This publication shares the journeys of our Franciscan community as they work in joyful service in the spirit of Saints Francis and Clare. Editorial Team: Elizabeth Mahoney Rydeen, editor Jan Roering, editorial assistant Amanda Frieler, graphic designer Julie Hanson, direct mail specialist Sister Rose Margaret Schneider Sister Elise Saggau Sister Carmen Barsody Associate Geri Dietz Printed by: Spectrum Marketing Services, Little Falls, Minn.

Mexico Sisters Carol Schmit, Aurora Tovar and Isa Berrones serve St. Catherine of Siena Parish in Ocampo, Coahuila, a remote area of rural Mexico. It was high noon and hot as they walked with the people in a Palm Sunday procession. They joined in the hymn where each verse focused on an aspect of the Passion with the refrain, “Forgive your people, O God.”

Our Mission:

We, Franciscan Sisters of Little Falls, Minnesota, are a community of women religious whose members are called to live the Gospel joyfully and to reverence the earth and all of God’s creation. In the spirit of Saints Francis and Clare, we embody a life of prayer, simple living and service to those in need. We are committed to nonviolence as we recognize the need for healing in ourselves and in our world. We seek to build communities of peace and justice wherever we are called to serve. © March 2018 Franciscan Sisters of Little Falls, Minnesota

Nicaragua Franciscan Associates and Faithful Fools from Managua and San Diego, Nicaragua, gathered in January for a weekend retreat in the rural town of Palacaguina. They were joined by Associate Brianda Cediel and Sisters Carmen Barsody and Michelle L’Allier who all traveled from the United States. It was a magnificent weekend of strengthening the web of community as they reflected together on the Franciscan values and how we are called to live them in our everyday lives. The retreat ended with a beautiful ritual as three individuals made their commitment as Franciscan Associates. Associate Brianda Cediel (second from right) shares food and conversation with several young women from the retreat.

Dear friends, This issue of Our Journey is special—special in that it lists the names of all our generous donors who support our mission, ministries and Franciscan way of life, the impact of which is revealed in the articles and illustrated in the many photos and captions that tell the stories of the sisters’ work. Literally hundreds of names fill the pages of this issue, which also serves as our annual report. Each gift received is gratefully acknowledged, each donor remembered in prayer. Oh, how the sisters give thanks! It’s also special in that we highlight Sisters Beatrice Eichten, Rose Margaret Schneider, Susan Knutson and Grace Skwira, the current Leadership team of the Franciscan Sisters. It was my honor to visit with them as they talked about their time in Leadership, their challenges, their accomplishments. See the article “The grace of the office” on the next page. In June they leave office and a new group of sisters will take on the responsibility of leading the congregation. (This issue went to print just before the elections were held.) With this issue, we’ve done our best to represent the variety of mission and outreach activities in which the sisters are involved—those concrete ways the sisters live the Gospel . . . with energy, spirit and peace—made possible by your generous support! We remember and honor 50 years of ministry in Arizona and the 100th birthday of Sister Marie Theis. Associate Cheri Hample reflects on her path to the Associate Relationship. Enjoy! More than anything, this issue is a tribute to you, the friends, family and donors of the Franciscan Sisters, and all the people who journey with the sisters in serving the poor and marginalized, caring for Mother Earth and promoting the Franciscan values. Thank you for supporting the Franciscan Sisters with your time, talents and financial gifts—and for being with us in spirit and in prayer every step of the way. May the Lord bless and keep you always. Peace and all good,

The grace

of the office Elizabeth Rydeen

Sisters often talk about their call to religious life and their commitment to serve and respond to the needs of the poor. Serving their community in a leadership capacity is also a call to which Sisters Beatrice Eichten, Rose Margaret Schneider, Susan Knutson and Grace Skwira, the current Leadership team of the Franciscan Sisters of Little Falls, responded. As they end their leadership term of office this June, they shared their reflections. They knew they had two major responsibilities. “Our key responsibility was to support and enhance the personal and spiritual well-being of the sisters and the many people who are a part of our extended Franciscan community,” said Sister Bea, community minister. “The responsibilities of leadership are to guide, to lead, and to be ever-present to the sisters.” Sisters Bea and Rose Margaret were part of Franciscan Sisters Health Care, Inc., when sponsorship was transferred to another Catholic healthcare organization in 1993. Sister Susan previously served in health care administration, Sister Grace as vocation minister and corporate secretary. Sisters Bea and Rose Margaret had served in community leadership previously, knew what the job entailed and were open to respond to the call of the sisters; Sisters Susan and Grace were new to the role of community leadership. Most recently, Sister 4

