THE MESSENGER of the Calvary—Centennial Memorial Cooperative Parish

Calvary United Methodist Church seeks and invites all to become disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of our community and our world.

Season of Lent, Season of spring – Renewal of Life … Soft snowflakes fall as I look out today and the flakes come to rest gently on the buds of our dogwood tree. This quiet activity of nature tells me that we are nearing the wonder of the season of spring. The season of spring is the time of year when creation bursts forth from its wintery rest with the awakening of hibernating creatures, unfolding of fresh new leaves, unpacking of buds and blossoms, nest- building, the chirping of new songs and a renewing of human activity. It is a season of many changes, colors and sounds that have been at rest and waiting. There are countless signs of new life and renewed life. It is God’s creation come alive! Appropriately, Christians journey in the season of Lent simultaneously as we await the arrival of spring. Lent, originating in the 4th Century, begins on Ash Wednesday and ends during Holy Week with the remembrance of Christ’s passion, sacrifice and resurrection. Lent came to be a time of preparation, intense study and prayer for those who were to be baptized at the Easter Vigil, the celebration from sunset on Saturday and sunrise on Easter. Lent is a time for the entire community to prepare, return to God, be restored and renew their faith. The season of Lent accents penitential prayer, fasting, and offers us an opportunity to become aware of God’s marvelous redemption which comes to us at Easter. Likewise, in the season of spring, we experience signs of God’s wondrous creation coming to life, renewed and transformed following the rest of winter. Lent is a season for reflecting on and fasting from the actions, objects, or attitudes in our life that separate us from God. For many it is also a time of renewal and reconnection to our Creator and the wonderful gift of creation. Be energized by the coming of spring and the journey of Lent. Strive to use these days of spring and Lent to strengthen your relationship with Jesus Christ, your Savior and Redeemer, who“came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.” (John 10:10) Watch for the ways that God’s creation reveals itself to you – take walks; sit, listen and be keenly aware of where you are; watch children play; visit a rehab center; or journal spontaneous thoughts; write a letter to a lost friend. Consider committing a regular time to reading Psalms, the Gospels, or Paul’s challenges to the early church to be the community of faith in the midst of persecution. Open your Bible daily and read a passage aloud; pen and ink a favorite verse and send it to a friend; sacrifice time to visit shutins; help someone who is homeless; bring flowers to a friend who needs a lift. Join with others who seek to limit their carbon footprint during Lent by following a Lenten Carbon Fast (macucc.org/carbonfast) making more sustainable life choices. With the seasons of Lent and spring, “I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.” (Romans 12:1) May the Lord speak to you during Lent and coming spring, show you some of the wonders of Creation engage you in serving others and renew your faith. With Christ’s love, Pastor Helen

By Bob Jacobs, Stewardship Ministry Chair

We gather together as Christians to worship the God who created us. We reach one another as we hear, remember and speak the words of the Gospel. We remind ourselves of our imperfections and failures encountered daily in following Paul’s admonition of being Christ like. How do we reach those non-Christians, the unchurched or even our brothers and sisters in Christ who do not worship with us regularly? It happens when we do our best in living the faithful life of a practicing disciple. The key word is “practicing”. We all know someone who says they are a Christian but there is something lacking in their daily actions. Christians who are unselfish and benevolent become a unique verification to non-Christians that Jesus Christ is indeed the Son of God. The story of Dorcas (Acts 9: 32-43) supports this principle. Dorcas is described as a disciple … “who was always doing good and helping the poor.” When she died in Joppa, her fellow Christians went to Lydda (a nearby town) to seek out Peter to come and see what he could do. Upon his arrival: “All the widows stood around him, crying and showing him the robes and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was still with them.” Peter did bring her back to life and presented her to “the believers and the widows.” Dorcas’ unselfish service and care of others; “believers” and unbelievers (“widows”), as well as the two disciples seeking the aid of Peter, is a testament that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and the one we must follow. Those things we do in God’s name when following the example of Christ are the light in our faith life that God speaks of as – a light unto the world. The non-Christian can see that it is something that they can gain if they become like us in the image of Christ.

