Pastor’s Column Dear Parish Family: St. Ignatius of Loyola urges those on retreat to begin by praying for the grace to see themselves as God sees them. If we have been taking Lent seriously, this is a grace for which we all yearn, but are often afraid to request. Blindness (indeed all illness) in ancient times was associated with personal sin. Sight is another word for grace, divine life. That man is all of us in as much as we are born into a disordered world. Two great manifestations of that tendency to be selfish (which we call original sin) are the capital sins of pride and envy. Pride emerges when we think that we are really the ones in control. Envy appears when we compare ourselves to others and think that in some way we have been cheated. We fail to appreciate that our “disability” is really a “different ability.” The light, who is Christ, makes me more aware of the disordered world in which I live and the ways in which I choose to participate in that world. When I am truly enveloped by and bathed in the light, am I not profoundly aware of the humbling truth that I am loved? Notice how Jesus brought the man born blind to the light. His spit mixed with the earth to form mud. St. Augustine described this as divinity mixing with humanity to form a healing salve. Isn’t this what happens in every sacrament of the Church? Matter and form come together to effect real concrete grace! The man was told to wash in the pool of Siloam (which means sent). John’s gospel described Jesus as the One Sent. The pool of the One Sent is, of course, the baptismal font! Conversion, however, changes the balance within families and in society. The status quo gets upset. Many resent the ripple effect of a person’s new found faith. This man was no exception. He was excluded from the synagogue; thus, he (and the early Christian community he represented) would be subject to the persecution of Rome from which Jews had been exempted. When asked if he was truly the one who had been healed, the man responded “I am.” These are the very words used by God in the presence of Moses at the burning bush to define his identity and by Jesus throughout John’s gospel to describe his. By implication, the man of faith, the follower of Jesus, is truly another Christ. The ancient hymn calls us to come to the light without fear: “Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light.” Ephesians 5:14 Yours in Christ, Father Bill Foley

Lenten Activities This Week The Light Is On For You – This lenten season, each Catholic parish in the Archdiocese of Washington and the Diocese of Arlington will have confessions available every Wednesday evening. If you have been reluctant to come to the sacrament, have been away for some time or just found it difficult to get to a confession time, this is a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with Christ and His Church. HIGH SCHOOL High School Service Trip to NYC, June 25–29 Teens age 14 to 18 (at the time of the trip) are invited to apply for this summer’s high school service week! Joined by teens from Our Lady of Mercy and Little Flower parishes, we will go to New York to work with organizations including the Sisters of Charity (Mother Teresa’s order), the CFR Franciscans, Cabrini Immigrant Services, and more. The High School SOR class is now meeting on Sunday mornings, 8:45-10 a.m. in the Blessed Sacrament School. Check in at the front desk, the class is accepting new students on a regular basis! MIDDLE SCHOOL Faith & Service nights take place on the first Friday of every month. Meet at the 5:30 Mass, followed in the Auditorium 6pm8pm. All middle school students are welcome! Adult and high school volunteers are always needed to help out.

Fourth Sunday of Lent Blessed Sacrament Facilities Update Parish Projects: Church Roof – About 20% of the tower work is complete and most of the lower level areas around the church are complete. While progressing well, the completion time will be a function of the weather. The final level of scaffolding has been installed due to the size of the cross on top and will coincide with the refurbishment of the cross. The construction areas and grounds around the fencing remain off limits to pedestrians for safety reasons. Sidewalk areas may be temporarily blocked periodically for safety reasons, but all church entrances should remain open. Also, for safety reasons, all work areas, especially inside the fencing, is off limits to everyone except contractors. Donations for the roof are continuing to come in and we now have received $136,332 and have $40,000 pledged towards our $350,000 goal for our roof project which leaves a balance of $173,668. Thank so much for your generosity! Please note that this project will be completed in two phases. The first is the major portion which includes all of the roof areas. The second is to refurbish the exterior wall areas which is the smaller portion of the project. Our goal of $350k will allow us to complete both of these phases at the same time at a reduced cost. School Projects: Outdoor Classroom – The major portion of the outdoor classroom is complete and should be substantially completed when the weather breaks. If you have any additional questions about these projects, please contact [email protected] Faith Formation Transitions After consultation with staff and commission members, we have decided to increase the staff members who direct our catechetical ministries. Our current DRE, Ms. Michelle Balch, will focus on adult faith formation; and we are actively seeking a DRE to fill her shoes in directing the School of Religion for Grades k through 8. We are blessed to have Mrs. Casey Esser as our Youth Minister and Coordinator for Confirmation Prep and Mrs. Rosalie Days who coordinates preparation for First Reconciliation and First Communion. The ideal candidate for the DRE position would hold a master’s degree in religious education or theology and have a minimum of five years of experience in catechetical ministry and would need to be capable of working with a large team of staff and volunteers. Regarding the Flu Questions have been asked about liturgical practices during the flu season. Some suggestions might help. We do clean the holy water containers, but no one is required to use holy water upon entering or leaving Church. We invite people to share a “sign of peace,” but that does not necessarily imply touching. A reverential bow or a wave is sufficient. Communion from the chalice is optional, but we will continue to offer that possibility. Anyone who feels ill is encouraged to avoid this option. PARISH SURVEY- All Parishioners Urged to Participate One of Father Bill Foley’s initiatives after becoming our new pastor has been the design of a Parish Survey to assess our strengths and opportunities for growth. The Survey will provide a basis for setting long-term goals. Working in conjunction with the Pastoral Council and with the expertise of volunteer parishioner Rita Thiron, the survey will be available via both email and hard copy in early March. It is vital to hear from all members of the parish community. If you are not currently receiving emails from the parish, please send your email to the Parish Secretary/Office Manager, Joan Ward, jward@ blessedsacramentdc.org, to ensure you receive the survey. We hope to have the results of the survey sent to parishioners by this coming fall. We strongly urge all parishioners to participate in this important work. Stations of the Cross Art by Patricia Friend and Poems by the late Helen Orem are on view in the Daystar Gallery, Duffy Parish Center from February 16-April 2. They are beautiful meditations for this Lenten season. Preached Rosary Blessed Sacrament parishioners are invited to join the Sodality in a special Preached Rosary during Lent. The rosary begins in vocal prayer, grows in mental prayer, and blossoms in contemplation. Dominican Friars will provide a Preached Rosary upon the 5 Joyful Mysteries on Monday, March 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the parish chapel. Their theological reflections preceding each decade will aid our meditation and contemplation of the Gospel. A free will offering will be taken up for the Dominican Brothers and they will also offer for sale their sacred music CDs, proceeds of which support the Brothers during their years of academic formation at the Dominican House of Studies here in Washington, DC. The “Big Clean” with Sanctuary Sodality Come one, come all! Join the Sanctuary Sodality on the morning of Thursday, March 22nd, for the Big Clean of the sacred spaces of our church. This annual Lenten event starts directly after the 8 a.m. Mass and demands using only basic skills with familiar household cleaning products! Give as much time as you can to making our church beautiful for Holy Week and Easter. Light breakfast is offered to volunteers. B.S. Young Family Ministry’s Easter Celebration The Blessed Sacrament Young Family Ministry would like to invite all parents with young children under six years old to join us for our Easter celebration on Saturday, March 24, from 10:30 a.m.12:30 p.m. in the school auditorium. Order of Malta Anointing Mass The Federal Association of the Order of Malta cordially invites the sick, disabled, and elderly of the Archdiocese to receive the Sacrament of Anointing at a Lourdes Anointing Mass on Saturday, March 17 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Mercy Church in Potomac.
