Mark Your Calendars Ash Wednesday is Coming!! Wednesday, March 6th The Season of Lent is fast approaching. We will begin Lent with Ash Wednesday worship services at 6:00 & 7:30 pm.

On January 28th Servant of Christ held its annual meeting after the second service. I want to thank everyone who took time out of their schedule to attend. At the meeting we voted on very important things like adopting a new budget for 2019 of $969,334. We voted in a new church council (please see article inside of this newsletter), we heard that over the last 20 years the congregation has supported ministries outside of our four walls to the tune of 1.4 million. Two other really important things happened. First, Julie Rose who headed up the Holy Cow Survey this past fall briefed us on the results. It revealed some really important stuff to us about the congregation. For those interested she will lead a follow up session with more in depth information on Sunday, March 3 rd both during and after the second service in the Fellowship Hall. The congregation also voted to engage a consultant to lead us in a capital campaign in either the later part of 2019 or 2020. The focus of the campaign will be to help prepare SOC to face the future by upgrading parts of the facility/HVAC systems/Technology and other items that were studied and identified. The campaign would also include a debt reduction and mission component. I am personally very excited for the congregation’s forward thinking on this matter. Why? Because while buildings don’t change lives what happens in them does. And we also reminded ourselves at the annual meeting that for many churches the building and property end up becoming the mission and that at SOC the building and property are tools to help us fulfill our primary mission of MAKING DISCIPLES. Being part of a local congregation and keeping it healthy requires a lot of energy, commitment and passion on the part of those who call it their church home. We are very blessed at Servant of Christ who have that passion, commitment and energy about sharing the Good News of Jesus. It’s a great time to be the church and it’s a great time to be part of Servant of Christ! See you in worship this Sunday! Blessing, Pastor Eric Spring Ahead Daylight Savings Time March 10 Don’t forget to set your clocks ahead 1 hour Saturday, March 9 before going to bed!

Upcoming Preaching Themes Sunday, 3/3/19 ~ “Transformation and Transfiguration” Text: Luke 9:28-36 Theme: Mountain top religious experiences are wonderful. We feel so close to God and it seems like everything is going to be alright. Even after Jesus’ transfiguration it was time for the disciples to leave this mountaintop experience and get back to the events of daily life where 99% of their faith and our faith is to be lived out. Questions to Think About as You Read:  Have you ever had a “mountain top” religious experience?  Why do we sometimes think that God is present only in the mountain top experiences and not in the everyday stuff of day to day living? Ash Wednesday Wednesday, 3/6/19 ~ “Ashes, Ashes We All Fall Down” Text: Psalm 51:1-17 Theme: Ash Wednesday is the beginning of the season of Lent. The words of this Psalm and the ashes on our foreheads are tangible reminders of our need for God. While Christmas and Easter are “Holidays” you don’t see signs that say “Merry Ash Wednesday” or “Happy Ash Wednesday”. Yet, in a very deep way Ash Wednesday bring great meaning and understanding to Christmas and Easter.

Sunday, 3/10/19 ~ “Reckless Love—Why We Do What We Do” Text: Psalm 66:1-4 Theme: The worship service on Sunday mornings is set up in a particular format on purpose. It’s not just something the musicians and pastors figure on Sunday morning when they get to church. Come and discover the real reasons behind the form and flow of the service and see why we do what we do is so important. Questions to Think About as You Read:  Is there one part of the service that is typically more important that another to you?  In what part of the worship service do you typically engage in the most? Wednesday, March 13—Lenten Worship 7:00 pm Faith Testimony Larry Berqual

Sunday, 3/17/19 ~ “Reckless Love-Exercise, I Thought You Said Extra Fries” Text: Hebrews 10:23-25 Bringing Communion to People in Their Homes! Please let Pastor Eric or Pastor Melissa know if there is a Servant of Christ member unable to attend worship due to medical reasons. The Pastors would be happy to bring communion to them in their home. Just call the church office at 763-427-5070.

Theme: Whether getting in shape or recovering your strength after an illness, exercise and/or physical therapy is important. We have spiritual muscles just like physical muscles and it’s important to exercise them if we are to stay spiritually healthy. Questions to Think About as You Read:  What spiritual habit would you like to acquire  What prevents you from acquiring that spiritual habit? Wednesday, March 20—Lenten Worship 7:00 pm Faith Testimony Carol Smith

worship & learning Upcoming Preaching Themes Sunday, 3/24/19 ~ “Reckless Love—Beyond Ripped Jeans and Cool Glasses” Text: Hebrews 13:5 Theme: Through history the form of worship has changed but the function has not. Whether the worship leader is wearing ripped jeans and cool glasses, a suit or a robe of some kind the role of worship is the same: To worship The Lord. It can be easy for worship to become a show, a show that feels like a rock concert or a show that feels like a clip out of an old movie. The goal is for worship to actually be worship and not entertainment. Questions to think About as You Read:  What is the difference between entertainment and worship?  Who is worship really for and why do we think it’s all about us? Wednesday, 3/27/19 ~ Lenten Worship 6:30 pm Faith Testimony Todd Johnson

Sunday, 3/31/19 ~ “Reckless Love—Habit Forming” Text: Psalm 118:24 Theme: Regular worship is one of the easiest habits to get out of and one of the hardest to get into. Still regular worship is an important spiritual discipline and core value to maintain because it reminds us to keep God first.

