Matthew 25:35-45 NLT 35 For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. 36 I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.’ 37 “Then these righteous ones will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing? 39 When did we ever see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ 40 “And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!’ 41 “Then the King will turn to those on the left and say, ‘Away with you, you cursed ones, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his demons. 42 For I was hungry, and you didn’t feed me. I was thirsty, and you didn’t give me a drink. 43 I was a stranger, and you didn’t invite me into your home. I was naked, and you didn’t give me clothing. I was sick and in prison, and you didn’t visit me.’ 44 “Then they will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and not help you?’ 45 “And he will answer, ‘I tell you the truth, when you refused to help the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were refusing to help me.’

Every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

WHAT IS THE FUMC FOOD PANTRY??

The objective of the FUMC Food Pantry is to provide enough food for several days to those in need. This year, through May, our volunteers distributed 11,000 pounds of groceries providing some 740 bags of food for 1,527 people.

The FUMC Outreach Food Pantry operates Monday through Friday from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in Room 110, immediately behind the Charlotte Street reception desk. There are presently 23 FUMC dedicated volunteers who administer the pantry to those in need.

The FUMC Food Pantry is the only one of several in the area that operates Monday through Friday throughout the year, except for holidays. It has been in operation for 25 years and has a certificate to that effect from the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank, a United Way agency.

People requesting food assistance normally are from Fredericksburg and surrounding counties including Caroline and Fauquier. Clients include young families as well as senior citizens and all are most appreciative of the groceries. FUMC Webpage

Lord, When did we see You? I was a stranger and…. Pastoral Care 

Fredericksburg UMC is a caring community of people who love God and all those made in God’s image. We embrace those who are hurting, and we walk with those who are in crisis as well as those who simply need a friend. We don’t have all the answers, and we don’t have it all together, but we attempt to live and love like Jesus. Like Jesus we recognize that we are all lost until someone finds us and calls us by name.

Life and its stress tends to make us forget that we are children of God, and that we are lovely and loved. When you’re struggling to make it through the day; you’re overcome by shame; you’re tired of putting on a face and faking it; when you haven’t laughed in far too long and you can’t keep going, please reach out. Our team of caring individuals is here to remind you that you are precious and beloved – that your name is written on the palm of the Creator of the Universe.

Walking alongside you through your pain – in whatever form it takes – is our honor and privilege. Pastoral care is about sharing life together and growing through the experience. Fredericksburg UMC seeks to show the love of Jesus Christ through spiritual, emotional and physical support.

The one wrestling with an overburdened underbalanced life load

The one in pain – physical, spiritual or emotional - the exploited and confused

The one who is lonely and without a support network, the forgotten

The grieving, the confused

The one whose family has fallen apart

Homework Helpers

We invite you to join us to share your gifts and talents as we kick off this special initiative. Many children in our city are struggling in school and desperately need our help with homework. Many children do not speak English at home nor do their parents and many are falling behind. A small gift of an hour a week or several times a month can make a huge difference in their success in school and possibly in life. As you can see by the description that follows the need is great and there are many opportunities and days to serve for 1 hour or more a week. Please take a moment to pray and consider a commitment to transform a life and it may be your own.

Skills needed: A loving and patient heart, no particular teaching ability is required. Think of it as helping your 1st or 2nd grade child or grandchild with their home work worksheets. Anyone who enjoys youngsters is sufficiently qualified. A staff teacher/coordinator will always be present.

What to bring: Your FUMC provided Homework Helpers name tag and a loving heart. All Volunteers must also complete a HMES Volunteer form, prior to volunteering.

When/Where: February 2 – May 24 on Tuesdays & Wednesdays, 3:15 – 4:30 p.m. / Hugh Mercer Elementary School at 2100 Cowan Boulevard. FUMC Webpage

Lord, When did we see You? I was naked and…. School Dressing Days: School Dressing Days is a community event for children needing some help getting ready for the new school year. It is sponsored by the Interfaith Community Council, of which FUMC is a member. Place donations in the SDD bin in Mission Control. Requested items: New or gently used backpacks (colorful ones for the smaller children and large ones for high-schoolers are usually in short supply); School-appropriate shoes (new or gently used); New girls' jeans sizes 5 and 7; Little girls' undies sizes 4 and 8. Other items are shown on the flyer in Mission Control. Financial contributions may be made to help our "super shoppers" pay for the bargains they find. Make out the check to FUMC with School Dressing Days in the memo line.

