DID YOU KNOW?
According to the Celiac Disease Foundation, gluten is the general name for proteins found in wheat, rye, barley and triticale. That’s an important thing for party hosts to know, as many people now follow gluten-free diets. When planning party menus, hosts should ask guests if they adhere to gluten-free diets, as consuming gluten can trigger an abnormal immune system response in people who have Celiac disease, potentially causing damage to the small intestine. Wheat is commonly found in bread, baked goods, pasta, and cereals, among other foods. Barley is present in food coloring, soups, malt vinegar, and beer. Rye is found in rye bread, certain beers and cereals, while triticale may be present in certain breads, pastas and cereals. If guests have glu-

VETERANS DAY
Ways to remember and honor our veterans Metro
The men and women who defend the liberties and freedoms of the countries they represent hold a special place in people’s hearts and an eternal spot in their countries’ histories. Any opportunity is a good time to commemorate the bravery and selfless deeds of military personnel, but certain prominent holidays in November make this an especially important time to thank veterans for their service. November 11 is Veterans Day in the United States and Remembrance Day in Canada. It’s also known as Armistice Day in other parts of the world. These holidays honor all military veterans who have provided service
to their countries, and that each falls on Nov. 11 is no coincidence, as the day commemorates the anniversary of the end of World War I on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. Many places around the world pause and remember fallen veterans on Nov. 11, but a good majority of Veterans Day and Remembrance Day commemorative events focus on past and current veterans who are still alive. There are many ways to honor the military at home and abroad in time for the November festivities. The following are just a handful of ways to show appreciation for military men and women. • When dining out, ask your server if you can pay the tab for a soldier or vet-

of business each year to pay homage to servicemen and women. • Visit a military memorial in a city near you. Your town also may have its own memorial. • Petition town officials to erect a memorial if your town does not already have one. Such memorials can be a source of inspiration for your community. • Support a military family in your town who may
be missing a loved one stationed elsewhere. Make meals, mow the lawn, help with grocery shopping, or simply provide emotional support. • Volunteer time at a veterans’ hospital. You may be able to read with veterans or engage in other activities. • Get involved with a military support charity that can provide much-needed funds to struggling families or disabled veterans. • Have children speak with veterans in your family, including grandparents, uncles and aunts or even their own parents. It can help them gain perspective on the important roles the military plays. • Ask a veteran to give a commencement speech at a school or to be the guest of
honor at a special function. • Drive disabled veterans to doctors’ appointments or to run any errands. • Support a local VFW organization. • Create a scrapbook for a veteran in your life. • Cheer for or thank military personnel each time you see them. • Visit the veterans’ portion of a nearby cemetery and place poppies or other flowers on the graves. • Always keep the military on your mind and never forget those who have served and didn’t return home. Armistice Day, Remembrance Day and Veterans Day are great ways to honor past and current military for their service and sacrifice.