Susan worked with the homeless population in San Francisco and Sister Grace as a missionary in Mexico. Sister Grace was invited by Leadership to complete the unexpired term of Sister Carolita Mauer who died in July 2014. Early in her discernment, she came upon Matthew 12:18, which says, “Here is my servant, whom I have chosen.” It was clear to her that these words were an affirmation that God was calling her, choosing her. Sister Susan, too, was open to the Spirit and listened to her sisters in community who felt she had the strengths needed at the time. A second responsibility they had related to future planning. For decades, sisters in Leadership were involved in the growth of the community and overseeing expanding ministries. Today, with fewer and older members, the reality is different. “We knew we had the responsibility to discern how to right-size our properties and buildings and transition ministries as we faced the future,” said Sister Bea. With clear directives from the Delegate Assembly of 2010, they set out to create a process for future planning. They set up a variety of work groups to deal with issues of personnel, sisters’ health care, on- and off-campus ministries and properties/physical space.

"We did what was ours to do." Daunted by the intense work ahead of them, the new team was energized knowing that they had the full support of the sisters. They started bringing the community together twice a year for updates and consultation. “It was our priority to include the sisters in the process,” Sister Rose Margaret said. In 2014, the community requested that the Leadership team consider serving two more years in order to bring the future planning to implementation. They accepted, knowing it meant they would serve for seven years instead of the usual five. Their term was a balancing act between future planning and seeing to the needs of the sisters. The community was changing as more sisters retired from active ministry and moved home to the motherhouse. “A challenge,” Sister Grace said, “is how to best minister to so many of our sisters who were once active in ministry, but because of age or infirmity, can no longer do the work they once did. I’ve been blessed to see our sisters age gracefully, deepening their personal relationship with God and continuing to do whatever they are yet able to do to make a difference in the world.” As they prepare to leave office, the four agree that it’s been an honor to serve in Leadership. “It is a special gift,” said Sister Susan, “to spend private time with sisters who were our mentors and teachers and now are models as they approach the end of life with grace.” “I think we fulfilled our mandate of future planning while also caring for the sisters,” said Sister Bea, “and our sense is we leave office loved and respected.” Sister Susan, paraphrasing a quote from Saint Francis, added, “We did what was ours to do.” “And,” added Sister Rose Margaret, “we all experienced what we recognize as ‘the grace of the office’—God guiding and protecting us.” 2018 Spring Our Journey

My path to becoming a Franciscan Associate Associate Cheri Hample

“I can tell you about my path, but I am only a little wire—God is the power. Talk to others, the sisters, the brothers and the people who work with them. Some are not Christians, talk to them. You will know it when you see it. It is very beautiful.” —A Simple Path, by Mother Teresa As I reflect on the path that led me to become a Franciscan Associate, the years are filled with spiritual seeking, experiences and explorations along with risk taking and hard work. I was baptized in the Presbyterian Church in Oakes, N. Dak., where my grandparents were longtime elders. My grandmother Helene Hample was the organist and choir director. As a child I loved sitting on the organ bench with her. I recall a song she played each Sunday before the service started, “Quam Dilecta”: “The Lord is in His Holy Temple . . . let all the earth keep silence.” My spiritual path then led me to the Methodist Church in Breckenridge, where my father accepted a teaching position when I was in 2nd grade. I attended church, Sunday school, youth group, sang in the choir and was confirmed there. The minister often focused only on sin, becoming emotional and raising his voice during his sermons. I stopped going to this church in senior high. I had several friends in Breckenridge who were Catholic and sometimes went to church with them. I loved the ritual of the Mass and Eucharist. In my heart I felt I was supposed to be a Catholic! During junior high, I volunteered at St. Francis Hospital as a candy striper, and it was there I met and learned about the Franciscan Sisters. Words cannot adequately describe the impact the sisters and volunteering had on me. Sister Paula Pohlmann was the hospital administrator during part of my time there, and my mother worked in the laboratory with Sister Ardis Cloutier. This experience was life-changing and began my commitment to volunteering and service. Fast forward to 1976-77 when I was in graduate school at the University of Minnesota and working as the director of Pillsbury Club, a residential dorm for young women, located in downtown Minneapolis and owned by the Women’s Christian Association. The dorm was next door to St. Olaf Catholic Church where I attended Mass and eventually enrolled in adult religious preparation and was confirmed in December 1977. 6

Cheri Hample: “I am grateful I said yes to the path God provided me.”

