President’s Message

As a child, my parents worked hard to come up with some really fun ideas for my birthday parties. I celebrate my 34th birthday March 5th and I am not ashamed to say I still throw myself a birthday party each year. Sure, they aren’t quite the blowout extravaganzas like my fifth-grade bash at the old Frosty Putters or my sixth-grade birthday party at the former Leaps and Bounds facility, but it usually involves dinner or a night out with friends. I love birthdays. The one thing that’s nice is I don’t ever have to worry about attendance at my birthday – I have a really great group of random friends from different stages in my life that always seem to make time for me. So my new goal this year is to treat each ribbon cutting and event a business puts together like it’s my birthday. I know how disappointed I would feel if people didn’t show for something that was important

to me so let’s try and get to as many events as your schedule allows. Each business should feel important and we want our businesses to be able to show off their services and what makes them vital to Orland Park. My challenge to you is to complete the following list at least five times in 2015. I am going to call it the “5 in 15.” 1. Check out the calendar of events at www.orlandparkchamber. org. Events are offered in the morning, afternoon and evening so there should be at least one you can make it to. 2. Select one that sounds interesting to you and RSVP online. By RSVPing your attendance, the business hosting the event can better plan when it comes to food, drinks and even space. 3. Put it into your own calendar so you don’t forget to attend. I use my iPhone to keep track of all I need to do, but personal planners and calendars are more than OK, too!

Mayor’s News and Notes

The Village of Orland Park debuted its new civic engagement program in January --- In Our Community Orland Park. Having people more aware, involved, and engaged is imperative for businesses and government alike. This is a first-of-its-kind civic engagement program that rewards points for things people do in town. Orland Park area residents who join In Our Community earn points for taking action, whether it’s by promoting community events or area businesses through social media, attending events or providing feedback. Members then redeem their points for attractive rewards and experiences. In Our Community brings all aspects of a community closer together --- the residents, organizations and businesses. Businesses are invited to participate through advertising. In just a few weeks since its launch, more than 600 area residents have registered for the program, and we anticipate membership to reach the thousands. Chamber members can create free accounts today at inour. community/orlandpark or if you’re interested in advertising, write to [email protected].

4. Call another chamber member or a new business to invite them to attend with you. While it’s easy to call your chamber friend all the time, reach out to a new business owner who you think might be interested. Even if they aren’t free, they’ll appreciate the offer you extended. 5. Attend the event and talk to at least two new people you don’t know. That person could be your next financial planner, hair stylist or attorney. You never know when that new contact may come in handy. I also have one other challenge to you. For the first 20 people that RSVP to attend one of the Success in Business Series (formerly known as the Monthly Membership Meetings), one lucky attendee will attend the event for free. Sometimes the early bird does get the worm.

Resource Corner What REALLY is Organic? What does it mean if a food label says Organic…? • Produce that is grown without the use of pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, genetically modified organisms, or ionizing radiation • Animals that produce meat, poultry, eggs & dairy products are never given antibiotics or growth hormones & are not fed animal bi-products

products 1- 100% organic: product is made with 100% organic ingredients 2- Organic: product is made with 95% organic ingredients 3- Made with Organic ingredients: Product is made with a minimum of 70% organic ingredients with strict restrictions & that the remaining 30% include no GMO’s PERHAPS YOU’VE ALREADY NOTICED…There will be color and texture change in the products. Why?

• Crops are grown in safe soil

• Organics cannot be irradiated.

• All products sold as “organic” must be certified – Certification includes: • Annual submission of an organic system plan & inspection of farm fields & processing facilities.

• Organic raw materials vary in color

The USDA has identified 3 labeling categories for organic

COCKTAIL PARTY TIDBITS

• Grapeseed oil has a LONG history. It was eaten by the prophet David in the Old Testament when he was fasting. This practice was made popular

Submitted by Michelle Sabia, Wildtree

in 2010 by a book entitled “Daniel Fast” by Susan Gregory. During the 3 week fast, he ate only foods from seeds and drank water.

Clinical Documentation • It was documented in the American College of Cardiology in March, 2010 that grapeseed oil, which contains a mixture of polyunsatured oils may increase HDL-C levels by 13% • According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, UMMC, a preliminary study has shown promising results that a combination of grape seed oil and chromium taken for 2 months can lower total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol. • Cardiovascular researchers at University of California Davis performed the first human study on the effects of grape seed oil and extract on hypertensive patients. One group of patients

received a placebo, while two other groups received different doses of grape seed extract experienced blood pressure drops. As more human research is done, grape seed oil may play a prominent role in the treatment and prevention of high blood pressure. Grapeseed oil discourages the oxidation of LDL cholesterol, a process that leads to the formation of atherosclerotic plaque that clogs your arteries. Just 2 tablespoons of Grapeseed Oil a day may improve your cholesterol levels in just a few weeks time.

The Therapeutic Value of Grapeseed Oils

• While one of the benefits of grapeseed oil is it’s higher smoke point and while it is safe to saute, grill or bake with it without fear of oxidation – we get the greatest therapeutic value from of our oils when eaten raw and unheated.
