Main Street Books has been a proud and local business for the past 14 years in downtown Hattiesburg. Main Street Books opened its doors in November 2002, originally at 205 Main Street, only to quickly outgrow that space and evolve into the unique treasure that is presently located at 210 Main Street in Historic Downtown Hattiesburg. Monday, December 5, Main Street Books will host their 13th annual Author Extravaganza from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. Authors from across the state and local areas will come to the store to sign their newest releases. Over 20 authors will be visiting the store on Monday for the special event. Some of these authors

include: Jim Dees, Al Povall, David Crews, David Sansing, Troy Gilbert, Matthew Mayfield and many more. Main Street Books is owned by Jerry and Diane Shepherd and this venture has been one of passion and love. This bookstore means everything to them and they are thankful to be able to share it with the rest of the Hattiesburg community. “Our hearts are so into this; we feel blessed to be part of such a unique community where friends, old and new, stop by just to say hello,” Diane said. This Author Extravaganza is happening just in time for the holidays and just in time for you to pick up a signed book as a special gift. With the vibrant revitalization of downtown Hattiesburg, an escape from the big city hustle and bustle can be found at Main Street Books. FINANCIAL FOCUS

How should you use retirement plan distributions By Scott Miller AAMS®

During your working years, you are (hopefully) putting money into your IRA and your 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan. But once you’ve retired, how can you maximize the benefits you get from these plans? First of all, you need to be aware of the rules governing withdrawals from your retirement plans. If you are older than 59½, you can withdraw money from your traditional IRA without paying penalties, though the withdrawals will typically be taxable. But once you reach 70½, you generally must start taking “required minimum distributions” (RMDs) from these accounts, with the annual amount determined by your age, the account balance and other factors. (The situation is different with a Roth IRA. If you are the original account holder, you are not required to withdraw funds from your Roth IRA at any age. You can choose to withdraw your contributions at any time, tax and penalty free. To withdraw your earnings tax and penalty free, you generally must have owned the account for at least five years and have reached age 59½.) So, assuming you do have a traditional IRA and a 401(k) or similar plan, what should you do with the RMDs? You’ll probably require at least some of these distributions for your living expenses, but if you don’t need it all, what should you do with the “excess”? Here’s one suggestion: As part of your overall retirement investment portfolio strategy, you can reinvest the money into these three “buckets”: • Near-term income bucket – For this bucket, you’re not concerned with high returns – you just want the money to be there when you need it for expenses and unexpected costs, such as a major car repair, a new furnace, and so on. It’s always a good idea to have an emergency fund containing three to six months’ worth of living expenses – and your short-term income bucket could be an ideal source to help build such a fund. • Medium-term income bucket – During retirement, you can probably never have too many sources of income, so you may want to fill a bucket with intermediate- and longterm bonds, which make regular interest payments. • Long-term income bucket — Even when you’re retired, you will need some growth potential in your portfolio to help keep you ahead of inflation in the long run. So this bucket should be filled, not surprisingly, with growthoriented investments. These investments can fluctuate in value, but as long as you don’t need to tap into them in a hurry, you may be able to avoid taking withdrawals when the price is down. In addition to this “bucket” approach, you do have other options for your RMDs. For example, you could give your grown children some financial assistance, possibly for help in funding their IRAs. Or, you could contribute to a collegesavings vehicle, such as a 529 plan, for your grandchildren. And you can always make charitable contributions, which allow you to support worthwhile organizations and, by doing so, earn some potential tax benefits. Clearly, you can do a lot with your RMDs. And you worked hard for them – so make sure they work just as hard for you. Scott Miller, AAMS®, is a financial adviser for Edward Jones, 6760 US Highway 98 West, 601.261.3747.

Night-time personnel is a little more available than day-time, but overall, the turnout for calls has been lacking and we simply just need more volunteers. Our current need for volunteers is EXTREME, especially during the day time.

Please Consider Volunteering Today!

12

Oftentimes, only a few firefighters will show up during the day due to work and school schedules. This makes performing the VFD duties incredibly difficult, time consuming and laborious. Some VFD departments are better equipped with personnel as compared to others, but all have common ground in that the need for more volunteers is DIRE!

“Globally, the demand for seafood is increasing while wild fish harvest is stagnant and is predicted to have reached maximum yield,” said Lucas. “Aquaculture production is not only necessary to meet the current seafood demand, it offers growth potential, helps address food security and creates jobs.” Graham applauds Lucas’ background in aquaculture, noting she worked intimately with MDMR’s Lyman Fish Hatchery and her recent interests in expanded oyster aquaculture opportunities along the Gulf Coast. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the United States seafood consumption is 90 percent imports with half being aquaculture product, leading to a seafood trade deficit over $11 billion annually. Lucas said aquaculture can restore, enhance and alleviate pressure on wild stocks, in addition to supporting the global demand for seafood through commercial development. “The research occurring at USM’s Thad Cochran Marine Aquaculture Center is important to expanding environmentally safe and sustainable aquaculture production in the United States,” she said. “It will take academia working with industry, state and federal partners to advance research and enhance investment in aquaculture.” Lucas officially took over the position Nov. 30. She will also serve on the SOST Leadership Team. “I look forward to having open discussions with faculty, staff, state and federal partners; industry; and the public regarding the science and service we can provide to advance aquaculture,” she said.

