MARCH 3, 2019

THE EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME THE LORD BECAME MY PROTECTOR. HE BROUGHT ME OUT TO A PLACE OF FREEDOM; HE SAVED ME BECAUSE HE DELIGHTED IN ME. PSALM 18:19-20 The fruit of our speech and actions will wither and die (1, Ps) unless we first recognize the plank in our own eye (3). By humbly admitting our own sins, we can more fruitfully persevere in the work of the Lord (2). FIRST READING—SIRACH 27:4-7 One’s speech shows the bent of one’s mind. Praise no one before he or she speaks. PSALM—PSALM 92 Lord, it is good to give thanks to you. SECOND READING—1 CORINTHIANS 15:45-49 We are given victory over death through Jesus. In the Lord our labor is not in vain.

THE INSIDE SHOWS In this third Sunday of our reading from the Sermon on the Plain, Jesus speaks of the inner soul and its outer expression. He uses images as he teaches. He addresses all of us. Jesus sees a plumb line connecting the soul with the soul's expression-words and actions. He uses exaggeration to drive home his point. We are urged to clear out the debris that blinds us. He knows that we have an uncanny ability to be blind to our own weaknesses, though they be as big as a board. He knows, too, how willingly we seem to ferret out others' smallest speck-like flaws. And this, too, is for our general consumption; solid old goodness and solid old badness will show eventually. The old Latin saying, which echoes Jesus images, is true: What is bred in the bone will out in the flesh. By and by, the inside will show through. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

GOSPEL—LUKE 6:39-45 A good person produces good, an evil person produces evil. The mouth speaks from the goodness of the heart.

PLEASE PRAY for the repose of the soul of Bonita Elizabeth Petty, the mother of Grace West. Bonita passed into eternal life on February 20, 2019.

T REASURE S T FROM OUR RADITIONS

Many Catholics who are not active in the Church will still seek out ashes this Wednesday. Likewise, many Jews who are not otherwise observant will follow the Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur, with great exactness, fasting and refraining from work and entertainment. People customarily dress in white as a symbol of purity and a reminder of God’s promise that our sins will be made white as snow. While the overture to Ash Wednesday for Christians may be a festive Mardi Gras celebration, for Jews it is the New Year feast of Rosh Hashanah. Ten days before the Day of Atonement to God, people are expected to repair breaks in human life. These are days for offering forgiveness and seeking to repair harmed relationships with family, friends, or coworkers. Everyone is expected to seek out someone and clear the air by asking for understanding for any mean words or thoughtless deeds in the past year. Perhaps the ashes you receive will be invested with deeper meaning if you follow a similar plan. This year, Rosh Hashanah will be September 29, and Yom Kippur October 8. A conversation with some Jewish friends or neighbors about their experience of a season of repentance may be a blessing on your Lent. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

GRANT US, O LORD, WE PRAY, that the course of our world may be directed by your peaceful rule and that your Church may rejoice, untroubled in her devotion. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. 3

UNBOUND THANK YOU!

Unbound and I, Fr. Jerry Beat, want to thank you the parishioners of St. Joseph Parish for your kindness, hospitality, and generosity last weekend. Your response to my invitation to sponsor a child, youth, or elderly was inspiring. Because of you 53 poor families in other countries have been injected with new HOPE. And, your families will be more graced by God. Others may still sponsor online with the information in the bulletin insert of last Sunday. Again, Muchas Gracias to staff members and parishioners! Fr. Jerry Beat

His family immigrated to the US, and Tony learned to do everything with his feet including playing the guitar. Tony travels with his brother Jose and together they share with young and old their story and music. Tony has presented in all 50 states and 44 countries as well as doing World Youth Day. Come see for yourself what then Pope John Paul II applauded as a message of hope and inspiration. See flyer on page 8. Join us for this free event on: • Sunday, March 24, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. • Monday, March 25, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. with Adoration from 8:00 to 8:30 p.m. • Tuesday, March 26, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. with Reconciliation and Music from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Come hear Tony's message of hope, faith, and encouragement!

EIGHTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME

ENCOUNTER LENT

Lent will begin this week with Ash Wednesday, March 6. This Lent our parish community will participate in Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowl, a program of prayer, fasting, learning and giving. The basic plan of CRS Rice Bowl is to eat a simple meal once each week in Lent and give the money you did NOT spend on a normal meal to fund CRS programs of relief, education, health and development. Use the LENTEN CALENDAR (folded inside the cardboard rice bowl) to enrich your Lenten journey. PRAY as a family, reflecting on the role we each have to play in building up God’s one human family. READ the personal stories of people who benefit from the work of Catholic Relief Services. PREPARE simple, meatless meals enjoyed by your neighbors in other countries using the weekly recipes in the Lenten Calendar. GIVE sacrificial contributions as suggested in the weekly reflections, or set your own goals for your personal Lenten sacrifice. VISIT crsricebowl.org for more information. One dollar a day for 40 days of Lent means: 1 month of food for a family, 2 years of seed for a farmer, 1 emergency kit for refugees. Members of the Social Justice Commission will distribute the 2019 CRS Rice Bowl with the attached Lenten Calendars after all the Masses next weekend.

OPENING UP PERSONAL PRAYER: A LENTEN JOURNEY WITH ST. IGNATIUS

This prayer group is for individuals seeking to grow or learn more about personal private prayer. We will learn about the great tools St. Ignatius teaches as we pray with Scripture. If you are looking for a way to deepen your Lenten experience, this might be just the thing for you! The groups meet weekly for 8 weeks and participants commit to at least 15 minutes of daily prayer. The fee is $25, all materials included. Groups are forming in Fayetteville (Monday evenings) and Rogers (Wednesdays mornings). All are invited, Pre-registration is required. For more information, questions or to register please contact: Elizabeth Garrett at 479-236-4011 [email protected] or Debi Snyder at 479-366-7543 or [email protected].

LENTEN OPPORTUNITY

This Lenten Season consider offering at least one hour/week to the spring vigil of 40 Days for Life beginning Ash Wednesday, March 6, through Palm Sunday, April 14. 40 Days for Life is a peaceful prayer vigil in front of the Planned Parenthood abortion center in Fayetteville where faithful Christians peacefully pray from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. seven days a week for 40 Days. Former abortion center director Abby Johnson stated that when people stood in prayer in front of her Planned Parenthood, they would experience as much as a 75% cancellation rate of abortion appointments. Your presence saves lives! Please consider signing up for an hour and if you can. St Joseph will have a signup weekend after all Masses on the weekend of March 9-10. St Joseph has adopted Wednesday, March 13, as St Joseph Adopt-a-Day. That day our parishioners will man each hour from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. For more information call or text Cindy Stophlet at 907-440-6473 or sign up on line at www.40daysforlife.com/fayetteville