It has been 40 years since I converted to Catholicism, and I have tried to live a life of purpose, offering love, friendship, forgiveness, kindness and trusting in God to help keep me on this path. “It is not how much you do but how much love you put into the doing and sharing with others that is important.” (A Simple Path) In July 2014, I traveled to Little Falls and met with Sister Ardis who encouraged me to contact Sister Paula which led me to Clare’s Well and lunch with her. Soon I was volunteering at Clare’s Well and spending time with Sisters Paula, Jan and Carol, which allowed me to see the Franciscan values in action. I was encouraged to explore becoming an associate and, after meeting with Geri Dietz, I was confident this was the path God had chosen for me. My personal values aligned perfectly with the Franciscans. After meetings with Geri and studying the lives of Francis and Clare, I was invited to become an associate. “I desire to be an Associate of this Franciscan Community of Little Falls because I wish to be sister and brother to all of you and to all of God’s creatures. With you and with God’s help I want to make the world a more loving, just and peaceful community. Together with you, I want to carry the spirit of Francis and Clare into our world” (from the Associate Commitment liturgy).

Catita Cazares, Sister Shirley Mueller and Juan are members of Rayo de Luz and part of the team that serves breakfast on Friday mornings.

Rayo de Luz feeds the hungry . . . one taco at a time Elizabeth Rydeen

Each Friday morning, Sister Shirley Mueller cooks a large pan of pinto beans seasoned with onions, peppers and cumin, and mixes it all with rice to make a complete protein. She and Sister Mary Hroscikoski stuff these beans and rice into 54 fresh corn tortillas to make flavorful breakfast tacos. Sister Shirley then brings the warm tacos to her Rayo de Luz group for the weekly breakfast they serve to homeless and poor persons and the morning Mass-goers at the downtown parish in McAllen, Tex. On these mornings the St. Francis Centennial Garden at Sacred Heart Parish is abuzz with activity. The members of Rayo de Luz met while volunteering at the nearby refugee center. Now they work together to provide this weekly breakfast of tacos, beverages and human caring for those who live on the downtown streets. “A few people come back or stay even after they are full just to be with us,” said Sister Shirley. “Some are so alone and isolated. We try to bring peace and understanding and basically offer friendship.” When everyone has left the Centennial Garden, Rayo de Luz takes the extra tacos to men standing on the nearby street corners waiting for day labor and to those making their homes in nearby parks and alleys. The name Rayo de Luz is inspired by Pope Francis who said, “May we be in this world a ray of light that shines forth bringing joy and peace to the hearts of all men and women.” The group is committed to this ministry but also to each other. On Wednesdays they meet after morning Mass to pray with Sister Anita Jennissen’s centering prayer group. Just as Saint Francis said, “God gave me brothers,” Sister Shirley says, “God gave me this wonderful team.”

Sister Joanne Heim’s life is rooted in prayer Elizabeth Rydeen

Sister Joanne Heim felt called to religious life as a student at Cathedral High School in St. Cloud. She sought guidance from her school counselor who told her of several religious communities close by. He then spoke fondly of three of his relatives who were Franciscan Sisters of Little Falls. He said, “I think you would like it there.” She took his advice, and found it to be a good fit. As a nurse, Sister Joanne enjoyed working the evening shift. As she helped settle the patients for the night, she learned that in addition to physical care, people need emotional and spiritual support as well. They needed to share their stories and to be heard. Her patients began to invite her into prayer with them, which she saw as a tremendous gift. From nursing she transitioned into pastoral care and ministered as a chaplain at various hospitals for many years. Now Sister Joanne Heim: “Thank you for your generosity and goodness!” semi-retired, Sister Joanne continues visiting the sick and homebound as a volunteer through the twin parish of St. Peter’s and St. Paul’s in St. Cloud. She also visits her elderly Franciscan Sisters in Little Falls on a weekly basis. Sister Joanne’s daily life is rooted in prayer with special attention to benefactors of the Franciscan Sisters. She remarks, “I keep the handful of ornaments I receive from our Development Office all year long and I ask Jesus to help them with the concerns of their hearts. I also pray that each person will know Jesus’ personal love for them and for others. As this type of relationship grows and is shared, our world will be more peaceful."