Fredericksburg United Methodist Church has a wide range of community outreach, but lets go for a walk around the community

Two blocks from FUMC is Doris Buffet’s House

1.5 million dollars “In May 2008, RACSB announced plans for The Sunshine Lady House for Mental Health Wellness & Recovery, a proposed 12-bed community-based residential facility, funded by a $2 million grant from Doris Buffett’s Sunshine Lady Foundation. The new 5,900-square-foot residential facility is located at 615 and 617 Wolfe Street in Fredericksburg. The donation will also be used to renovate the existing building currently owned by RACSB at 818 Lafayette Boulevard for use as an eight-bed long-term boarding house for adults with serious mental illness.” “Recently, I learned that Planning District 16, with a population of over 300,000, has only 34 beds available for the care of people with mental illness. It is obvious that this is a woefully inadequate response to their plight.” - Doris Buffett http://www.racsb.state.va.us/sunshine.html

Doris Buffet’s Generosity has been felt through much of Fredericksburg 

Through the Sunshine Lady foundation, Doris Buffett has generously donated

over $150 million of her own money, and is primarily focused on setting up the larger programs, including a scholarship program for victims of domestic violence, educating prisoners in college and helping those suffering mental illness. 

Mrs. Buffett offered the city $2.5 million for a new Boys & Girls Club to be built at the Dixon Street Recreational Complex.

She also paid for a new gymnasium and wellness center at the Bragg Hill Family Life Center which helps at-risk children and families.

Lord, When did we see You? A short walk from FUMC and you arrive at the door of the Micah Hospitality Center Mission statement: do justice, to love kindness and to walk humbly with God (Micah 6:8) Micah is a Christ-centered community supporting people experiencing chronic homelessness and identifying pathways to sustainable housing. VISION To end homelessness in the Fredericksburg region.

http://www.micahfredericksburg.org/about-us/

Micah Ecumenical Ministries is the cornerstone of help with basic needs for the homeless in the Fredericksburg area. The ministry connects those in need to community resources, including mental health outreach, disability application assistance, post-hospital respite care, educational advancement, housing placement, supportive employment, and the re-creation of support systems.

One worker stated, there is no reason that anyone should go hungry in Fredericksburg.

The door to the Micah Hospitality Center

Beyond the Train Station is Government Subsidized housing. Among the Community Board Announcements were flyers on applying for for assistance, Summer camp for children, a Fun night with food, give a ways and fun, and an informational seminar on Lupus. African-American women are three times more likely to get lupus than white women. Lupus is also more common in Latina, Asian, and Native American women.*

“The tanker cars—which can contain materials such as liquefied petroleum gas, ethanol and chlorine—have been parking on CSX’s tracks near Fredericksburg’s Mayfield neighborhood for years. After years of requests, tanker cars filled with hazardous chemicals that sit near Fredericksburg-area residential areas may soon be parked somewhere else. A 4.5-mile radius would be affected. That includes Spotsylvania on one side and Stafford and Ferry Farm on other side. This is something that could wipe out half the city by breathing in the fumes. The public has to be aware, “The question I have is, does this community have a concept of environmental racism?” Jesse Jackson”

The mission of Project Lifesaver is to provide timely response to save lives and reduce potential injury for adults and children who wander due to Alzheimer’s, autism, and other related conditions or disorders. The Fredericksburg Police Department works hand in hand with Project Lifesaver to locate wandering patients before they fall victim to the elements or accidents. Clients enrolled in Project Lifesaver wear a small personal transmitter around the wrist or ankle that emits an individual tracking signal. If a client goes missing, the caregiver notifies the Police Department and a trained emergency team responds. Most who wander are found within a few miles of home, and search times have been reduced from hours or days to minutes utilizing Project Lifesaver technology. Recovery times for Project Lifesaver clients average 30 minutes – 95% less time than traditional search methods. Project Lifesaver offers a range of technology to suit the needs of clients. Some services may be covered by insurance, but the Police Department will not deny enrollment in Project Lifesaver based upon the client’s inability to pay.