Learn about the meaning of baptism and how to arrange for baptism here at Servant of Christ. We invite all ages to be baptized. Classes are held on the first Sunday every other month at 12 noon in the Family Room at the back of the Sanctuary. The next Baptism class is March 10 June 2

Questions to Think About as You Read:  What reasons do people use to not go to church?  How many of the excuses are lame? Servant of Christ is hosting a monthly Game Night in the Fellowship Hall. Bring a game to share or learn a new game. Come alone or with friends and family. Do you know someone who loves games? Share the news of Game Night at SOC! Upcoming Game Nights Sunday, March 10 at 3:00 pm Sunday, April 14 at 3:00 pm Sunday, May 19 at 6:30 pm We play a variety of games like Chronology, Codenames, and Wizard. There was Ping Pong, and even a Cribbage match. There was a camel race and a horse race too – OK, not literally, but some gamers played Camel Up and Long Shot, two betting games involving strategy & a bit of luck too! Join us next time for the fun, fellowship, and friendship! Questions: Contact Julie Rose at 763-458-5709 or [email protected]

New Member Class & Lunch May 5th If you have been visiting or you have been attending regularly we consider you an important part of Servant of Christ and we invite you to consider becoming a member. A new member class and luncheon is scheduled for May 5th, at 12 noon. If you are interested in attending the New Member class, please check “interest in joining” in the black “Friendship Folder” on Sunday morning or contact Barb Ames in the church office at [email protected] or 763-427-5070 (x601 after hours). God didn’t look at our frazzled lives and say, “I’ll die for you when you deserve it.” No despite our sin, in the face of our rebellion, he chose to adopt us. And for God, there’s no going back. His grace is a come-as-you are promise from a one-of-a-kind King. You’ve been found, called, and adopted; so trust your Father and claim this verse as your own: “God showed his love for us while we were still sinners Christ died for us.”(Romans 5:8). This verse is an especially great reminder as we join for worship on Ash Wednesday and hear the words, “From dust you come and to dust you shall return.” We come as we are and Jesus marks us with his cross, forgiving our sins and calling us his brothers and sisters. Or as Paul writes about or adoption into the Family of God in Galatians 4:7, “So you are no longer a slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir through God.” You have been adopted by God so come and claim your inheritance. The inheritance isn’t a million dollars, but something more valuable than that. Your inheritance includes things like – forgiveness of sins, abundant life with Jesus now and the promise of eternal life forever. We have been found, called and adopted as God’s children. Please invite a friend or neighbor to Lent worship on Wednesday evenings at 6:30PM so they can hear individual’s testimonies about how God found, called and adopted them and how they lay claim to their inheritance as Children of God. In Christ, Pastor Melissa

ministry & mission Because of Your Financial Gifts Servant of Christ is Serving God by Serving the Community Because of your generosity, in 2018 Servant of Christ gave away to ministries beyond our walls 10% of what we received, Scripture calls it tithing which amounted to $88,650 WOW! Among the ministries and organizations we support are two that help the most vulnerable young people in our community. They are Hope 4 Youth and Avenues For Homeless Youth. We recently received letters of thanks from both organizations. “Thank you so much! I can’t tell you what your strong, on-going commitment to Avenues means.” Katherine Meerse, Executive Director These organizations are doing incredible work and you and your home church are making an incredible impact. Thank you and keep up the generosity.

Servant Supper Sunday, March 24th 5-6 pm Servant Supper continues to serve an average about 50-60 people each month. This meal is open to everyone. We serve from 5-6:00 p.m. It’s incredible the amount of support and volunteers that have been there each month helping out. Please consider coming to help! Look for sign up on the bulletin board of opportunities. If there are other groups or a few families that want to volunteer in the future for a particular month we would love to have you. Meals are planned, you just need to cook and serve!

HOLY COW SURVEY RESULTS LISTENING POST Julie Rose will present in depth results from the Holy Cow Survey the congregation took last fall. The LISTENING POST will take place in the fellowship hall during the 10:45 worship service and another will take place after the second worship service on Sunday, March 3rd. The results are fascinating and reveal an in-depth look at Servant of Christ.

Lent Schedule & Testimonials Wed 3/13: Dinner 5:30 Worship 6:30 Testimony by Larry Berqual If I only had a better life. I grew up in a good family, going to church and everything was good until… It was March 19th 1970 I was the only one in the car. That afternoon at 5:20 I had an accident with a train only a few blocks from home and it changed my life. It took a long time and a lot of help from God and other but eventually I was able to again say life is good.

Wed 3/20: Dinner 5:30 Worship 6:30 Testimony: Carol Smith

I left home at age 14 with only a 9th grade education and had three sons by age 19. I got my G.E.D. at age 37. Life has not always been easy for me but my faith has kept me going throughout all of the hardships and I’ve always known God was with me and guiding me.

