Letter from the Editor

As I write this article, the rodeo and bull riding worlds are brimming with the excitement of the PBR’s Iron Cowboy and the RFD-TV The American which will take place this weekend. This has to be one of the richest weekends in western sports history especially since The American semi-finals also had $1 million added to the purse by RFD-TV to increase the opportunities for the contestants who are working their way through the qualifier system to advance the The American Finale at AT&T Stadium. It is amazing to think about the money that can be won these days riding bulls. However, it is important to remember that there are a large number of guys and gals who are out there competing in the sport just for the love of the game. Many of them are happy to breakeven by winning enough to cover their travel expenses and entry fees. This is where we, as fans, can make a huge difference by being there to support and encourage these athletes, at all levels of competition, as they give their best to achieve success in this sport. This issue of HNH is packed with some great articles and awesome photographs. One of the things I enjoy most about being involved in rodeo and bull riding is the people you get to meet who come from all walks of life. It is a privilege to get to introduce you to them, as well. I am also extremely thankful for the dedicated team that works diligently each and every month to make this the best bull riding magazine in the world. Without them, none of this would be possible.

Failure has its Place but Success Breeds Success Hey, we’ve all put kids on ones and said to ourselves later “I wish I hadn’t” but we must learn from it and treat them like precious possessions, given to us to take care of. A kid has no true understanding of the danger involved with bull riding. We are responsible for what they get on. Donnie Gay tells about how Neil would make him turn out if he thought the bulls were too big for him and Donnie hated it at the time but is thankful that his dad knew when and when not to let him on. The same story is the one of Cody Teel, his dad Robbie did the same for him. Cody thanked his dad the other day for protecting him when he was young even though it made him so mad to have to turn out while his friends were getting on bulls that outmatched them. I wouldn’t let my son Brett go to state his 6th grade or his freshman year because I knew he was in no way ready for the stock that would be there. He was mad but I think he understands it better now. This whole issue of kids being over matched and mucked out is the most important thing to the bull riding industry. Too many involved that don’t understand (or won’t) or guys that just care more about bulls than kids. I have a bunch of people who don’t like me but I’ll keep putting the word out there about the things that are the best for the kids.

successful career in the pros. Everyone of them is going to have the same moral to the story “Success breeds Success” and “Being overmatched causes harm”. No matter what anyone else says, a kid is only so good and needs to go through important steps in order to get to the next level of competition. If they fail more than they succeed then they will settle for mediocre. I believe this is the norm in bull riding now. I’m certainly not knocking the riders but am calling out the ones who should be directing them the right way. Parents, youth rodeo Leaders, bull breeders, former bull riders who train and professional rodeo/bull riding organizations are at fault for not setting standards for training the youth in our awesome sport. I have three fingers pointing back at me as I point my finger at all the above. I am involved in each of the problem areas that I mentioned. Being quiet about it and thinking it’ll fix itself is stupid. We have to get extreme about how we go about raising up the future bull riders here in America. We are losing ground here while others are gaining ground as they see a future for their youth in the sport.

Parents and the leaders of these youth organizations need to get some good educated information as to how to best help the kids become great and still have their health as they get a bit older. Most people are just going with the flow and are pushing the kids too fast to be bull riders rather than letting them enjoy it and experience success all the way through.

The next issue is getting the youth to buy into the (going through the process) mentality. The competition level of bull riding in the lower tiers is so weak that guys are making money by merely staying on. So many good bulls out there that most events don’t payout $ to every hole possible. A guy can get on a runner and collect a check, this puts the idea in his head that he is a bull rider that is making a living riding bulls so he enters events at the next level without dominating at that level, then gets lucky and stays on at one of those and thinks that is where he belongs. (Probably Not).