Franciscan Life Center Sister Jan Kilian and Associate Rick Dietz

Just as you might expect, a Franciscan life center is wherever there is a Franciscan. By that account, the center we are writing about is a Center of centers and this Center with a capital “C” is located on the campus of the Franciscan Sisters in Little Falls. This Franciscan Life Center was established to nurture and extend the Gospel values of continual conversion, humility, poverty and contemplation as lived by Jesus, Saints Francis and Clare of Assisi as well as by our Franciscan Community of sisters and associates. A Franciscan Life Resource Group began meeting in 2001. In this new millennium, the Gospel as perceived by Saint Francis required new ways for sharing beyond the walls of the Convent. Members of this Resource Group and Community Leadership created the Franciscan Life Office (later changed to Franciscan Life Center (FLC)) with Sister Bernice Rieland as the director. Current FLC director Rick Dietz and staff members Sisters Gloria Haider, Michelle L’Allier and LaVonne Schackmann continue to encourage all who seek God by promoting and sharing gospel values that are foundational to our Franciscan Third Order Regular Rule of Life. The FLC facilitates opportunities for people to come to know and embrace more fully these gospel values. Programs and events sponsored by the FLC are designed

to enhance the spiritual life of our Franciscan Community as well as others. Twice a year week-long retreats, seasonal days of reflection, Taizé, centering and Earth Day prayer services are open to anyone. Retreats for individuals or groups can be custom designed upon request. Spiritual direction is facilitated as FLC offers continuing education for sisters and others who are trained spiritual directors. The Center serves as a focal point for anyone seeking to find a director for their own personal spiritual direction. In 2016 a special program—Engaging Franciscan Spirituality—was created for men and women interested in more in-depth learning and experience of Franciscan spirituality. The initial cohort met monthly for two years. However, nine of the first participants didn’t want the learning to end! So the FLC designed “Still Engaged,” a second year-long program for them. Their group, plus a new two-year group, meet on the same day and time but in different locations under the seasoned leadership of Franciscan Associates and Sisters with advanced education in Franciscan spirituality and theology. Members of the FLC staff continue to be invited to give presentations on aspects of Franciscan spirituality in parishes and with church clubs/groups. This is another way for FLC to extend Franciscan values beyond the walls of the convent. We pray that all of us will continue to turn our Franciscan life centers beyond our walls to God and each other in the spirit of Jesus, Francis and Clare. Good Friday March 30, 2018 - 9:30 a.m.

Silent Walk for Peace

The walk begins with prayer in the west parking lot of St. Francis Center and then proceeds through Little Falls, stopping at various places for reflection and song. Following the cross is a graphic reminder of some of the ways Jesus still suffers today and the necessity to pray for all people. Indoor Stations of the Cross will follow at 11 a.m. in Sacred Heart Chapel. From all of us to all of you, our heartfelt appreciation Sister Cordy Korkowski, director of Donor Relations

What fun I had in preparing my article for this issue of Our Journey! I reviewed all the names of our donors from A-Z listed in last year’s spring issue. My heart was full of gratitude. Going through these names brought back warm memories of conversations, visits, phone calls and financial gifts to the Franciscan Sisters. Seeing the names once more, I was able to be grateful again for all of those generous people who supported the Franciscan Sisters in 2017, some who have been with us since the opening of our Development Office in 1988. It’s true: donor loyalty goes back decades. My work is truly relational, and what a joy to hear, “Our business is going well. We want to have the Franciscan Sisters as recipients because we believe in what you are doing.” Another donor stated, “I don’t have a lot to give, but I want to be a part of the Franciscan Sisters.” We are honored by the heartfelt spirit of every gift—small and large. Over the past year, your donations have benefitted our ministries here in Little Falls—St. Francis Music Center, St. Francis Health and Wellness and our Franciscan Life Center. In addition, our mission work in Mexico and our outreach efforts in the United States are strengthened by your support. Our retired sisters living in Clare Residence and Angela Community appreciate your love and your support as well. Wherever our sisters live and work, your generous donations assist them. Each day, we give thanks for wonderful, generous donors who partner with us as we live the Gospel joyfully with energy, spirit and peace. Thank you!

