Luke - Guide

Luke Part 9 / “Truly, I say to you…”  Go over the rules of Group Discussion:  ● Use ‘I’ statements. These statements break denial structures.  ● No rescuing people as they are speaking. Do not finish someone’s  sentence if they start struggling to find words. Let them fully process  their thought; it might be the first time they are wrestling with  something  ● No side chatter.  ● Pray. Invite God to further His kingdom in your group. Ask for blind  spots to be revealed in your members’ lives.

And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and a report about him went out through all the surrounding country. 15 And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all. - Matthew 4:14-15

Getting Started  Read the above verses  1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

What was your understanding of Jesus before you personally knew Him?   What about Jesus is easy for you to share with non believers?   What about Jesus is hard for you to share with non believers?   Since becoming a believer, how has your understanding of Jesus changed?   Since becoming a believer, how have you changed?

  Going Deeper

As we continue through Luke, we want people to be able to voice their thoughts  and questions; however, we do not necessarily want to fill those with answers.  As we walk through the book of Luke, we will be confronted with what we think  we already know about Jesus versus what the bible says about Jesus. We will be  confronted with whether we are worshiping the Jesus of the bible, or a Jesus  we have created in our head. Create an environment where people can just shout  out a thought they have.

And he said, “Truly, I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown. 25 But in truth, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heavens were shut up three years and six months, and a great famine came over all the land, 26 and Elijah was sent to none of them but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. 27 And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.” 28 When they heard these 29 things, all in the synagogue were filled with wrath. And they rose up and drove him out of the town and brought him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they could throw him down the cliff. 30 But passing through their midst, he went away. 24

- Luke 4:24-30

Daniel talked about how Jesus’ teaching went against the Jews’  “ethnocentrism”, or the belief that ethnic Jews were the center of God’s favor  just because they were Jewish.    1. What are some popular narratives in today’s culture as to how you have  God’s favor?   2. Which of these narratives do you find yourself gravitating towards?  3. Is it possible to earn God’s favor?   4. What expectations do you have for God’s kingdom?  5. Why did God set Israel apart from the other nations?   6. Why are you set apart as a child of God?   7. Does your life attract non believers to the goodness of God?  8. Does your life show non believers that life is better with God, and  within His design for how to live life?    9. What does your life show?    Application

Daniel talked about how the Jews had a ranking system for people: Jews from  Judea, then Jews from Galilee, then Jews living elsewhere, then God Fearers  (non ethnic Jews that follow Judaism), and then after that there were the  outcast - sinners, pagans, and Samaritans. Jesus’ teaching went against that  narrative.     1. Who have you decided is in the “in crowd”?   2. Jesus came to set those in bondage free, do you think you are in  bondage?   3. Are you in an addiction?   4. When you believe you are on the “inside”, or in God’s favor, it is easy  to become judgemental or bitter.   a. Where are you being judgmental in your life?   b. Where have you developed bitterness in your life?   5. What is your “circle” of people that you do life with?

6. How diverse is your circle of people?   7. The Gospel has set us free to go to every circle of people with the love  of Christ, do you?   8. What fears do you have in going to others not in your circle?   9. What circles of people do you fear interacting with the most?  10.Why do you fear interacting with that circle of people?   11.What circle of people is God prompting you to interact with?   12.Read Revelation 7:9

  Transparency & Vulnerability:

If you haven’t done so already, split up the men and women in your group.  ● Ask if there is anything that needs to be dragged out and confessed  before the light of God. Darkness cannot live in the light.  ● Pray for each other; lay hands on and pray when needed.