William Carey University named to Victory Media’s 2017 Military Friendly® Schools list Submitted William Carey University announced today that it has earned the 2017 Military Friendly® School designation by Victory Media, publisher of G.I. Jobs®, STEM JobsSM, Military Spouse. First published in 2009, Military Friendly® Schools is the most comprehensive, powerful resource for veterans today. Each year, the list of Military Friendly® Schools is provided to service members and their families, helping them select the best college, university, or trade school to receive the education and training needed to pursue a civilian career. Institutions earning the Military Friendly® School designation were evaluated using both public data sources and responses from Victory Media’s proprietary survey. More than 1,600 schools participated in the 2017 survey; 1,160 were awarded with the designation. Ratings methodology, criteria, and weightings were determined by Victory Media with input from the Military Friendly® Advisory Council of independent leaders in the higher education and military recruitment community. Final ratings were determined by combining the institution’s survey scores with the assessment of the institution’s ability to meet thresholds for student retention, graduation, job placement, loan repayment, persistence (degree advancement or transfer) and loan default rates for all students

and, specifically, for student veterans. “William Carey University has consistently received the “Military Friendly® School” recognition for eight consecutive years,” said WCU President Tommy King. “Reaching the ‘top schools’ designation attests to our efforts to provide an educational opportunity for members of the military. This is another way that we can show support for those who defend and protect us.” According to Daniel Nichols, a Navy Reserve veteran and chief product officer at Victory Media, “Our ability to apply a clear, consistent standard to the majority of colleges gives veterans a comprehensive view of which schools are striving to provide the best opportunities and conditions for our nation’s student veterans. Military Friendly® helps military families make the best use of the Post-9/11 GI Bill and other federal benefits while allowing us to further our goal of assisting them in finding success in their chosen career fields.” For more information about William Carey University’s commitment to attracting and supporting military students, visit wmcarey.edu. William Carey University will be showcased along with other 2017 Military Friendly® Schools in the annual Guide to Military Friendly® Schools, special education issues of G.I. Jobs® and Military Spouse Magazine, and on militaryfriendly.com.

Sideline View: Dave “Boo” Ferriss: A special coach and man By Dale McKee Dave “Boo” Ferriss was truly a great person. I have never heard anyone speak ill of the former Delta State baseball coach. “Boo” Ferriss passed away on Thanksgiving Day, and for this state we lost an ambassador who represented us in a positive way. Known in all the baseball circles, Ferriss coached baseball at Delta State University for 26 seasons, and his widespread influence on the game of base-

ball will never be matched from Mississippi to Boston. His behavior on and off the field was on a level that very few will ever achieve. I can say that he was a great gentleman and very few have graced the baseball diamond as he did. The state of Mississippi was blessed to have this man for so many years, and we will sorely miss him. The Shaw native played in the majors for the Boston Red Sox 1945-50 and was named an All-Star. He pitched a shutout against the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 3 See MCKEE, page 12

of the 1946 World Series. He was also the pitching coach for the Red Sox from 195559 and was elected to the Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2002. Laurel native Tim Harvey played for Ferris in the late ‘70s. “I will miss Coach. Mississippi lost one of its finest treasures with the passing of Coach…. But as great as he was on the field, he was even a better man. Coach Ferriss was a devout Christian and family man who genuinely cared about people and their well-being. Coach had the ability to make everyone he met feel special. To have known him was to love him. I will forever be grateful for the blessing of playing for Coach Ferriss and benefiting from his warm friendship over the past 40 years.” “He was a great coach but even a greater person, “ said former West Jones standout Cotton Moore, who played for Ferriss. “He did not forget anything. He kept in touch and really cared about us,” stated Moore. Former Northeast Jones star player Ronald Davis said, “It was an honor to play for him. He was a legendary coach and man; he cared about you. He loved his players during and after their playing years.” Waynesboro native Dale Bowen played for Coach and still cherishes his two years playing for him. “He was a great coach and even a greater person. You really didn’t know it at the time, but he was teaching life lessons. He kept in touch over the years. He would send me hand written letters asking about the family and to see how we were doing. I still have a couple as keepsakes,” said Bowen. Laurel’s Jeff Moss played for Coach. “You look back as a young college player and his message was get your education. His message back then was just as important as it is today. He kept in touch over the years, and that was special. He had connections everywhere. I have been out of state and people will bring up his name,” stated Moss.

Another Laurel native, Dale Davis, says Coach was a special man. “I lost my dad the first week I was in college. It was a nightmare, but Coach kept me on the right path. Coach filled my parental shoes, and my teammates are still my brothers today. I loved my coach. He taught us how to be professional, and he helped create successful people,” stated Davis. Bob Billingsley, a Picayune native who works for Sanderson Farms in Laurel, has great memories of Coach Ferriss. “Coach was gifted in so many ways. His own athletic accomplishments and mentoring young men were gifts. His other gift, to me, was so much more, in that he took the time to show us after we left Delta State that he cared by reaching out to us and keeping in touch.” Former DSU and Ole Miss Sports Information Director Langston Rogers is forever grateful for his time with Coach. “We thank God for bringing him into our lives. He opened so many doors to provide his players the opportunity to succeed in their chosen profession, and we enjoyed a special bond with him that was much like a father-son relationship.” Biloxi’s Barry Lyons, like Harvey, was an All-American for DSU in the late ‘70s. Lyons later played for the 1986 World Champion New York Mets. “He was an amazing man,” Lyons said, “as good as it gets. He was a gentleman in the truest sense of the word. A coach, mentor, and inspiration to us all.” Ferriss’s time here on earth will be well documented on the playing field. His greatest gift, however, to his many former players and friends will be his influence. His ability to connect was his gift to all of us. His legacy will live through Boo’s boys and those he touched. Contact Dale at ddmckee18@yahoo. com
