PARISH ROADMAP FOR EVANGELIZATION & DISCIPLESHIP Taking the next step forward as a parish community to more deeply live out evangelization

Our Mission: Be Disciples. Make Disciples. In welcoming all, we form disciples who know, love, and serve God and neighbor.

Who is a disciple? A disciple welcomes God's people, encounters Jesus Christ, grows in Jesus Christ, serves God's people, and shares the Gospel.

“COME, FOLLOW ME.” - MT. 4:19 | “GO, MAKE DISCIPLES.” - MT. 28:19 As Catholics, Jesus calls us to be disciples and to make disciples. Making disciples is called evangelization. Evangelization is at the heart of all our ministries at Good Shepherd because evangelization is at the heart of what it means to follow Jesus Christ. Moving forward as a parish community, let’s reflect together on the five characteristics of being a disciple: welcome, encounter, grow, serve, and share. What is the purpose? We are seeking a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ and a greater urgency in living out our Catholic calling of evangelization. RITE OF SENDING TO THE BISHOP Rite addressing Catechumens and Candidates at 11:00 AM Mass March 3 “Today we celebrate the Rite of Sending of Catechumens and Candidates to the Bishop. We look forward to celebrating the life-giving mysteries of our Lord’s suffering, death, and resurrection. As we journey together to the Easter Sacraments, the Elect and these Candidates will look to us for an example of Christian renewal. Let us pray to the Lord for them and for ourselves, that we may be renewed by one another’s efforts and gather for the Easter Vigil to share in their joys. We join them in praying for purity of heart.” Father Richard ASH WEDNESDAY End of Short Ordinary Time and the Beginning of Lent March 6 “Ash Wednesday begins the Season of Lent. Ashes remind us of our human mortality and our need for salvation in Christ. The disciplines of prayer, fasting and almsgiving in these forty days strengthen us to turn from sin and toward God. We enter into the desert of our lives with the power of God to resist the temptations of the evil one. Our response to God’s grace through daily conversion and true repentance brings hope and trust in God’s mercy. The willingness to change makes us disciples whose hearts are open for new life at Easter.” Father Richard PASTOR’S VISION STATEMENT The Catholic Community of Good Shepherd is intentional about evangelizing and making disciples in the spirit of Saints Francis and Clare, especially by seeking out the lost in need of reconciliation and conversion of heart to God, the Church, to oneself and others, so that all may experience the peace and joy of a personal relationship with Jesus.

World Day of Prayer for Consecrated Life On Friday, February 1, Bishop Michael Olson joined men and women from various religious orders and communities in the Fort Worth Diocese for Evening Prayer and Dinner as a thank you for service given to the Diocese. Photo: NTC/Rodger Mallison This service is held annually around the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord (February 2). This Catholic feast day commemorates Jesus as an infant presented to the Temple as a first-born son, as part of the Jewish Tradition and Law of Moses. This day is associated with religious orders, as men and women being presented to the service of God in a particularly meaningful way. Religious orders present included the Franciscan Friars TOR (various Provinces from the US, India, and Mexico, all serving in the Fort Worth Diocese), Sisters of St. Mary of Namur, and Lovers of the Holy Cross, among others. Each consecrated man and women in attendance received a gift and prayer card with the following prayer: God our Father, we thank you for calling men and women to serve in your Son’s Kingdom as sisters, brothers, religious priests, consecrated virgins, and hermits, as well as members of Secular Institutes. Renew their knowledge and love of you, and send your Holy Spirit to help them respond generously and courageously to your will. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. For information on vocations, contact Fr. Jason ([email protected]) or visit gscc.net/vocations, fwdioc.org/vocations, or franciscanstor.org. For details on our Vocations Icon (seen at Sunday Mass) and an opportunity to pray as a household for vocations, visit gscc.net/vocations.

Parish Movie Night!

Sun, April 7 | 12:30 - 2:30pm | GSCC’s Upper Room Are you new at Good Shepherd, or do you want to learn how you can get connected with one of our various ministries? Come join us for our New Member Welcome Gathering! You will meet the priests, staff members, and ministry leaders from Good Shepherd as well as learn more about our parish and our mission. An optional tour of our church and campus will be provided as well. A light brunch will be served. No RSVP required!

Sun, March 31 after 4:00pm Mass | Parish Hall

Whether you are a new member or a long-time parishioner seeking to get more involved, you are welcome to join us! We hope to see you there.