2018 Spring Our Journey

The inspiration for this icon is in the marvelous meeting of Mary and Elizabeth as told in the Gospel of Saint Luke. Elizabeth’s salutation to Mary resounds through the centuries! “Of all women, you are most blessed . . . Why should I be honored by a visit by the mother of our Lord?” And Mary’s response, “My soul glows with the glory of God,” is made for all humanity as it opens to know and taste the Divine Life. In my own life experience, I have known the power of “the visit” and the way the spirit leaps from heart to heart in face-to-face encounters. In 1984, as I prepared for a peacemaking pilgrimage to the Soviet Union with the National Council of Churches, the image of The Visitation came to me repeatedly, and contained the simple and profound meaning of the pilgrimage I was about to make. Christians from both sides of the Iron Curtain met face to face to express the unity they knew in Christ. I knew that communication through words would be a barrier so I painted this icon, a language I knew the Russians would understand. I carried it as a symbolic gift which I was able to present to two young Orthodox sisters from the monastery at Kiev who were students in Leningrad and part of the choir which sang a marvelous “Magnificat” for us. My gift of “The Visit” was visual and theirs was in song—it was a moving exchange, a 20th century version of this ancient theme.

Desert life: strong beauty, harsh reality Deanna V. Boone

“I have a deep love for the desert. The stark contrast between the dry soil and the rich beauty speaks to the magnificence of creation.” —Sister Audrey Jean Loher, the last sister to serve in Arizona The Franciscan Sisters ministered in Arizona for 50 years. Those decades are best characterized by the scope and diversity of the ministries in which the sisters were involved. It all started in 1967 when Sister Joyce Brandl moved to Tucson in search of a climate more suitable to her arthritic condition. Soon, Sister Mary Zirbes attended the University of Arizona. Other sisters followed, including novices who were sent to increase their awareness of multicultural ministries as part of their formation. Eventually, sisters became involved in a great variety of ministries as they utilized their gifts and talents to fill unmet needs they encountered. They followed the example of Saint Francis who went to the people instead of waiting for people to come to him. Over the years, five sisters ministered to the Tohono O’odham, which means “desert people.” Others worked in religious education, social work, the Inner City Apostolate, a neighborhood drug center, nursing homes, pastoral care, schools teaching English as a second language, adult education, homeless shelters, retreat centers, home health care, low-income clinics and as physical therapists, dietitians, nurses and even a librarian. Sister Bernadine Schneider heard the

desert call her to a year of contemplation, giving credit to the holiness of the place. Sister Ange Mayers, who served in Arizona as a novice and then later during the years 1974-1985 and 1994-2010, prepared families for baptism and other sacraments. She provided pastoral care and lived among the people. Her gift was her presence. She said, “I experienced a mutual sharing of the faith. An example of inculturating the rituals and symbols of the local people with Catholic rituals and symbols. As missionaries, we see God in the people and walk with them so that, together, we grow into a deeper relationship with God and each other. Relationships invite and challenge us to relate to God in new ways.” Sister Ange explained, “I loved how my work flowed out of the movement of the Spirit. Desert life is a contrast between strong beauty and harsh reality. Only in God can we go on.” After more than 20 years of mission work in Peru, Venezuela and Guatemala, Sister Audrey Jean Loher felt called to share in the community life and ministry of the sisters in Arizona, particularly she desired to serve those coming across the border fleeing poverty, drug wars and persecution. For 12 years, she volunteered at Humane Borders, a faith-based organization that maintains water stations at strategic locations where migrants travel as they cross the Mexican/U.S. border into Arizona, and where Sister Elizabeth Ohmann was already involved. The primary purpose of this ministry is to save lives, as it is proven