At the core of our Christian faith is our covenant with our Creator God. We marvel at the wonders and mysteries of God’s creation so beautifully described in Psalm 104. In keeping our covenant with our Creator God, we commit to be good stewards of creation. “Then God said, “Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness; then let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle and over all the wild animals of the earth and every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.” (Gen. 1:26)

Lenten “Stone Soup” Fellowship March 8 @ 11 a.m. Stone Soup is an old folktale in which hungry strangers persuade local people of a town to give them food. As we feed our bodies and souls during Lent 2012, we will use this image at Centennial UMC enjoying gathering at the table and sharing in good fellowship. We invite all who are available to join us Thursday, March 8 at 11 a.m. (following choir rehearsal) for soup, bread and drink (provided) and a brief devotional downstairs. We will use this time to focus our Lenten journey of prayer, meditation, and renewal and enjoy the fellowship of those who are gathered. Plan to be with us! We hope to begin a regular monthly “Stone Soup Fellowship” offering daytime fellowship particularly for our seniors but open to anyone who would like to join us. As we start this group, we will be discussing if we would like to meet at the Church or elsewhere, if we would like to welcome special speakers or cover subjects of interest, and other ideas to make the group interesting. Be thinking and praying about this!!!

As Christ’s disciples, we continue to celebrate our commitment to creation as we believe, “For in [Christ Jesus] all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible … He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” (Col. 1:16-17) With our commitment come responsibilities. Fortunately, we are not alone but we have the wisdom of God’s loving Spirit, the scriptures, and the fellowship of Christ’s body to encourage and support our stewardship commitment. Many are concerned about our role as God’s stewards, the care of creation and seeking to make more sustainable life choices to help save and restore creation. We invite you to join our first gathering of interested persons of all ages from our Calvary-Centennial Memorial UMC Cooperative Parish on Sunday afternoon, March 11 from 2-4 p.m. in our Centennial Memorial UMC Assembly Room. Topics discussed will be our spiritual connection with God’s creation, your concerns about the care of creation, action items for us as individuals, as church families and as citizens of the world, and what we might want to do as a parish team to encourage a greening of our ministries.

Christian Men's Network meets the first Saturday of each month at 7:30 am at Centennial Memorial UMC for a free breakfast and fellowship. Please join us. It is an open nondenominational group gathering who worship together and have a lot of fun. Mr. Richard Wayne Crutchley, Sr., a long time member of Centennial Memorial United Methodist and friend of many went home to God on February 8, 2012. Memorial services were held on Monday, February 13th in the Etchison Memorial Chapel of Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, Frederick, MD. Please keep his family in your prayers as they go through this time of grief and loss.

Come, bring your ideas, concerns, share what you are doing, and suggestions. If you have questions, feel free to call on Pastor Helen at 301-432-5644 or email @ [email protected]. 8

Weekday School News….. Registration continues for the 2012-2013 school year. Classes are offered for three and four year olds as well as kindergarten. The kindergarten class operates from 9:00 am until 12:30 pm so it is the perfect choice for parents that prefer not to have their five year old in school all day. The classes of the preschool and kindergarten are limited to 16 students which allows for individualized attention in a loving and nurturing environment. We are excited to announce that we have had a positive response from the parents of the Weekday School to our request for donated food items to support those children in Frederick County that do not have access to nutritious food over the weekend. The School kicked off our campaign for ‘Food For Backpacks’ on Mon., Feb. 13th and by Tues., Feb. 14th we had a huge amount of food donated and a delivery was made to the Monocacy Elementary School. We will continue this campaign until the end of this school year. There are plastic tubs are on both the 2nd and 3rd floor of the education building if you are interested in contributing; and there is a list of recommended donations on the bulletin board in the lobby. For more information about the ‘Food For Backpacks’ program please call the school office at 301.662.6783. 11

Member to Member It is such a wonderful feeling knowing I am so blessed with so many people who continue to help me in my efforts to get stronger each day. I was overwhelmed with the kindness and love shown and very honored that the “Bake-A-Batch” event was done for my benefit. I want to personally thank all the volunteers, supporters, and bakers involved in the event. I also want to thank the church members, family life, and all who purchased the treats. You are all so special to me. The generous gift I received will not go to waste. The funds will go toward my continued rehabilitation and medical bills. Thanks to all you have provided me, I am able to work with a machine that allows me to stand for two hours a day. My goal is to someday be able to stand on my own and walk again. It can be a difficult road, but with the knowledge of the love and support I receive from all of you, I am confident I can achieve it. I think of you all often and am receiving updates from Angela Anderson via Facebook of all the things going on in the nursery. I am sure so much has changed since my days when I was in charge. I do miss it. Again, thank you so much. May God bless you all for your kindness. Jennifer Fischer Esler