Dominating at every level is the best for any athlete. Ask any NFL, NBA, NBL player how it is best done in preparing for a

He is left with a task ahead of him that he is not ready to conquer because he never dominated at each level. Youth and

Humps-Horns.com · 8 · March 2017

try will go a long way but it is not the fullness of what it takes to have a solid career. A solid career is developed through hard work and a lot of success mixed with some failure. Experiencing failure more than success is not the best thing for a solid career. Parents have to buy into the (going through the process) mentality and show their kids that it’s the way to go also. We’ve all seen a young guy make his debut on the scene and have some early success but begin to struggle and all of a sudden they disappear from the bull riding world. Some eventually make it to the top but few are ever even heard of again because they never experienced enough success along the way to make up for the failure at the level they have always

dreamed of. Failure is a part of the process but if that is all they experience then it becomes the norm, not just a small piece of the big picture. Constant failure does crazy things to their minds and many go to the amateur level (which many skipped as a part of the process) and have little success there because they have been trained to fail at every level. Once a great light and future in the bull riding industry they become a disgrace to the talent they had and in most cases their whole life follows that same path. This is not all I have to say on this subject but all I have time to write today. Have a good day.

work your way up. You shouldn’t feel any pain during this exercise, so stop immediately if something doesn’t feel right. This exercise is a great way to stretch the thumbs and the tops of the hands. 2. Strengthening Your Pinch This one requires either a stress ball, or better yet, some putty that you can easily press without pain. With either of these items, simply pinch or squeeze the ball/ putty with only two fingers (your thumb and a forefinger). When Arthritis sets in, being able to pinch objects can become harder and more painful. This exercise will keep these finger muscles flexed and active and help blood to flow around the joints in your hands. 3. Finger Joint Flex

10 Hand Exercises to Relieve Arthritis Hand Pain

When it comes to everyday tasks such as opening a letter, plugging in an electronic device, or simply eating a meal, pain in the hands can make all of these ordinary tasks seem unbearable. The most common form of arthritis to affect the hands is osteoarthritis, and it keeps millions from living a normal day without dealing with pain in the wrists, hands, or fingers. As far as physical therapy goes, there are numerous hand exercises that can help ease this pain, and even help to prevent it altogether. These exercises strengthen the muscles in the hands, keep the hands flexible, remove stiffness in the joints, and promote a healthy blood flow. If you are already experiencing stiffness and swelling in your hands, you probably already know how important blood flow is when it comes to reducing your pain. The following exercises have been chosen as some of the most simple and effective exercises for those experiencing arthritic pain in their hands. Nearly all of them can be performed anywhere or anytime and require nothing more than some designated time of day to perform them. Here’s a look at 10 of the best hand exercises for relieving arthritis pain in the hands. 1. Thumb Circles Start by shaping your hands as if you are giving “two thumbs up.” With your forearms parallel to the ground, and your thumbs pointing to the ceiling, start moving the thumbs individually in a circular motion. You can rotate clockwise for a while and after 10-15 seconds, you can change direction. You can also, if you’re able, to move the thumbs in a different direction at the same time. Start slowly in speed, and

With your affected hand resting on a table, turn your palm towards the ceiling. With the opposite hand, grasp one of the forefingers at the middle (between the two knuckle joints). Simply raise the finger upwards with the opposite hand and straighten the finger at the same time. When done properly, the hand and other fingers will be flat, while one finger is pointed straight to the ceiling. It’s not going to look perfect, but the object of this exercise is to strengthen and flex the joints in the fingers. It will keep blood pumping regularly and ease swelling in the joints of the fingers. 4. Hand Press This is another way to strengthen the muscles in your hand. Place one hand flat on a table with the palm facing down. Place your other hand on top of that hand with your fingers on top of the bottom hand fingers. Simply add a little weight and try to raise the fingers on the bottom upwards. Apply as much pressure as you would like and then you can lift the fingers simultaneously or one at a time. 5. Table Bends Place your fist on a table or flat, supportive surface with your thumb pointing up.