that the majority of migrant deaths in that area is due to dehydration, hyperthermia and hypothermia. Sister Audrey Jean, along with other volunteers, served in a variety of duties: office work, hosting delegations to the border, caring for the water stations, housing migrants in emergency situations and promoting human rights on an international level, especially with Mexico. In 2015, Sister Audrey Jean began working with Casa Alitas, a nonprofit responding to the needs of a new surge of migrants, mainly women and children from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, who were fleeing extreme poverty and violence in their countries. “I was present to the refugees, no matter their situation,” she said. “These people left their homes and faced great danger on their journey toward a life filled with unknowns—through hope and faith in our shared God.” Sister Janet Kunkel is credited with the longest tenure—she ministered in Arizona from 1980-2013. Over the years, she served in various capacities within the Tucson Diocese, focusing on “boosting the inner life of the parish.” She worked with RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiative of Adults) where she ministered directly to people seeking entrance into the Catholic Church and a stronger faith life. She coordinated a large religious education program that provided faith formation for several hundred youth from different parishes. And she was involved in literacy as a remedial reading teacher. “I helped people become literate,” she recalls. Sister Janet remembers her years in Arizona fondly, “. . . there’s just something about the desert that can’t be duplicated.” “Sister Ange is a person with great faith, patience, confidence, flexibility, persistence and a sense of humor, [who] could persevere in a ministry characterized by solitude, long distances between meetings and seemingly slow results.” —Sister Carolyn Law

Sister Pat Forster’s book chronicles history, culture of Mexico mission "Sometimes one wonders how a successful ministry got started and why, by the grace of God, it flourished. This book is a recounting of the founding and growth of the missions of the Franciscan Sisters. The author does a fine job of giving inside views of the first fifteen years of the life of the mission and development of lay ministry." —Sister Rose Mae Rausch In 2003 Sisters Rose Mae Rausch, Colette Toenies, Janice Wiechman and Pat Forster began a mission in San Rafael, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. The objective was to provide spiritual and pastoral care and train lay leaders to carry out the work of the church in this widespread, rural parish. Opening Doors: Lay Ministry, written by Sister Pat Forster, illustrates the process of discovering and promoting lay leadership while hoping that all become active members of their own personal history and evangelization. The book details the Mexican culture in foods, hospitality, devotion and lay leadership among the youth and how the sisters addressed the critical need for education by providing housing, support and formation for teenage girls in the Casa Franciscana. More than 50 girls have graduated from the local high school and many have gone on to university. Generous donors have made these developments possible. In the book’s introduction, Sister Bea Eichten writes, “The Franciscan Sisters of Little Falls, Minnesota, have always had a heart for the poor and those who are underserved, ministering in many countries all over the world. In 2003, that ministry extended to Mexico. . . . Our Franciscan Missions continue to develop and to be a source for the development of lay leadership in the church

Sister Julien Dirkes and Carlos Ochoa

Carlos Ochoa receives Saint Francis Award

Each year, the highlight of the Employee Recognition Dinner at St. Francis Convent, Little Falls, is the presentation of the Saint Francis Award. The Franciscan Sisters’ Values Committee sponsors this annual award, given to an employee who lives and extends the values of Saint Francis and that of the Franciscan Sisters of Little Falls. Amy Scholl, Human Resources director, said, “Each year the employees and sisters nominate a person who manifests our Franciscan values—respect, open communication, hospitality and compassion—as they carry out their work with us.” Carlos Ochoa, who began working for the sisters in 2011, is the 2017 Saint Francis Award recipient. Those who nominated Carlos described him as a person of few words but who exemplifies humble, faithful service as he quietly goes about his duties in Nutrition Services, keenly alert to the sisters who need assistance. He is a conscientious, kind and helpful person with a ready smile, always making time for others. Congratulations, Carlos! Immersion experience In January the Franciscan Sisters’ Immigration Committee traveled to McAllen, Tex., to learn firsthand about immigration issues and the border wall. They were able to speak directly with Border Patrol agents and visited several agencies that support and advocate for immigrants, including the Catholic Charities Respite Center and Fuerza del Valle (Strength of the Valley). The organization ARISE (A Resource In Serving Equality), which is a coalition of women who advocate for personal and communal development, was their principle contact throughout their visit. Members of the committee stand by the Rio Grande River on the Texas border near McAllen with Mexico across the river. Mexico mission This year, 16 girls from the outlying areas live in community with Sister Janice Wiechman (standing in the back) and Sisters Ange Mayers and Mary Dumonceaux (seated in the middle) at Casa Franciscana while attending the local high school in San Rafael, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. Education is bread for the poor, and the opportunity to graduate from high school opens up new possibilities for a better life and future for these students and their families.

