expecting Jesus to set up God’s kingdom immediately? (see Ps. 22; Isa. 53; Acts 1:6) 5. Peter says the Holy Spirit is sent from heaven. Isn’t the Holy Spirit God? How then can he be “sent”? 6. What are some things we might do to help us to never take the grace we’ve received for granted or forget the “joy of our salvation”?