Humps-Horns.com · 10 · March 2017

Extend the thumb upwards and extend the fingers outward for a few seconds, then inward for a few seconds. The fingers should touch the inside of your palm, if possible. This step is easy because you get to rest your arm and hand on a surface for the entire exercise; it is perfect for those who are experiencing severe amounts of pain from arthritis in their hands. 6. Finger Curls Simple and straightforward, just extend your arm out with your forearm parallel to the ground or resting on a table, with your wrist straight, then extend your fingers and draw them back into the palm. Your thumb shouldn’t move and should be on the outside of your fingers at all times. It should look like all four of your fingers are doing tiny sit-ups at the same time. You can even curl the fingers individually, depending on your preference. 7. The Fist Just as it sounds, with your arm extended and your thumb on the outside of your fingers, make a typical fist. It may sound easy, but the goal is to start small with an almost loose fist, and then work your way up in firmness. It is also important to try and hold the fist in that position for at least 10-15 seconds. If that is too long to hold without experiencing pain, start with a looser grip and hold for less time until you can make it 10 seconds. This exercise improves flexibility, strengthens the finger muscles, and promotes healthy blood flow in the hands. Not to mention, the fact that you can do this exercise whenever and wherever you want. 8. The ”O” Hand Exercise The idea here is to make an “O” shape with your fingers and your thumb, holding it in place for a few seconds before releasing the fingers from the “O” position. Placing your fingers in this position is not a common motor movement and can help stretch areas of the hand that are often forgotten about. Remember, when performing any of these hand exercises, take it slow. Stop immediately if you feel any abnormal or severe amounts of pain.

9. Finger Bends Start by holding your hand out and extending all of your fingers. Then slowly retract your thumb and hold it for a few seconds. Then do this with your index finger, middle finger, and so on. Try bending one finger inward while keeping it straight, as well as curled inward. You can reverse the direction or start from beginning again, but do this exercise repeatedly until the stiffness is reduced. This exercise is perfect for soreness or tension in the knuckles of the fingers. 10. Paper Crumple Okay, so this one can be a little fun, and also beneficial in strengthening the muscles in your hands. Simply hold the corner of a piece of paper that is no longer or wider than a foot (newspaper works best for those experiencing a lot of pain in their hands), and try to crumple up the paper as fast as possible. This not only flexes and strengthens the hands but also improves reflexes. Strengthening the hands is a great way to prevent further pain in the hands, as well as help to manage the pain you currently experience. shoreline since they are anything but round. However, the surface of the oceans (its face) is round or spherical in shape. We know such to be true because the earth is a sphere and the oceans take on a rounded (or if you will, a circular) shape. A disk shaped world would not give the oceans a circular, rounded, or dome shape. Isaiah lived about 740-681 BC. Solomon, who wrote Proverbs, lived about 990-931 BC. Thus, the idea that the earth was spherical has been around for many thousands of years, probably for as long as man has been on the earth.

by Keno Shrum

The Myth Of The Flat Earth

Douglas Main, the writer of the Newsweek article, goes on to note that Christianity didn’t change the acceptance of a round earth.

Often times modern science and modern history do not coincide with the Word of God. Actually, we can learn a tremendous amount of history and science simply by reading the good book. The following is contributed by Jeffrey Hamilton of the La Vista church of Christ. I ran across an article, from Newsweek of all places, that pointed out that humanity as a whole never really believed in the concept of a flat earth. [Douglas Main, “Even in the Middle Ages, People Didn’t Think the Earth Was Flat,” Newsweek, 16 January 2016]. “A round Earth appears at least as early as the sixth century B.C. with Pythagoras, who was followed by Aristotle, Euclid, and Aristarchus, among others in observing that the earth was a sphere.” By the first century A.D., “the sphericity of the earth was accepted by all educated Greeks and Romans.” [Jeffrey Burton Russell, historian, 1997]. Actually, it should be noted that we have even earlier evidence of the belief. “When He prepared the heavens, I was there, when He drew a circle on the face of the deep” (Proverbs 8:27). “It is He who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers, who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them out like a tent to dwell in” (Isaiah 40:22). The Hebrew word translated as “circle” is chuwg (or sometimes transliterated as khug). It translates the concept of something round, rounded, or dome shaped and can be applied to a spherical shape. For example, the other place this word is used is “Clouds are a hiding place for Him, so that He cannot see; and He walks on the vault of heaven” (Job 22:14) to describe shape of the sky. Notice that “dome” would be an accurate translation in all three usages of the word in the Bible. Chuwg is not used in the Bible to describe a flat circle or a disk. You cannot take what people wish this word to mean and then state that is how it was used by the writers of the Bible. The Hebrew word for a flat circle, by the way is cabab. “So he had the ark of the LORD taken around the city, circling it once; then they came into the camp and spent the night in the camp” (Joshua 6:11). Proverbs 8:27 is of particular interest because it says the oceans (the deep) are round or circular. Yet, it cannot be describing the shape of the