In loving memory Sister Alice Doll, 96 — Sister Alice Doll was raised near Perham on a farm which had

been handed down through three generations. Her parents, Peter and Anna (Delaney) Doll taught their eight children by word and example to pray and live a life of faith. On the day she graduated from high school, she knew she would become a Franciscan Sister. However, she delayed her entrance for two years in order to work and help support the family. She was accepted as a Franciscan Sister of Little Falls, Minnesota, on August 12, 1942. On entering the novitiate she received the name Sister Mary James. She made her final vows on August 12, 1947. She taught religion, science, Latin and art at St. Francis High School for 17 years, then left that position to serve in religious education and faith formation in the Diocese of St. Cloud. At that time, only 15 parishes had a religious education director. When she retired, 74 parishes had March 29, 1921 – developed religious education programs. She was widely recognized for her accomplishments August 26, 2017 and was included in 12 different issues of Who’s Who in America. Throughout her life Sister Alice was a model of a dedicated religious woman and a competent and effective professional. Also an artist, Sister Alice saw her oil paintings as an expression of her contemplation. When the new St. Otto’s Care Center was built, she was commissioned to do 25 oil paintings, some of which were portraits of residents.

Sister Mary Matthias Gangl, 95 — Frances Elizabeth Gangl was raised in St. Paul,

Minn., the fifth of seven children of Frank and Catherine (Weyandt) Gangl. Frances attended St. Bernard’s Grade School and Washington High School. During her junior year she wanted to take accounting, but her homeroom teacher insisted that she take the commercial course since, in his opinion, accounting was a boy’s subject! However, in Frances’s senior year, she was able to take accounting, which proved very useful in her many years of hospital ministry. Frances had thoughts of entering St. Francis Convent as her three cousins (Sisters Karline, Thomas and Giles Weyandt) were members. However, she wondered how she would serve since she was neither a nurse nor a teacher. Sister Mary Eve Goering told her they always had a need for office personnel. That was all Frances needed to make her decision. She entered the convent March 2, 1922 – on January 19, 1947, and received the religious name of Sister Mary Matthias. She made first September 10, 2017 vows on August 12, 1949, and final vows on August 12, 1952. Sister Matthias ministered as an office manager and an accountant for more than 60 years. She served as mentor, counselor and lifelong friend for many of the staff at the various hospitals at which she worked. In 2001, she received the Francis Award from Unity Family Healthcare, recognizing her contribution in promoting the Franciscan values at St. Gabriel’s Hospital. 26

Sister Mary Dulski, 93 — Magdalene Dulski was born in Perham, the second of four

children of Stanley and Wanda (Rogalla) Dulski, and grew up in a faith-filled family where family prayer was very important. Education was an important part of Magdalene’s life, first as a student and later as a teacher. After high school, she earned her education certificate from Moorhead State University and taught for three years at Bejou. Before she entered the convent, Mary had come to know the Franciscan Sisters at St. James Hospital and also during summer catechetical classes taught by the Franciscan Sisters in her parish. She remembered especially Sisters Alicia Pischke, Augusta Schultheis and Jeanne Winter. Magdalene was received as a Franciscan Sister on July 31, 1950, and received the name Sister Mary Andrew; later she chose to be known as Sister Mary. March 15, 1924 – Sister Mary ministered as an elementary teacher, principal, remedial reading teacher, director September 17, 2017 of religious education. She served in St. Cloud, Fergus Falls, Flensburg, Morris, Little Falls, Waite Park, Princeton, Alexandria, Albertville and Hutchinson. Sister Mary was a quiet, gentle and considerate person who cherished privacy and solitude. She was a nature lover—sunsets, dew on the grass, flowers, storms, birds, trees, sky and snow—all had a way of drawing her closer to God who created it all.

