Athens First United Methodist Church March 13, 2016 8:30, 9:45 & 11:00 a.m.

Welcome

We are glad you are here! Thank you for joining us for worship this Sunday. Members of this congregation have been gathering here to worship since 1804. Over the past two centuries our congregation has changed, but our mission remains the same: to make disciples of Jesus Christ. We are inspired by the words of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, who encouraged believers to “do all the good you can, in all the ways you can.”

Attendance

Please let us know of your attendance this morning by completing the pew pad.

Newcomer Orientation

We invite you to learn about the life of our church, ways you can get involved, and how to become a member by attending Newcomer Orientation, which is held every second Sunday of the month at 9:45 and 11:00 a.m.

Flowers

The flowers on the altar are given to the glory of God and in loving memory of Leonard and Marjorie Cobb by their daughters, Susan, Melanie, and Len and their families. The flowers in the narthex are given to the glory of God and in loving memory of Ann and Arthur Jarrell by Fran and Richard Lane and Kitty and Frank Meyran.

298 “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross” | HAMBURG When I survey the wondrous cross on which the Prince of Glory died; my richest gain I count but loss, and pour contempt on all my pride. See, from his head, his hands, his feet, sorrow and love flow mingled down. Did e'er such love and sorrow meet, or thorns compose so rich a crown? Were the whole realm of nature mine, that were an offering far too small; love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all.

*THE CALL TO CONFESSION

Search us, O God, and know our hearts; try us and know our thoughts; see if there is any wicked way in us, and lead us in the way everlasting. Let us confess our sins to Almighty God.

*THE PR AY ER OF CONFESSION

Eternal God, we are grateful that you have led us in the past and will continue to lead us in the future. Thank you that your faithfulness to us does not depend upon our faithfulness to you, for often we have failed to follow you. We have sown seeds of war, not peace; we have spoken words of anger, not love; we have failed to build bridges with people in our community when we should reach out to them in Jesus’ name. We repent of these and all our sins and ask your forgiveness. Change our hearts and give us the strength to walk in the ways of reconciliation and peace. We pray this through Christ, our Lord, who showed us how to live this way to your glory.

All pray in silence.

*THE DECL AR ATION OF FORGIV ENESS

The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance: that Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners. He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that we, free from sins, might live for righteousness; by his wounds we have been healed. By his wounds we have been healed. Thanks be to God.

*Please stand as you are able. | The congregation speaks or sings the text in bold type.

Betsy Butler Anthem Lyrics

God I give You all I can today. These scattered ashes that I hid away, I lay them all at Your feet. From the corners of my deepest shame, the empty places where I've worn Your name. Show me the love I say I believe. Oh Help me to lay it down. Oh Lord I lay it down. Oh let this be where I die. My lord with thee crucified. Be lifted high as my Kingdoms fall. Once and for all, once and for all. There is victory in my Savior's loss, and in the crimson flowing from the cross. Pour over me, pour over me yes. Oh let this be where I die. My lord with thee crucified. Be lifted high as my Kingdoms fall. Once and for all, once and for all. Oh Lord I lay it down. Oh Lord I lay it down. Help me to lay it down. Oh Lord I lay it down. Oh let this be where I die. My Lord with thee crucified. Be lifted high as my Kingdoms fall. Once and for all.

Matthew 26:17-19, 26-29

The Prayer of Preparation We do not presume to come to this thy table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under thy table. But thou art the same Lord, whose property is always to have mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to partake of this Sacrament of thy Son Jesus Christ, that we may walk in newness of life, may grow into his likeness, and may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen. The Receiving of the Elements of Communion

At Athens First United Methodist Church, all are invited to commune at Christ’s table. If you need to be served in your pew, please call this to the attention of an usher. Glutenfree communion elements are available at the center station in the front of the sanctuary.

Anthem Lyrics

On my ground with a crown of thorn, He died for us who for us was born. The tree that flowered is cold and bare; no songs, no singing anywhere. O Bethlehem, Ah Jerusalem. Second Adam, Son of Man, into my earth your life’s blood ran. Now from this earth new trees will grow with fruits, with flowers I swear it so. O Bethlehem, Ah Jerusalem. For you I shall wear a crown of trees, and birds will sing from among their leaves. For you I shall wear a crown of trees, now sing birds sing, from among your leaves. O Jerusalem.

We invite you to observe Lent using scripture and prayer. We have included week five from the booklet of Prayers for Lent below. You may also find the material and learn more about the season of Lent on our website. Learn more | athensfirstumc.org/prayersforlent

Week 5 | March 13-19 Prayer of Saint Francis Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; it is in dying to self that we are born to eternal life. Amen.

Our Roots in the Reformation

When was the Reformation, and where did it begin? What was Reformed? Were the people called Methodists once part of the Lutheran Church? Was King James a Lutheran, and did he really translate the King James version of our Bible? Was our founder John Wesley a Catholic or Lutheran priest? Learn the answers to these questions and many more as we discuss our Protestant heritage. If you already know the answers, then join us to share your wisdom and enjoy short biographical videos depicting the stories of some of the martyrs who made the Protestant Reformation and the King James Version of the Bible possible. See how Christianity was born again by the efforts of a few inspired heroes risking, and sometimes losing, their lives proclaiming that salvation comes only by faith in God through Jesus Christ. Join us for this informative and entertaining small group study with minimal reading. This group will meet Mondays, beginning April 4, from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. in room 100.