Humps-Horns.com · 14 · March 2017

“While between two and five early popes denied the sphericity of the Earth, the vast majority of people disagreed. “The point is that no educated person believed” the Earth was flat, Russell notes.” So where did the myth arise that ancient people believed in a flat earth? “The fault lies with 19th century writers such as Washington Irving, Jean Letronne and others. Letronne was “an academic of strong antireligious prejudices ... who cleverly drew upon both to misrepresent the church fathers and their medieval successors as believing in a flat earth, in his On the Cosmographical Ideas of the Church Fathers,” published in 1834, Russell writes.” Wanting to disparage Christianity, these writers decided that early religious people had to have believed in a flat earth -- not because of evidence but because of their own dislike of religion. “Why bother perpetuating falsehoods? Russell and Gould suggest the flat-earth myth was used to demonize Christians and religion in general, and to lionize scientists. “The falsehood about the spherical earth became a colorful and unforgettable part of a larger falsehood: the falsehood of the eternal war between science (good) and religion (bad) throughout Western history,” Russell writes. “The reason for promoting both the specific lie about the sphericity of the earth and the general lie that religion and science are in natural and eternal conflict in Western society, is to defend Darwinism,” he continues, which was introduced around the same time. “The flat-earth lie was ammunition against the Creationists. The argument was simple and powerful, if not elegant: ‘Look how stupid these Christians are. They are always getting in the way of science and progress. These people who deny evolution today are exactly the same sort of people as those idiots who for at least a thousand years denied that the earth was round. How stupid can you get?’” People readily accepted this lie because it matches the general belief that modern people are more advanced and knowledgable than the ancients. The real problem is that we tend to forget the past. “Is there anything of which it may be said, “See, this is new”? It has already been in ancient times before us. There is no remembrance of former things, nor will there be any remembrance of things that are to come By those who will come after” (Ecclesiastes 1:10-11). Sure, our technology has improved, but that doesn’t mean our ancestors were ignorant. Nor is there anything inherent in religion that only attracts less intelligent people. History has shown repeatedly that many of our greatest advances have been accomplished by people with strong faith in God. Knowledge doesn’t evolve; it is discovered and sometimes lost, only to be rediscovered again by later generations. We as a nation rely so heavily on modern science, yet the answers lie in a much more reliable book. The Holy Bible. If you would like to learn more about what our Lord has to say, please “...come and let us reason together...” (Isaiah 1:18). In HIS love, Keno Shrum

When anyone in the bull riding industry hears the name Lane Frost, it automatically conjures visions of greatness and success. That name embodies a legacy that has continued for almost 30 years and will continue to carry on for many more. A number of years ago, a small group of bull riding enthusiasts decided to build a bull riding series in Utah to pay homage to the great name of Lane Frost. In 2001, in Lane’s home town of Vernal, Utah, a bull riding tour to honor his name began and has evolved into a premier series of events which has been the start of many great careers. Over the years, great names such as Luke Snyder and Jory Markiss have ridden in the arenas that The Lane Frost Challenge has occupied. These are only a couple names of top tier and world champion bull riders this amazing series has drawn. January 20th and 21st proved to be another stepping stone for young bull riders with gold buckle dreams. The town of Vernal, Utah, which sits in the northwest corner of the state, was taken over by bull riding fever for the weekend. With no less enthusiasm and grandeur than the highest levels of professional bull riding, this town of just over 10,000 people expanded and welcomed 50 great young bull riders and a long list of top notch bulls.