Wed 3/27: Dinner 5:30 Worship 6:30 Testimony: Todd Johnson In the last six years I have undergone many serious health issues. I don’t know if I could have made it through these life threatening situations without the help of our Bible study group, the unwavering faith and love of my wife. The three F’s (faith, family and friends) have emerged and really enriched my life spiritually and it’s still teaching me that this entire journey itself has actually been a true gift from God.

Wed 4/3: Dinner 5:30 Worship 6:30 Testimony: Brad Hansen I had open heart surgery at the rip old age of 42. My story pertains to prayer and faith. After a particular Dr.’s appointment and procedure I awoke to my wife and cardiologist having a very serious discussion. Things were going to get real and real fast. I talked with God a lot along the path to this life altering surgery. After all I had plans. I discovered that what we think the plan is and what God has planned are not always the same.

Wed. 4/10: Dinner 5:30 Worship 6:30 Testimony: Ted Harrison Although my entire life has been a search for answers, a search for a stronger faith, and I can give testimony to how I feel God helped me become one of the best collegiate football players in the country, led me into a successful business, kept my family together during hard times, or how God helped save our three year old son when he was hit by a drunk driver. The story I have to tell now is how God and faith guided me in getting rid of cancer. At a time when life was at its busiest my health started to fall apart. I associated it with age and lack of exercise. As I started listening to God and going into the directions he led me I was able to find I had cancer, what to do for it, and it eventually going away.

Confirmation Rehearsal & Service Dates 9th graders – MARK YOUR CALENDARS! Rehearsal: Friday, May 17th from 6-8pm for Parents and Students. Pictures for students and small group leaders will be during the rehearsal (parents, bring checkbooks to order pictures that night). Service: Saturday, May 18th at 10am (students arrive at 9:15am). The service usually lasts about 1.5 hours. Grace and Peace to you all! Lately I’ve been thinking about the story of Jonah. God had a plan for Jonah, God made that plan known…and what did Jonah do? Jonah was afraid and chose to run away. Many of us will recall this story from a sermon, or from our Sunday School days. In case you aren’t familiar, know that Jonah winds up running from God’s plan, gets in a ship and heads in the opposite direction. Through a series of unfortunate events, Jonah ends up in the belly of the whale, repents to God, and is spit up on the shores of the country where God called him to go. As Pastor Melissa and I continue to plan for the intergenerational mission trip, we are eagerly waiting for people to accept God’s call. We currently have NUMBER signed up for the trip, and we are overjoyed at the opportunity to serve God alongside these folks in Southside Chicago this July 27-August 2. We also know that some of you are still running from God’s plan. Maybe your story ends up like Jonah, and God’s plan is irresistible to you. Or perhaps you’ll escape the jaws of the whale and continue in your ship heading the opposite direction. In the end of Jonah’s story he sees a fantastic, miraculous changing of a nation – all of Nineveh repents and follows God. I believe in this intergenerational mission trip. I believe in the relationships that have been forged stronger and stronger every year, and I believe in the power of the Holy Spirit to continue to transform the community, and to continue to transform us. My prayer for you is that you hear God’s call, you latch on to his promise of boldness (2 Timothy 1:7), and you step out in faith to see the wondrous transformation that God has in store for you. Yes, the mission trip deadline has passed – but deadlines have never gotten in God’s way before. Come and talk to us, sign up, & join us this summer! Peace in Christ who saves, Calvin Konop

Greetings 10th – 12th Grade Students! Hoping to meet all of you soon! Grace and peace! Anne Schaefer

music ministry Lyrics to “Tremble”

Tremble. . . ~ Cathy Yseth

Peace, bringing it all to peace The storm surrounding me Let it break at Your name

“His lightning lights up the world; the earth sees and trembles.” Psalm 97:4 The Contemporary Band will be sharing a song called “Tremble” with you in March. The song is by Mosaic MSC. With so much darkness in this world, it is reassuring to sing songs about Jesus’ light. The song is based on Psalm 97:4. Jesus’ power is above all circumstances, relationships and experiences. It is one of many songs that we will share with you about the light of Jesus through the darkness, during the season of Lent. Thank you to the Lenten band who will be leading the music on Wednesday evenings throughout Lent. The group consists of: Barb Auer, Brooke Auer, Greg Poling, Tom Rennaker, Matt Harikian, Heather Shaver, Kathy Sorenson, Susan Huemann and Ar Stevens. They will be leading these songs during worship. Lent 2019 Opening: Communion: Closing:

Have a most blessed Lent, everyone. I pray that you will experience the light of Jesus through prayer, daily devotional time, worship, spiritual friendships and song.

Come join us starting at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, February 8th through Saturday, February 9th at 3:00 p.m. Bring your scrapbooks/photo albums, sewing, card making crafts, beading, yarn etc… stay the whole time or come and go as your schedule allows.

Jesus, Jesus, You make the darkness tremble Jesus, Jesus, You silence fear Jesus, Jesus, You make the darkness tremble Jesus, Jesus Breathe, then call these bones to live Call these lungs to sing Once again, I will praise Jesus, Jesus, You make the darkness tremble Jesus, Jesus, You silence fear Jesus, Jesus, You make the darkness tremble Jesus, Jesus
