From the Pastor John Vannorsdall tells the story of a large barn he once owned. The ground floor of the barn, where they once kept the horses and cows, had a concrete floor which was very uneven. Some places were too low, others too high and the finish was very roughly textured. One day the previous owner dropped by for a visit, and they were touring the barn when the man said, “I suppose you have wondered why this floor is so rough.” He couldn’t deny that he had noticed it. “It was the worst day of my life,” the man said, “or at least one of the worst. I had set up the forms and ordered the concrete for the next morning. I had on my old boots and a big cement hoe and when the cement truck arrived I told them I was ready. They opened the gate and the concrete just poured down the chute. I worked as hard as I could. I called my wife. We both worked until we thought our hearts would break. We just didn’t realize how heavy concrete is and how much of it comes in one truck. The worst thing in the world is to attempt an impossible task. That’s why this floor looks the way it does.” To attempt an impossible task is enough to break our heart. But today, we remember that whatever life throws at us, we are not left alone – Jesus lives and is with us. So, as we reflect on our daily life, it is possible that we have fallen short of what we could have done for God, or ignored opportunities for good, or chosen to take our life in a different direction because we felt that what we wanted was more important than living in harmony with God’s way. We have sinned, but we do not admit that with despair, because Someone who loves us completely gave himself in our place on the Cross, and came back from death to assure us that we can be forgiven of everything. Restoring our relationship with God is not an impossible task. Jesus lives and is with us.

As we look at the world around us, it seems full of uncertainty and danger. We want our home to be a place of love and peace and hope to protect ourselves and our children from all the dangers of the world outside. So, how can we prepare those in our home to live among selfishness and materialism and temptation? Today we are reminded that it is not an impossible task. Each time we invite Jesus into our home in prayer, and forget our self to serve those we live with, each time we forgive and sacrifice for those we love the most, we celebrate the fact that we are not alone in our efforts to be different from those around us who do not know that Jesus lives and is with us. Perhaps this Easter we feel the terrible sadness of losing a loved one, or having been betrayed by someone we trusted. We know we cannot return to the way things were in happier times. But, what we celebrate today reminds us that we have so much to look forward to. One day, we will see our loved one again as Jesus gives them back to us alive. One day, the pain of being treated unfairly will give way to a love that sees only the good in every person and in every situation. Jesus lives and is with us, promising that the difficulties of this life are only temporary. Love does not die. Life is often uneven and rough and it can break our heart. But, today we celebrate the fact that we are loved with a love so powerful that it overcomes weakness and sin and despair. Finding hope is not an impossible task because Jesus lives and is with us and he will gently lead us every day until that moment when we join him in our rightful place with him in the glory of God’s love in heaven. –Fr. Stephen W Bierschenk

News & Events St. Monica welcomes Fr. Iñigo Lopez! I was born and raised in Pereira, Colombia. I attended St. Pius X Seminary in the Archdiocese of Villavicencio where I was ordained in November 2000, during The Great Jubilee Year. I also earned my license in religious science and ethics from the University of Juan de Castellanos. My time in the priesthood has been spent partially as a pastor of a parish in Colombia and partially traveling the world on missions in countries such as Ecuador, Venezuela, Mexico, France, Belgium, Uganda, Taiwan and China. I enjoy reading, watching movies, painting, riding horses and drinking coffee. I am privileged to be at St. Monica and I like the diversity and engagement the community offers. Through the ministry leaders I have already come to learn that the parishioners are very mature in their faith. I feel renewed working here. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Me siento renovado trabajando aquí.

Llame a mi esposa.

–Fr. Stephen W Bierschenk
