Luke - Guide  Luke Part 11 / “But God”  Go over the rules of Group Discussion:  ● Use ‘I’ statements. These statements break denial structures.  ● No rescuing people as they are speaking. Do not finish someone’s  sentence if they start struggling to find words. Let them fully process  their thought; it might be the first time they are wrestling with  something  ● No side chatter.  ● Pray. Invite God to further His kingdom in your group. Ask for blind  spots to be revealed in your members’ lives.

  Reading:

5 On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret, 2 and he saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. 3 Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon's, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat. 4 And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” 5 And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.” 6 And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish, and their nets were breaking. 7 They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. 8 But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” 9 For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish that they had taken, 10 and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” 11 And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him. - Luke 5:1-11

2 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— 3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. 4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace

you have been saved— 6 and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. - Ephesians 2:1-9

Getting Started  Read the above verses

1. 2. 3. 4.

Are you a person who takes initiative, or are you more passive?   When did someone take initiative in your life?   Did you appreciate it?   From this passage, what do we learn about Jesus?

  Going Deeper

As we continue through Luke, we want people to be able to voice their thoughts  and questions; however, we do not necessarily want to fill those with answers.  As we walk through the book of Luke, we will be confronted with what we think  we already know about Jesus versus what the bible says about Jesus. We will be  confronted with whether we are worshiping the Jesus of the bible, or a Jesus  we have created in our head. Create an environment where people can just shout  out a thought they have.  1. In Luke 5:4-10, Jesus revealed Himself to Peter as Lord. a. Has Jesus revealed Himself to you? b. Tell the group the events, emotions, everything surrounding when Jesus revealed himself to you. 2. Luke 5:8 records Peter’s response to Jesus. a. What was your response to when Jesus revealed Himself in your life? b. Since that time, has your life been any different? 3. Luke 5:10 records Jesus’ response to Peter - “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” a. What about Jesus causes you fear? b. What about being a Christian causes you fear? 4. Read Romans 8 a. Brad talked about how, “Your current season of life, will not separate you from the love of God.” b. What season of life are you currently in? i. What do you think about God’s love for you in this season, or is it hard to think about that?

 Application

1. Read Luke 5:1-11  2. Brad talked about how if Peter would have held on to his nets, and not  followed what Jesus said, then he never would have experienced Jesus; he  never would have the verse 8 moment.   a. What nets are you hanging on to in your life?   b. What has Jesus said for you to do, and you’re not doing it yet?   i. What is holding you back? - it is probably based in fear.   ii. Do you know what Jesus has said for you to do?   c. What does this say about what you actually believe - remember,  knowledge vs. belief. What we truly believe functionally changes  the way we live.

Transparency & Vulnerability:

If you haven’t done so already, split up the men and women in your group.  ● Ask if there is anything that needs to be dragged out and confessed  before the light of God. Darkness cannot live in the light.  ● Pray for each other; lay hands on and pray when needed.
