THE CALVARY MESSENGER Calvary United Methodist Church seeks and invites all to become disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of our community and our world. It has certainly been a whirlwind few months for Chris and me! On November 18, we welcomed our first child, Anna Marie, into the world. Since then, our lives have been a flurry of diapers, nursing sessions, sleep, waking up from sleep, and as time has passed, watching Anna grow and learn. Chris and I have also grown and continue to learn—and continue to reflect on what kind of parents we want to be for Anna. After all—we cannot so much form her as we can form ourselves and hopefully by our example help form her. As I have reflected on my own childhood, one of the things I am reminded of is the way that social issues—and indeed even political topics—was a normal part of our family’s conversations. By fourth grade I was reading and listening to the sermons of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and I was hearing about local campaigns involving church members. All of this played a role in my own involvement in politics—both student government and local (Baltimore City) politics. I helped lead my high school and the city student governments as well as serving on the city school board as a student member. My life was saturated with public service. And then junior year, it all started to change. My call to politics began turning into a call into ministry. Since then, I have so focused on my religious education and ministry preparation that what once was a near obsession for me has become less even than a hobby. I suppose that as I began my ministry, I was quite aware that my job (as I see it at least) is first and foremost to help lead people more deeply into discipleship and community. And I have seen too many examples of pastors who have apparently decided that they are only truly following Jesus if they take a stand on a political or social issue that instantly draws fire. I do not personally see my job as making people angry just for the sport of it. BUT—I do believe that as a Christian, which is a more powerful identity for me even than ministry, I and all of us are called to speak to those issues which affect people’s lives. As United Methodists, we follow in the long tradition of John Wesley— indeed of Jesus—in our commitment to speak for the least, the last and the lost. Wherever there are people whose voices are not being heard, and who are suffering, we are called to speak up. On February 17th, I had the opportunity to gather with other United Methodists in our state to learn about and advocate for issues on this session’s agenda in Annapolis. The event was organized by our conference United Methodist Women and Calvary’s own Beth Reilly (who works as our annual conference’s advocacy coordinator). I had not done anything like that since high school. We learned about the three legislative advocacy focuses this session for United Methodists: immigration, human trafficking and the alcohol tax/health care. All of these issues are within the main focuses of United Methodist concern all the way back to John Wesley! After learning more about these issues, and the bills on this session’s agenda related to them, we set out in small groups to visit senators. My group, comprised of several Calvary members and a couple other Frederick area UM clergy, visited Frederick’s Senator Ron Young as well as the office of a senator from Baltimore County. We had been charged with advocacy on the immigration issue—specifically a bill (SB 167/HB 470) which would broaden the eligibility for in-state college tuition to include students who attended Maryland schools and have paid taxes in the state. It was, I have to admit, nice to be back in Annapolis speaking for issues that affect the lives of God’s children. Indeed, I know that Calvary is blessed to have many people who are very involved in local, state and even national politics. I also know that our congregation is made up of people of all politics parties and varieties—and no matter what our political stances we are all seeking to serve God in all we do. I hope that you will join me in a renewed focus on how we as followers of Christ can come together and advocate for the least, the last and the lost. This focus will take many different forms in the coming year. You may have opportunity to learn about issues of focus for the United Methodist Church, write letters or make calls in support of those issues, encourage others to do the same, pray for these important social justice issues, or even take part in a discussion about the issues or even particular pieces of legislation. All of this is indeed part of our faithfulness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. My days of political campaigns may have ended in high school, but my interest in social issues must never end. It was good to be reminded of this at the legislative day in Annapolis. And as much as I do hope you will join me in speaking to these issues, my hope most of all is that Chris and I can help Anna understand the importance of doing so. I pray that she never shirks from the opportunity to speak for the least, the last and the lost. Such is our task as followers of Jesus Christ, who did just that. Grace and Peace. Rev. Sarah Schlieckert For more information about the issues and bills mentioned in this article, visit Pastor Sarah’s blog at http://divinepassive.blogspot.com

IN MEMORY of IN HONOR of _________________________________________________________ (circle one) _________________________________________________________________________ Given by _________________________________________________________________________________

