Luke - Guide
Luke Part 7 / Jesus, Tempted as We
Reading:
Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong 16 slavery. For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham. 17 Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. 18 For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted. 14
- Hebrews 2:14-18

Going Deeper
As we continue through Luke, we want people to be able to voice their thoughts and questions; however, we do not necessarily want to fill those with answers. As we walk through the book of Luke, we will be confronted with what we think we already know about Jesus versus what the bible says about Jesus. We will be confronted with whether we are worshiping the Jesus of the bible, or a Jesus we have created in our head. Create an environment where people can just shout out a thought they have.

The battle against temptation has been played out for thousands of years in Christian living. Often times, as believers, we can believe that utilizing bible verses to combat temptation is how we can find victory. However, we must come to understand and believe the truths of scripture on a deeper level instead of just using verses as an incantation against a deeply-rooted temptation. 1. How does knowing scripture help to fight temptation? a. Why could simply knowing verses not be enough to combat? b. Why would it still be important to continually learn and know more scripture?
c. Has there been a time in your life where you would think of, or use a verse that you might not have fully understood the meaning of into a setting to battle temptation and it wasn’t effective? d. How could you better understand or apply that verse in that context? 2. Jesus is better than anything this world can offer. As fallen people, we are also prone to wander from the God we love. What do you start functionally believing is better than Jesus? a. What are you pursuing in your life?
Transparency & Vulnerability: If you haven’t done so already, split up the men and women in your group. ● Ask if there is anything that needs to be dragged out and confessed before the light of God. Darkness cannot live in the light. ● Pray for each other; lay hands on and pray when needed.