THANKING THE TROOPS
How to show appreciation for military personnel Metro
Military personnel are unsung heroes whose sacrifices for their country make it possible for hundreds of millions of people to enjoy freedoms that many people across the globe do not have. In recognition of those sacrifices, many people want to show their appreciation to both active and retired servicemen and women. Fortunately, there are many ways to do just that. • Pitch in at home. According to the United States Department of Defense, the United States military currently deploys active duty personnel in nearly 150 countries. Many of those troops are separated from their families for months at a time, and that separation can make things difficult for their loved ones back home. If a neighbor’s spouse is deployed overseas, offer to help
around the house. Whether it’s mowing their lawn, dropping their kids off at school or inviting the whole family over for dinner one night each week, such gestures can go a long way toward easing the burden faced by spouses of deployed military personnel. • Send gifts to active personnel. Servicemen and women on active duty do not enjoy many of the luxuries that tend to be taken for granted back home. But men and women who want to show their appreciation can send care packages to active personnel serving overseas. An organization such as Operation Gratitude (operationgratitude.com), which to date has sent nearly 1.3 million care packages to active personnel, sends care packages filled with snacks, entertainment, personal hygiene products and handmade items. This
provides active personnel a taste of home while also letting them know their extraordinary efforts are appreciated and not forgotten. • Volunteer at a veterans hospital. Unfortunately, many servicemen and women return home from their deployments with injuries or health conditions that require long-term care. By volunteering at veteran hospitals, men and women can help veterans overcome their injuries and provide much-needed help to staff at hospitals that could use a helping hand. Visit volunteer.va.gov for more information. • Make a financial donation. For those who want to support servicemen and women but don’t have much free time to do so, financial donations can go a long way toward improving the quality of life of active and retired military personnel. Many pro-
grams work with veterans to improve their quality of life, and such organizations rely heavily on financial donations to make their missions a reality. The Wounded Warrior Project (woundedwarriorproject.org), for example, works to honor and empower servicemen and women who incurred physical or mental injuries or illnesses on or after September 11, 2001. The organization relies on the generosity of individuals who want to help wounded military personnel overcome their injuries and illnesses. Based on audited financial statements of the 2014 fiscal ending on Sept. 30, 2014, 80.6 percent of total expenditures went to services and programs catering to wounded military personnel and their families, assuring prospective donors that their donations will go toward helping those in need.
There are many ways that civilians can express their gratitude to active and retired military personnel.

If the goal is to provide guests with an intimate setting to mingle, avoid large spaces. If you want guests to dance and plan to provide additional entertainment options, choose a venue that has a dance floor and a stage. Size is not the only thing to consider when choosing a venue. The location of a venue is important as well. The venue should be easily accessible to guests and convenient for guests traveling by car and public transportation. Have a contingency plan if the venue is outdoors and weather may interrupt the festivities. Remember, the venue is the foundation upon which the rest of the party will be situated, so take extra time to find the right party spot.

Make a checklist
Take some time to jot down a list of what will need to be done for the party. Relying on your memory alone is not sufficient, as you’re bound to forget some details as the party draws nearer. Purchase a planner to help you keep track of details and payment deadlines. Store receipts in your planner, and keep it with you at all times so you can jot down ideas as they come to you. Don’t just jot down the things to do. Assign specific deadlines to each task so you will stay on track. PARTY PLAN » PAGE 12