Over two nights of bull riding, this event featured some rather impressive names. Great bull riders such as Kritter Lamb of the PRCA along with numerous developing young bull riders from as far away as Oregon and California. With a shoot-out style format, the first night bucked all 50 bull riders with Kyler Oliver sitting on top of the list with an 87.5 ride on Hondo King from Whitley Bucking Bulls. Night two brought back the 40 top riders for their second trip. Round 2 brought just as much excitement as the first round with Payton Nelson scoring an 85.5 on Iron Hide. The finale of the event was an extremely high energy short round which brought back the top 10 competitors. Qualification for the short round was determined by an accumulated score as rounded out by the top scores from the two previous rounds. As the short round began, the winner was from being decided. Kache Moosman came out with guns blazing and posted an 84 on Ringo but this score would not last long. Young Kyler Oliver from Roy, Utah would be the last rider to compete, Kyler drew the bull, Bull Knuckle, from Hayden and McCurdy. From the crack of the gate you could feel how special this ride would be. Jump for jump, Kyler matched every move that Bull Knuckle threw at him. At the end of the 8 seconds Kyler had dominated the beast for a monster score of 90.5 points, which was enough to win the short round as well as the event.

There is a small cowboy town situated in the rolling hills of the Red River Valley, right in the heart of the north Texas hill country. Founded in 1849, Saint Jo, Texas is the oldest town in Montague county, and has a population of just over one thousand people. But this little town has a big heritage and a rich history.

Saint Jo was originally called Head of Elm, because it was located close to the headwaters of the Elm fork of the Trinity River. One of many theories as to how the name was changed to Saint Jo, involves founder Joe Howell’s opposition to alcoholic beverage sales, which earned him the nickname “Saint Jo”. That handle stuck to both Howell and the town he founded. St. Jo has a much bigger claim to fame as the last stop in Texas before the Red River for the cowboys driving their cattle north to Kansas on the famed Chisholm Trail. They would re-supply and stop for a drink at the Stonewall Saloon (which still stands today as a museum, photo p. 21). It is estimated that over 35,000 cowboys drove between four and six million cattle north on the Chisholm Trail to Abilene, Kansas. Thus St. Jo can boast that it played a huge part in developing the image and tradition of the American cowboy.

J.D. just acquired a new addition of 25 acres with a house and a barn sitting at the Head of Elm on the old Chisholm Trail. J.D also owns 01 Construction Company. He is proud of the 2012 renovation work he did on the Stonewall Saloon, a historic landmark that was established in 1873. That work included a second story addition and an elevator. J.D. started riding bulls when he was thirteen years-old, where he became good friends with J.W. Hart and H.D. Page. “I went to school in Texas, but I rodeoed in Oklahoma.” J.D. revealed. “I used to go to J.W.’s on the weekends, and I spent summers living and working on H.D.’s ranch. Dillon and Lisa Page are like a second set of parents to me. I’ve really been influenced by Page bull techniques.”

That tradition lives on in cowboy J.D. Dunn and the 01 Cattle Company who call St. Jo, Texas home. Here J.D., wife Susan, and eleven year-old son Daultyn own 125 acres and lease about 600 acres that lay alongside Elm Creek. “We have about a hundred head,” J.D. shared. “From yearlings to six year-olds and heifers. I raise about eight to twelve bull calves each year, and I try to sell a half-interest in the best ones.” “We’re not a big operation,” J.D. said. “We don’t have a lot of partners, but the partners we have are really, really good. I’m much smaller than the big outfits. Because we’re small, we have to get the most out of what we have. I think the thing that concerns me the most is that we stay small enough to spend time with all our bulls. That individual time we get to spend with the animals helps us to give them all a fair shot. We can more easily decide which bull calves may be good buckers.” “I would say this about me,” J.D. continued. “I’ve probably made more money with less bulls than most contractors. I’ve earned over $700,000 in the past four years with the bulls I have. We raise our own bulls and typically haul them to ABBI (American Bucking Bull Inc.) or PBR (Professional Bull Rider) events.”

“I rode bulls for eighteen or nineteen years, about half of that as a professional,” J.D. said. “I actually started out buying and selling horses when I first quit riding. Then I got married in 2001, and my wife Susan and I started the 01 Cattle Company. We have a real strong work ethic. We do everything ourselves. We raise our own bulls, we raise all our own hay, and we work hard and play hard.” “I haul and flank my own bulls,” J.D. disclosed. “But on weekends where I have bulls going to different events, Robbie Schroeder helps haul my bulls. J.W. Hart helps me out sometimes, too.”