Sister Helen (Mary William) Hassler, 83 — Sister Helen Hassler, the youngest of

five children of Eugene and Ina (Clark) Hassler, graduated in 1951 from Perham High School where she was involved in band, speech and 4-H work. After graduation, she began nurses’ training at St. Gabriel’s School of Nursing in Little Falls. Helen’s aunt, a Benedictine sister, influenced Helen toward religious life through the letters she wrote to the Hassler family. The Franciscan Sisters at St. James Hospital, Perham, and at St. Gabriel’s Hospital, Little Falls, also inspired her. She was accepted as a Franciscan Sister on January 6, 1952. On entering the novitiate, she was given the religious name Sister Mary William. She made her final vows on August 12, 1957. Later she returned to her baptismal name of Helen. She served as both staff nurse and supervisor in a number of hospitals in various parts of the December 26, 1933 country. Sister Helen loved learning and studied scripture and spirituality. A 30-day Ignatian October 21, 2017 retreat led her to pastoral ministry and spiritual direction. In all her ministries, respect for the human person was paramount. She herself said, “I hope the legacy I am leaving for future generations is respect for the human person.” Sister Helen was a deep and reverent thinker. On the occasion of her 60th Jubilee, she said, “Words are inadequate to express my gratitude to God and to all who made my life’s journey possible.”

Sister Mary Amy Schreiner, 97 — Mary Catherine Schreiner grew up in Detroit

Lakes. After grade school, she worked at her cousin’s home to earn money to attend St. Francis High School in Little Falls. She became acquainted with the Franciscan Sisters through her half-sister, Sister Cecilia. In fall 1941, Mary Catherine entered the novitiate and was given the religious name of Sister Mary Amy. She made her first profession of vows in 1943 and final profession in 1946. She earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from the College of St. Catherine and taught for almost 30 years in the St. Cloud Diocese and the Archdiocese of St. Paul/Minneapolis. After her years in elementary education, she ministered in religious education and as an associate chaplain. Later, she taught English as a second language and ministered to undocumented immigrants. August 16, 1920 During her years in Tucson, Ariz., she was active in various groups working for economic justice November 18, 2017 and civil rights for immigrants. Small in stature but big in achievements, Sister Amy’s energy level ran high and made it possible for her to move in various ministries wherever there was something to be achieved for the betterment of people. At her Golden Jubilee she wrote: “I give thanks to God for the marvelous ways in which God has led me by the Holy Spirit through faith-filled parents, wise teachers and loving sisters.” 2018 Spring Our Journey

Happy 100th birthday, Sister Marie Theis! Sister Rose Margaret Schneider What does the life of a 100-year-old Franciscan Sister hold? Here is just a glance into the life of Sister Marie Theis who celebrated her 100th birthday February 17, 2018. Sister Marie has spent 78 of those 100 years as a Franciscan Sister. Born and raised in Eden Valley, she has her parents Frank and Mary to thank for her deep spiritual life that has nourished her all these years. Her mother had cousins who were Franciscan Sisters so Marie experienced the life of a Franciscan through them. Her parents brought her to Little Falls on October 29, 1938. As her parents were leaving, her Dad, with a tear in his eye, said, “If this is not for you, let me know and I will come and pick you up.” Sisters Rose Margaret Schneider and Marie Theis He never had to make that trip. Her journey of 78 years holds so many varied and interesting ministries. She served as house parent at the St. Cloud Children’s Home and then moved to the quiet of the bishops’ house in St. Cloud to assist Sister Jeremiah Trutwin. At one point she continued her education at the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul receiving her BA in elementary education and taught for 20 years. I had the opportunity to be the principal at St. Andrews School in Elk River when Sister Marie taught there. Five of us, including Sister Marie, went on a camping adventure across the United States one summer, visiting national parks, relatives, Disney Land, etc. By the time the four of us had the tent up and ready for the night, Sister Marie, a fantastic cook, had our dinner ready, and it was delicious. She and I continue to reminisce about this trip. In later years she lived with some of our retired sisters and was their driver; she remembers those outings with gratefulness. For two years she cared for a woman with cancer. To this day she loves updating her family’s history, very aware of the power of faith. On her 75th Jubilee in 2014 Sister Marie wrote, “I am grateful to the Lord for the many gifts in my life journey. I have been blessed to have such support and opportunity through my religious community, family and friends.” May we all be as blessed as Sister Marie is to live such a full life for 100 years, listening to the Spirit. Happy Birthday, Sister Marie!