Join us for dinner and a viewing of a new film, Sign of Contradiction, in which Fr. Dave Pivonka, TOR (from The Wild Goose) guides us through the life of St. Francis. About the movie: "This film is about presenting a real person, not just some characterization of an animal loving Saint from a distant time. Francis is a person who, like us, searched for purpose and meaning and was often times left empty. It wasn’t until he encountered Christ that darkness and confusion were replaced with light and peace." View the trailer and learn more about the film at signofcontradiction.com. RSVP at gscc.net/signofcontradiction

Advertising Opportunity We are in the process of updating our annual Guide Book & Directory for Good Shepherd. This book will contain everything pertinent to our church (ministries, liturgical information, Parish Roadmap details, etc.) plus a directory of members. This book is being provided and direct-mailed to each family at no cost to Good Shepherd, and it is again being subsidized by local businesses that advertise. If you own or manage a business and would like to find out about advertising in our book, please contact Liz Origenes at [email protected]. Recent survey results by Guide Book Publishing show that 92.1% of families would rather patronize a Guide Book & Directory advertiser over a non-advertiser. It “will pay” to advertise in our new Guide Book & Directory!

Update Your Contact Information! Does our parish database have YOUR family membership record correct? Here is your chance to update your record for our annual Guide Book & Directory (if you haven’t already done so). It is time for us to update our database with any changes, additions, or deletions that may have occurred in your family over the past year. Have you changed your phone number? Have you moved? Are you preparing to move soon? Are all of your children still at home and are they all included in your membership record? Do you want your record published? If you have not already informed the parish office about changes to your record, please contact Bryan Trachier at [email protected] to let us know now so that the information in the Guide Book & Directory is up-to-date and correct. Thanks for your help!

This includes special USCCB resources, such as: Six Ways to Evangelize During Lent and God’s Forgiveness (a two -page guide to help understand the Sacrament of Reconciliation).

Shepherd’s Teaching: The Sacrament of Reconciliation (Part 1) Who originated the Ministry of the Catholic Church? Christ instituted the Ministry of the Apostles as told in the Gospels. The Church has continued the Ministry of Christ and his Apostles. When did the Church begin the Ministry of Christ and his Apostles? Pentecost is the birthday of the Church when the Holy Spirit empowered the Church to minister in the name of Christ and his Apostles. From its apostolic origins the Church has continued to develop its Sacred Tradition through both oral teaching and written Scriptures.

Who represents Christ and his Apostles in the Ministry of the Church today? Priests and Bishops are ordained to act in the person of Christ the Head of his Body by ministering to the Members of his Body, the Church. The whole Church works together with Christ to build up the Kingdom of God in the power of the Holy Spirit and united to God, our Father. How do we in the Church maintain our Catholic identity through ministry? The Liturgy of the Mass, the seven Sacraments, and the daily Prayer of the Hours is the public work of the Church that identifies us as Catholics. The Mass, the Sacraments and the Prayer of the Hours preserve our Catholic ecclesial communion that binds us together as a church. What is the relationship between the Church and all of the Sacraments? The Church embodies the mysteries of our faith in art, architecture, music and sacraments, which are signs and symbols of what we believe. Sacraments are visible signs of invisible grace, signs instituted by Christ that point to our human encounter with Christ in all the Sacraments. Just as the divine Son of God is incarnated as human, so the Sacraments are incarnated signs of Christ living among us in sensate, palpable ways. What does the written tradition of the Scriptures tell us about the Sacrament of Reconciliation? “Be reconciled to God.” (2 Cor. 5:20); “Be reconciled with your brother.” (Mt. 5:24); “If we say, ‘We are without sin,’ we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.” (1 Jn. 1:8)

This Shepherd’s Teaching from Father Richard is an excerpt taken from “The Sacrament of Reconciliation” which is available in its entirety at gscc.net/shepherds-teachings. Check back here in the bulletin next month for part 2.

One day St. Teresa of Avila heard someone say: "If only I had lived at the time of Jesus... If only I had seen Jesus... If only I had talked with Jesus..." To this she responded: "But do we not have in the Eucharist the living, true and real Jesus present before us? Why look for more?" Come to Eucharistic Adoration and spend an hour in prayer in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ, present in the Blessed Sacrament - Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity.

A disciple SERVES God’s people. We give our grateful response to God’s gifts through a life of service to God and neighbor by daily personal prayer, by generously supporting the needs of the Church, and by participating in parish ministries and initiatives. Be Disciples. Make Disciples.