The Lenten season is upon us. This is a time Christians focus on the selfless giving act of God, the death of Christ for our sake and His resurrection to open the way to our salvation. Many of us enter into a covenant of self sacrifice; we “give up something for Lent”. It is a small way of emulating Christ’s sacrifice by giving up chocolate, meat or something else that we enjoy. Lent should be a reminder of God’s mercy. It is a reminder of what He “expects” of each of us, as Christians, to think about in our own daily living and in relation to others. Paul, in his letter to the Philippians, said ”Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also the interests of others. Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus.” (Phil. 2:4-5) Christ gave of himself totally – God gave to us fully. God does not ask us to give up all that we have. He does ask us to give all of ourselves to Him. There is a difference. The rich ruler in Luke 18:18 was asked to give all his wealth to the poor because he had not given all of himself to God. He could not give as asked. Zaccheaus, also a man of wealth, was asked only to give of himself and he then gave to the poor a great portion of what he held important. This Lenten period is a good time to really ponder the depth of your commitment and your relationship with God and your fellow man. What should be considered is what you need to change within yourself so that the wall between worldliness and Godliness is destroyed. Is there a feeling that your commitment could be stronger and deeper? Think of all that you have been given. Are you using your time, talents and treasure solely for your own benefit or are you sharing your gifts for the greater good of all your brothers and sisters? Sharing God’s Grace to us with those in need, I/ We covenant together with other members of our church family to give each month to the Calvary Dinner Covenant Fund what I/we consider to be the reasonable cost of a dinner out, to be used to assist those in need in our church, the Frederick community and the world. I/We covenant to continue our giving so long as God’s grace enables us to do so but understand that we may withdraw from the covenant at any time. Camp Jamie May 13, 14, and 15, 2011

Camp Jamie is a special weekend experience for grieving children ages 6-14. This carefully designed program helps children begin to talk about their feelings related to a death of someone special, and teaches them coping skills for dealing with those feelings. Camp Jamie staff includes professional bereavement counselors, specially trained volunteers and psychologists. Children accepted for Camp Jamie are paired with an adult volunteer called a Big Buddies, with whom he or she will spend the weekend. Big Buddies provide companionship, support, friendship and lots of individualized attention for their little buddy. In addition to grief education and support, campers also enjoy camp activities, such as fishing, team games, arts/crafts, hiking, sing-alongs, campfires with storytellers and the Camp Jamie Olympics. All activities provide plenty of opportunities for the children to express themselves and develop bonds with others. Through interactions with other children and adults, campers learn that they are not alone in their grief Thanks to the generosity of the Frederick Community, Camp Jamie is available to the children of Frederick County at no charge. To register a child or become a volunteer for Camp Jamie select one of the applications below. For further questions, call the Hospice office at 240-566-3030. Space is limited, so be sure to register early.

Monthly Breakfast Meeting

Saturday, March 12 7:30 a.m. Please sign up so we have enough food.

In the next few months, we plan to organize Calvary. We will sort, identify, relocate, discard—and you can be a part of the process. Every group will be asked to identify their items; and dispose of those that are not needed. When we find items that we can’t identify a reason to keep, they will be placed in the hallway and you are asked to claim what belongs to your group. Items not removed after two weeks will be given to the UMW Yard Sale or thrown away. We will then inventory stored items and hope to consolidate each group’s space to one location. Contact the church office if you have any questions.

Thank you all for your love, care, prayers, and lots of food during my recovery from surgery. This has been a long road of recovery, but everyday is better. Special thanks to the following families: Valentin-Morales, Stokes, Winter, Dragan, and Chaney. Dinners were wonderful and it was such a burden lifted off my shoulders to not worry about dinner. Also, thanks to all of the parents and youth volunteers who made the Almost Valentine’s Dinner happen! Thank you! Katrina Marie Dear Calvary, I would like to thank the many of you that came out to donate blood at our February 7 Blood Drive. Because of your efforts, we equaled our highest number of units ever collected at the church, with 56 units. To put that in perspective, that means up to 168 people could have been helped by our contributions that day! Speaking of contributions, I would also like to thank loyal volunteers Frank and Bobbie Parsons, as well as newcomers Joe and Ginger Ward, Bob and Jennifer Bennett, and Elizabeth Anderson for giving of their time to work at the blood drive that day. It was one of our most successful drives, and it reflects on the caring so prevalent at our church! All best regards, Eric Anderson P.S. Please mark your calendars for our next drive on Monday, May 9.

Member to Member Dear Family Life Committee and all at Calvary UMC, I would like to thank you for the generous gift I received as a result of the bake-a-batch fundraiser. It will go a long way in helping me as I continue to fight to recover. This spring, I am looking to purchase a device that helps me to stand, and because it is not covered by insurance, your donation will help out so much. I heard that the Nursery was renovated and I need to stop by to see the changes. I was the coordinator when the Nursery underwent its first renovation, so I am excited to see the new improvements. Thanks again to all in the church who baked and bought the yummy creations. I really do appreciate it and am truly blessed. God Bless you, Jennifer Fischer Esler

Dear Calvary Friends, I am writing to thank you for the love and support I received following my fall the week before Christmas. The visits from the ministers at FMH and here at home were a real boost to my morale! Thanks also for the prayers offered at the Tuesday morning prayer group and the cards and well wishes from Calvary friends. I am getting stronger every day with the help of my around-the-clock nurse (Terre), the therapists who come here, lots of rest and the love of family and friends. Love, Peggy Rhoderick

Thank you, Rev. Cole, for the hospital visits Thanks also for the prayers, cards and phone calls from the church family. With the healing aid of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, I thank you.