Swamp Wreck bucked off Rubens Barbosa at the PBR BFTS in Oklahoma City in January in 7.31 seconds. This past weekend at the PBR BFTS event in Kansas City, Swamp Wreck

J.D. is hauling some pretty good bucking bulls right now. His classic four year-old 5A After Midnight (partners Roy Hodges, Ricky and Karen Shuler and Christopher Whitehead) just took third place in the ABBI Classic Round at the PBR BFTS event in Kansas City on February 11 with a score of 88.25. battled with Luis Blanco and finally dumped him at 7.98 seconds. “Swamp Wreck really changes it up,” J.D. observed. “He doesn’t really have a set bucking pattern. He’ll go either way. He’s a pretty easygoing bull, as long as you approach him on foot. He doesn’t like it if you try to push him around on horseback. I keep Swamp Wreck by himself when I haul him and I keep him penned by himself too.” “Bull riding has been good to me, J.D. said. “ As I said earlier, we don’t have a big operation. I don’t necessarily want to raise more bulls, just better bulls.”

Cody Heffernan only lasts 1.91 seconds on After Midnight.

Marco Eguchi

Healthy and Ready for a Strong 2017 By Barbara Pinnella

Marco Eguchi’s talent has never been denied, but injuries have kept him from achieving the goals that he, and most of his peers, felt he would accomplish. In his first three seasons competing on the BFTS tour, Eguchi finished in the top 15. In 2013 he wound up sixth in the World standings, which was a career best for the Brazilian. But things change quickly in the bull riding business, and it was the next year that his most debilitating injury occurred, derailing all his big plans for the future. In Nampa, Idaho, a bull stepped on his right elbow, which also happens to be his riding arm. He continued to try to ride, but his poor performances eventually got him cut from the BFTS tour early in 2015.

Marco was able to grind his way back to the big stage last summer and fully intends to stay there. He is ready both mentally and physically, and is back to his winning riding form. “I feel great,” Eguchi told us. “I am at 100% so everything is good. I don’t have any pain now. I am riding with a brace and it doesn’t hurt anymore. Mentally I am feeling great, too, because I don’t have any pain anywhere. I am confident to ride now, so everything is going well.” Many people would have opted for surgery to repair that elbow, especially considering how long it had been bothering him. But Marco is not a big fan of operations, so he did not entertain that alternative. “I have had surgeries before and they didn’t work out,” he said. “I didn’t feel any better afterwards, so I just don’t like getting surgeries. I decided not to get an operation and let it heal naturally instead.” Even though it has taken a long time for him to make it back, one cannot argue with his decision. Early in this BFTS season Eguchi is sitting in fourth place in the World standings, and is riding at more than a 60% ratio. As of this writing, between the Velocity Tour and the BFTS, Marco also has six top 10 finishes and four top five finishes. The 27-year-old Eguchi does not have a favorite bull to get on, but rather a type of bull. “I have a preference for bulls that go to the right. That is better for me, because I am a right-handed rider. I don’t prefer any one particular bull, just those that turn to the right.” That could not have been demonstrated any better than in Chicago this January. Marco covered the Dakota Rodeo / Chad Berger / Clay Struve / Miller bull Catfish John in the Championship Round for a big score of 89 points, his highest-scoring ride in three years. And Marco Eguchi rides Jordan’s Jacket for 88.5 points and the event win in Tacoma, WA. Photo by Andy Watson/ BullStockMedia. com., provided courtesy of PBR.

yes, Catfish John went to the right. With regard to his traveling partners, he told us that usually all the (Brazilian) cowboys travel together. “I go with Fabiano (Vieira) and Dener (Barbosa), and all the rest. When we travel by car we all travel together, with several of us in each car.” Eguchi likes to spend his free time fishing. He really enjoys that, and it must be a very nice and quiet compliment to the rather frenetic eight seconds on the job as a bull rider.