Prayer Shawl Ministry

If you like to knit or crochet and are looking for a way to answer God’s call to serve, then please consider becoming a member of Good Shepherd’s Prayer Shawl Ministry. This ministry is a wonderful way to demonstrate God’s love, comfort, and mercy to people experiencing difficult times. Members of the Prayer Shawl Ministry typically meet the 1st Wednesday of each month at 9:30am in Room 5 to knit and/or crochet as a group and pray over the shawls and lap blankets. If you prefer to knit or crochet prayer shawls and lap blankets on your own and then give them to our Prayer Shawl Ministry to pray over, simply bring your creations to the Parish Office, where you can complete a donation card. Donations of regular worsted yarn are always appreciated! For more information and to donate yarn, please contact Ann, Lead Minister for the GSCC Prayer Shawl Ministry, at [email protected]. Join us at our next gathering! Wed, March 6 | 9:30am | Room 5

Experience Christ’s Loving Care In addition to the cold weather outside, many people experience winters in their personal lives. A recent loss through death, divorce, or relocation may leave them feeling lonely. A hospitalization, a cancer diagnosis, or ongoing medical problems may leave them feeling isolated. The loss of a job, the fear of layoffs, or a financial setback can devastate one’s self-esteem. Family and personal struggles may leave them with nowhere to turn for support. If you are going through a difficult time, our Stephen Ministers can bring God’s warm love back into your life. They provide confidential, one-to-one Christian care. They will meet with you privately on a weekly basis to listen, to support and encourage you, to pray with and for you, and to walk with you for the duration of your crisis. To find out more about Stephen Ministry and how you or someone you know could be matched with a Stephen Minister, visit gscc.net/stephenministry. Our Stephen Ministers are ready to care for you!

Become a Stephen Minister

Feel the Warmth in Stephen Ministry

Sometimes it takes more than a parka or a blanket to keep another person warm. Sometimes it takes the presence of a caring Christian friend. Stephen Ministers share the warmth of God’s love with those who need it most: the lonely, the depressed, the grieving. Is God calling you to reach out to those who are hurting? Consider serving as a Stephen Minister. Visit gscc.net/stephenministry

Grow Ministry Spotlight ADULT FORMATION, Scott D

Tell me about your ministry and what your ministry does. “I write and teach bible studies for adults on Thursday evenings. Both Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict (probably one of the top theologians of our time) both stressed the need to understand the Bible. I am not saying that they believed in solo scriptura, the Protestant based belief in scripture alone, far from that. However, they believed that an understanding of Scripture was necessary because that is God’s love letter to His creations. Even sacred Tradition has its basis or warrant in Scripture. For instance, we do not see the term Original Sin in Scripture, but by putting certain verses together, one can understand how the Tradition of Original Sin resulted. The same can be said of Purgatory, the Trinity, and other Catholic based teachings.” Why did you join this ministry? “When I was preparing for retirement from a 30+ year career in Public Accounting, I felt called to get my Masters in Biblical Theology. I completed that program in November 2017. In addition, I felt that one of my charisms was the ability to get up in front of people and speak. It seemed like a natural progression to get involved in teaching at some level. Father Richard asked me to speak with Tammy Sandoval and it seemed like teaching at the parish level was a good start. In terms of writing courses, I felt that the available courses required too long a commitment on the part of the parishioners. I started writing courses that were eight weeks in length to fill this void. I wrote and presented an 8-week course on the Gospel of Mark in the Fall, and I am in the process of writing an 8-week course on the Life and Writings of St. Paul that I will be giving in the Spring.” [This course is currently in session.]

Find Healing & Hope

How have you GROWN in Christ through your ministry? “Every time I wrote a paper in my Masters program, I felt like I learned so much more about God’s Word. The same is true for writing and preparing to present Bible studies. Every time I delve into Scripture, I find some nugget of knowledge that I did not see before.” How have you helped others GROW in Christ through your ministry? “I truly believe that it is not me who is helping others GROW, it is the Holy Spirit working through me. As St. Paul wrote in Galatians 2:20-21, ‘I have been crucified with Christ; yet I live, no longer I, but Christ lives in me.’ I do believe that there is a hunger to understand the Word of God and how Catholic doctrine fits within that framework. In my courses, I try to show how the two (Bible and Catholic doctrine) are connected.”

Social Justice “Learn the meaning of the words, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice!’” Matt. 9:13 What are you giving up for Lent? What does God wants you to sacrifice? (Hint: it’s harder than giving up sodas or wine!) “I desire mercy, not sacrifice!” • What is harder – being merciful (compassionate and charitable) with a vulnerable person or giving up sweets and sodas? • Which vulnerable people will receive your mercy during Lent? • An immigrant family? A homeless family? A hungry family? As an example, to be merciful with immigrants, volunteer with organizations like GRACE, Justice for Immigrants (justiceforimmigrants.org), and Catholic Charities Fort Worth To work for justice for immigrants (removing root causes of misery), contact your local, state, and federal elected officials. Advocate for refugees seeking asylum. Continue working to build God’s kingdom on earth -- a just society living in holiness. If you are performing works of charity and mercy now, what more can you do? • Work for justice in God’s Kingdom on Earth! • Join the Social Justice Ministry to help solve root causes of injustice by contacting Robert Torres at [email protected]
