Sentness 

Go over the rules of Group Discussion:  ● Use ‘I’ statements. These statements break denial structures.  ● No rescuing people as they are speaking. Do not finish someone’s  sentence if they start struggling to find words. Let them fully process  their thought; it might be the first time they are wrestling with  something  ● No side chatter.  ● Pray. Invite God to further His kingdom in your group. Ask for blind  spots to be revealed in your members’ lives. 

  Reading:   

After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them on ahead of him, two by two, into every town and place where he himself was about to go. ​2 ​And he said to them,

“The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. 3​ ​Go your way; behold, I am sending you out as lambs in the midst of wolves. 4​ ​Carry no moneybag, no knapsack, no sandals, and

greet no one on the road. 5​ ​Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace be to this house!’ ​6

And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest upon him. But if not, it will return to you. And remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they provide, for the laborer

deserves his wages. Do not go from house to house. ​8 ​Whenever you enter a town and they ​ receive you, eat what is set before you. 9​ Heal the sick in it and say to them, ‘The kingdom

of God has come near to you.’ 10 ​ ​But whenever you enter a town and they do not receive ​ you, go into its streets and say, 11 ​ ‘Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet we

wipe off against you. Nevertheless know this, that the kingdom of God has come near.’ 12 ​ ​I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town.

“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works done in you had

been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and

 

​ ashes. ​14 But it will be more bearable in the judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you. 15 ​ ​And

you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You shall be brought down to Hades.

“The one who hears you hears me, and the one who rejects you rejects me, and the one

who rejects me rejects him who sent me.” The seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in

​ your name!” 18 ​ And he said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 ​ ​Behold, I

have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the

​ enemy, and nothing shall hurt you. 20 ​ Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are

subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”

In that same hour he rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of

heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and ​ revealed them to little children; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will.[​ b​ ]​ ​ 22 ​ All things

have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, or who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.” Then turning to the disciples he said privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you

​ see! 24 ​ For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, and did not

see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it. - Luke 10: 1-24

1. If the 72 represent the modern church, what has Christ sent  us to do?  2. What is the impact of speaking, and using words, in the  role of the 72 (and in turn, us as a church)? 

  Going Deeper 

As we continue through Luke, we want people to be able to voice their thoughts  and questions; however, we do not necessarily want to fill those with answers. 

As we walk through the book of Luke, we will be confronted with what we think  we already know about Jesus versus what the bible says about Jesus. We will be  confronted with whether we are worshiping the Jesus of the bible, or a Jesus  we have created in our head. Create an environment where people can just shout  out a thought they have. 

1. Read Luke 10:3  a. What do you think of when you imagine a sheep among  wolves?  2. How do you respond to conflict, fight or flight?   a. How can both be a negative?   3. Thinking back on your life, when have you played the role  of the “wolf” - knowingly or unknowingly?   a. Is there any relationship in your life right now where  you are exhibiting “wolf-like” behavior?   ​ ​Application  

Confession and repentance is the ongoing theme of the believer’s life. As God  reveals truth to us, we confess where we have sinned against Him, and change  our way. 

1. Brad gave two potential reasons why sentness is not being  lived out: 1) The idea that Jesus is great. I’m cool with  Jesus, but Christians should not try to get people to  believe what they believe, and 2) It isn’t that you don’t  believe, it’s that you have pronounced yourself or believed  that you are unqualified and/or unworthy. By way of  confession, which reason do you more identify with?   a. Do you identify with both?   b. How has this played out in your life? Give specific  examples.   2. By way of repentance, what does obedience to the mission of  sentness practically look like in your life?   3. In v. 20, Jesus tells the 72 that they should not rejoice  that the demons are subject to them (in Jesus’ name), but  only that their names are written in heaven.   a. By way of confession, what have you been rejoicing in?  Your performance, your achievements, your ministry?   b. By way of repentance, what does it look like to be in  obedience in your rejoicing? Give practical, real life  changes that you will make.   

Transparency & Vulnerability: If you haven’t done so already, split up the men and women in your group.  ● Ask if there is anything that needs to be dragged out and confessed  before the light of God. Darkness cannot live in the light. Read James  5:16.   ● Pray for each other; lay hands on and pray when needed.