PET SALON
Busy? Grooming services come to you and your pets Part of being a pet parent involves keeping companion animals clean and healthy. Many people rely on the services of professional groomers to bathe their animals, trim their nails and give them haircuts when necessary. Grooming does more than just help a pet look his or her best; it actually can be beneficial for the pet’s health as well. For example, matted fur can tug on skin, cause discomfort and be a home for parasites, while long nails can make it difficult for pets to walk. Pet owners can find groomers in various ways. Private groomers usually have their own stand-alone shops, and many groomers are affiliated with veterinary hospitals or popular pet stores. All of these options share the same component: They require customers to come to them. However, mobile groomers provide the same level of service without asking pet owners to leave home. Mobile groomers offer all of the same services as traditional groomers but do so in a less traditional way. Mobile grooming vans and trucks boast all of the amenities of a brick and mortar grooming salon, but they are not anchored to any particular place. There are many
advantages to using a mobile pet groomer besides the convenience of not having to have a pet venture far from home. • Work around mobility issues. Aging dogs (or aging owners) may prefer mobile grooming services because the groomer comes to owners’ homes, saving owners the
trouble of lifting and maneuvering their pets in and out of their vehicles. Arthritic animals or those who cannot walk or get up easily can be moved out to the grooming van. • Better for skittish animals. Mobile groomers usually can only fit one animal at a time during a grooming
appointment. That means the pet will not have to be around other animals, creating a less stressful experience, particularly for nervous pets. • No need for cages. Because the animal being groomed is the only animal around, there’s no need for the animals to spend long wait times in cages. This also
PET FOOD
Savor the moment of mealtime with your pets Pets live in the moment, greeting every meal, every belly rub and every minute of playtime with unbridled excitement. Since your pet is always there to greet you with that loving enthusiasm when you come home, we think it’s time to return the favor. Pets look forward to mealtime. And, when you feed your pet a premium, optimally nutri-
tious food, they feel great, but you feel even better. Here are three tips to make sure that you’re feeding them the best quality so you can savor the moment of mealtime together: • Give your pet the best. Look for a pet food that provides the highest quality, healthiest, most flavorful and least-processed ingredients available.
• Look for the little extras. A high quality pet food will provide important extras such as pre- and probiotics, digestive enzymes and antioxidant rich fruits and vegetables. Premium pet food companies like Petcurean list their ingredients and provide an online guide about what is found in their food at petcurean.com. • Appreciate your pet’s
mealtime. Life is busy, so why not make your pet’s mealtime an opportunity to enjoy, relax and spend some time together? Pets seem to have it all figured out and can certainly teach us a thing or two about living in the moment. And, did you know that pet ownership can also help decrease our blood pressure and cholesterol levels?
eliminates the need to have a pet sit inside of a cage to dry. • Faster grooming time. Some groomers require their customers drop pets off in the early morning and then pick them up later in the day. The dog or cat may spend several hours waiting to be groomed. But appointments with a mobile groomers begin the mo-
ment the groomer arrives. In addition, little to no interruptions help appointments move along more quickly. • Pets earn specialized attention. When working with mobile pet groomers, customers know exactly who will be working on their pets, which is not necessarily the case at larger grooming salons. This means they can directly discuss any concerns, health needs of the animal, cut length, and anything else that pertains to the grooming. • Pet owners are close by. Should the groomer need owner assistance, or if the pet needs some reassurance, having the grooming van parked outdoors makes it easy for pet owners to lend a hand. • Cleaner cars afterward. Pet owners that do not have to transport pets to and from their grooming appointments eliminate the accumulation of pet hair and/or dirt in their cars. And animals that suffer from motion sickness won’t have to endure another uncomfortable ride to the groomer’s office. Mobile pet grooming is beneficial to pet parents for a variety of reasons, but such professionals can also make grooming more enjoyable for pets.

Things to consider before buying an investment property Metro
Real estate can be an incredibly fruitful investment. Buying a property at the right time can provide investors with a substantial return when they decide to sell, and that opportunity compels many men and women to consider investing in real estate. While there’s no denying real estate can yield a great return on buyers’ initial investments, there’s more to making money in real es-

HOME MAINTENANCE
5 signs your roof might be wearing down Replacing a roof is a costly venture few homeowners look forward to. According to Remodeling magazine’s 2010-11 “Cost vs. Value” report, the national average cost of a roof replacement is nearly $22,000, a costly endeavor considering the tenuous nature of the economy. What’s more, homeowners who choose more upscale roofing materials can expect to spend almost $40,000 on their roofs. Such costs make it no small wonder that many homeow ners fear the dreaded diagnosis that their home needs a new roof. While there’s little homeowners can do to reduce the cost of a roof replacement, there are warning signs homeowners can look for that might indicate a roof replacement is on the horizon. Recognition of these signs can help homeowners be more financially prepared should the day come when the roof needs to be replaced.
1. The presence of algae If the roof has lots of dark streaks and stains
SHARON $274,000
clinging to it, that is likely algae, which can grow on the roof for quite awhile. Algae does not necessarily do any damage to a roof, but it does do some damage to a home’s physical appearance, as algae on the roof is not very pleasing to the eye. Algae is most often found on the roofs of homes located in climates that have warm, humid summers. If algae is a problem on your roof, spray washing with a mixture of water and bleach can effectively remove it.
2. Buckling shingles
Like algae, buckling shingles are another unsightly problem on a roof. But buckling shingles are more than just an eyesore, they actually might indicate significant problems. When shingles buckle, that’s typically because hot air from the attic is forcing the shingles away from the home. Buckling shingles also indicate that the roof is poorly ventilated, which can take years off the roof’s life expectancy while driving up home cooling costs along the way.
cally a byproduct of normal shingle wear and tear that results from inclement weather, such as hail. Older roofs might experience granule loss, but granule loss can also occur on a new roof if a defective roofing product was used. Any granule loss, even if slight, should be addressed, as the side effects of granule loss include a weakened roof and leaking. If granule loss is not addressed, the consequences could be severe the next time a storm occurs.
4. Mold Unlike the warning signs already discussed, mold is not visible on the outside of the home. Instead, homeowners should look in the attic of a home to see if there is any mold growth. If there is, the roof is likely leaking, and the health risks of mold growth in a home are substantial. Mold is not necessarily easy to detect, so a professional inspection might be in order if mold growth is suspected. If a professional
determines mold is, in fact, present, then the mold will need to be removed and all options, including a roof replacement, must be considered to keep mold from coming back.
5. Roof rot
Perhaps the most discouraging sign a homeowner can see on his or her roof is roof rot. Roof rot appears when a roof is in considerable decay and, if not addressed, its consequences can stretch far beyond the roof, damag-