Many of the other riders who have come over here from Brazil have bought homes, ranches, and the like here in the States. We wondered if Marco has followed that trend. “I have been trying to get my U.S. Residency, but I am having trouble with that right now. I don’t want to buy any property until I get that, so currently my wife and I live in an apartment that I rent.” Regardless of where he lives, a healthy Eguchi can be expected to be found around the BFTS tour for a long time. He is a welcome addition to the Brazilian contingent, and we at Humps N Horns Magazine want to wish him continued good luck this season.

Shane Proctor rides American Hustle (D&H Cattle Co. / Leflore) for 86.75 points in round 1 on his way to the event victory in Anaheim.

The PBR celebrated their 20th anniversary holding an event in Anaheim, CA, and they played to an enthusiastic and huge crowd both nights. The Southern California fans know their bull riding, and were passionate for the bulls and riders alike. They also appreciated the wonderful patriotic spirit that the PBR is known for. Shane Proctor loves the fans here in the Golden State, and said that he always seems to ride well in California. After going two for four in Sacramento the previous weekend, Shane rode two of his three bulls to grab the victory in Anaheim and is currently in eighth place in the BFTS world standings.

Proctor covered the D&H Cattle Co / Leflore bull American Hustle for a score of 86.75 in the first round to tie for fourth. The next night he rode Flight Plan, and was awarded a score of 85.75 for a sixth place finish. Flight Plan is owned by Chad Berger / Heald Pro Bulls. In the Championship Round, Proctor got dusted by Catfish John, but with his two rides prior to that he was able to exact a little bit of payback. “I had two bulls that had bucked me off earlier,” Shane told us. “American Hustle, he bucked me off in the PBR Finals a couple of

With that performance, Pearl Harbor was given a bull score of 46.50, and was named the YETI Bull of the Event. Injuries, unfortunately, took a toll in Anaheim. In one of the scariest wrecks we have seen in some time, 2008 World Champion Guilherme Marchi was knocked out cold in the Championship Round by Spotted Demon. Marchi never moved as the sports medicine team ran in and put him on a backboard to carry him out of the arena. At the time of this writing the only injury report is that he suffered a concussion – not a good thing at all, but for those of us in attendance it looked to be so much worse at the time. Paulo Lima suffered some broken ribs when he was stepped on by Back Jackin in the first round. Neither of these men would be competing in Kansas City the following weekend, and events after that remain to be seen. Our congratulations to Shane Proctor on his win and that climb up the BFTS ladder, and we hope for fast healing for Marchi and Lima.

years back, and Flight Plan bucked me off in Chicago in the 15/15 a couple of weeks ago. So I got revenge, and I got the win on top of it.” Twelve men covered their bulls in the first round, and the best man on that Friday night was Joao Ricardo Vieira. He scored an 87.75 on More Big Bucks, owned by Dakota Rodeo / Chad Berger / Clay Struve. Even fewer men, nine to be exact, were able to get the eight seconds the next night, and it was Luis Blanco who topped the leader board on Saturday. Apparently, 87.75 was a popular winning score, as that is what Blanco was given as well. He rode the J.D. Nix Rodeo Co. bull, Sosa’s Alley Cat. The bulls in the Championship Round were in a word, tough! They came to play and meant business. When the dust settlede there was only one who was able to conquer his opponent. That man was Rubens Barbosa. He handled Cracker Breaker, a bull from D&H Cattle Co. / Buck Cattle Co. he was given a score of 85.50 for his trouble. J.B. Mauney picked Pearl Harbor to be his dance partner in the Championship Round, but that great bull from Dakota Rodeo / Chad Berger / Clay Struve / H&C Bucking Bulls just dominated, Mike Lee rides Stone Sober (D&H Cattle Co.) in the championship round but comes down early at 4.2 seconds.

but he finished with a bang placing in both rounds and taking home his second NPBR World Finals Championship and the Monsoon Silver Trophy Buckle. Last and certainly not least, the 2017 Mercedes Tour Monsoon Silver Trophy Buckle was presented to Andrew Alvidrez of Seminole, TX. Andrew put together two good rides, riding MM 812 Young Guns in the short round, for an average of 164 on 2. This put him in the running for this title and he was able to maintain it to the end. Congratulations to all these winners and to the bull riders that placed in each round.