ing other parts of the home thanks in large part to water getting through the roof. If roof rot is either not noticed or just ignored, it won’t take long for water to get through the roof and blaze a destructive path through the rest of the home. Homeowners might fear a full roof replacement because of the cost associated with such a project. But if ignored, problems with a roof could eventually prove far more costly than the price of replacing the roof.

DECORATING
These five easy home décor projects can brighten your fall StatePoint
As you shift from outdoor barbecues to indoor feasts and gatherings, make sure your home is in tip-top shape with these five simple updates.
1. Picture-perfect gallery wall Show love to your favorite seasons by showcasing them on a featured gallery wall, which is a top design trend in 2015: • Gather a series of picture frames. Use ones that vary in size to create an eclectic look. • Using burlap, white paper, newspaper, or even pages from an old wallpaper book, place the material on the frame’s backing to create a unique backdrop. • Next, customize the gallery for fall by placing real or faux foliage in the frames. Since the frames are already hung, you can easily swap out décor for different seasons.
2. Painted accent wall
Take your living area from lifeless to lovely with a pop of color. Paint an accent wall in a deep, rich hue to set the autumn scene in your home. Darker paint colors tend show more imperfections, so ensure a flawless finish by using painter’s tape to achieve sharp paint lines on trim, baseboards, crown molding and around doors and windows. You can prevent paint bleed with FrogTape brand painter’s tape, which is treated with patented PaintBlock Technology to leave you with a top-notch paint job.
Make sure your home is in tiptop shape with these five simple updates.
4. Keep cocoa warm with DIY chalkboard mugs Serve guests in style with customizable chalkboard mugs — here’s how: • Tape around the top of a porcelain mug and handle, creating a straight line to paint beneath, using painter’s tape, such as FrogTape. Paint the taped-off area with porcelain chalkboard paint. Remove the tape when you finish painting and allow the mug to dry for 24 hours. • Bake your mug according to your paint’s directions. Allow it to cool. The paint will be as permanent as baked enamel — and dishwasher and microwave safe. • Personalize the mug with festive phrases for visitors.
5. Personalize pumpkins with paint
Easily amplify your pumpkins with glam — here’s how: • Buy a few different shaped gourds and pumpkins from your local farmer’s market or grocery store. • Spray paint them with a metallic finish, white, lacquer or a textured paint. • Protect areas you don’t want painted (like the stems) with painter’s tape. You can also use the tape to 3. Curb appetites in create designs on the pumpstyle with an edible kins prior to painting. For more home décor incenterpiece spiration, visit frogtape.com. ENTRYWAYS
Greet guests with a touch of glass The trend of using decorative glass to create dramatic entryways continues to grow as homeowners choose to stay in their homes longer and remodel for extended personal enjoyment. Adding a “touch of glass” with a new front entry door can be one of the most effective and economical ways to enhance a home’s curb appeal. Beyond aesthetics, a new entry with decorative glass can add value to the home. According to a national home valuation study conducted by Therma-Tru and TNS, an independent research organization, simply installing a new entryway door has been shown to increase the perceived value of a home by more than $24,000 on average. How to conduct a test drive long enough for you to get a feel for the vehicle. It is important to take your time on a test drive and not feel rushed. There are also many other tips that can help you find the right buy. • Pick a time when you feel focused. Doing a test drive on your lunch hour or right before you’re expected at a meeting or carpool is not the ideal time to make an assessment of the vehicle. You certainly may feel rushed and distracted by the other tasks you have to accomplish. Rather, pick a time when you are well rested and well fed and able to concentrate on the job at hand. • Avoid distractions. Sometimes schedules conflict, and you may have to bring other people, including children, along on the test drive. However, when possible, only include those people who will be driving

This way you will be able to focus solely on the car and not worry about what the other passengers are doing as well. It is also perfectly acceptable to ask the salesperson to be quiet during the test drive and reserve explaining the features and attributes for before or after the drive. This way you can focus on the driving experience. • Research the vehicle. It helps to go into a test drive already knowing the majority of the specifications on the vehicle and what the car or truck is capable of doing. This way you’ll be able to tell if the sales informa-

When shopping for a new vehicle, some drivers know exactly which model of car they want to buy, while others are not so sure. Though price and features often carry the most weight when making a decision, a test drive can narrow down the prospects as well. It is easy to become awestruck by the look of a new car, and even easier to fall into the eager hands of a salesperson. It can be confusing when comparing the dozens of statistics and numbers associated with a car — from price to horsepower to gas usage ratios. One of the best ways to judge a car is to take it out for a test drive. There are many things that a test drive can tell you about a car or truck. A test drive shouldn’t be a quick jaunt around the block. It should include a thorough examination of the vehicle, and the drive should be

Salespeople also may recommend certain routes, but these could be tailored to get the best response out of the car. But if you’re familiar with the area take a test drive on your terms. Try different road surfaces and speeds. Also be sure to make turns to gauge the turning radius. This can be as simple as making some turns in a parking lot. • Change lanes. This will help you determine the comfort level of the vehicle and if it will fit your frame. You don’t want the car to be uncomfortable to drive. • Test the radio and the climate control. GIVING
Donate a vehicle to charity Metro
Charitable organizations accept all types of donations, from cash to appliances to clothes. Donating such items can put them into the hands of people who need them, and many charities sell noncash donations in an effort to fund their programs and other services. In order to facilitate the process of donating larger items, many charities will pick up any items donors cannot bring in on their own. Many organizations even advertise when a van or truck will be in given neighborhoods to collect items, making the donation process that much easier for donors. According to the organization DonationTown, which helps donors connect with charities that will accept their donations, charities such as the Salvation Army, Rescue Mission, Good Samaritan Ministries, Habitat for Humanity, and Hope Services accept household appliances. Other organizations, including Big Brothers Big Sisters and The Lupus Foundation, also solicit for non-monetary donations and will arrange for pickup. When donating a car, truck, motorcycle, or boat, donors may need to go to greater lengths than they would if they were donating clothes or other less significant items. Titles will need to be transferred over to the charity, and ideally the vehicle should be formally retitled in the charity’s name. Organizations like the American Cancer Society require that the title be sent to a processing center, and only upon receiving the title will the organization pick up the vehicle. Nonprofit organizations
typically produce donation receipts as confirmation of the pickup, and these receipts may include an approximation of the donated vehicle’s value. Keep these receipts so you can claim tax deductions when filing returns in April. It’s also a good idea to keep a detailed inventory of any items you donated. Include photos of the items and their respective values so you can back up your income tax return claims in the event of an audit. It is best to consult with your tax preparer and/ or the charity you’re working with to determine the value of donated items. Comply with the rules the charity sets forth regarding item pickup. Label boxes or bags accord-
ingly, and let the organization know if you’re donating any especially heavy items so they can arrange for enough staff members to pick the items up. These organizations often rely on volunteers to do pickups, so you want to make the process as easy as possible. Be sure to leave items outside your door by the specified pickup time. Many charitable groups accept donations of vehicles and large household items. Making such donations can be more complicated, but these items may go to needy individuals or be sold to fund other projects, making the process well worth any extra effort donors might have to put forth.
