The Service for the Lord’s Day Transfiguration Sunday

March 3, 2019 8:15, 9:30 & 11:00 a.m.

WE GATHER TO WORSHIP

Today we celebrate the Lord’s Supper. Gluten free wafers are available in the narthex and Jane Bell Gathering Space.

Greeting One: The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. All: And also with you. One: Let us prepare for worship.

Kirsten Homdrom

Preparation for Worship

Merciful and loving God, we come seeking quiet communion with you. In this sacred place, apart from busyness and stress, grant us stillness of heart and quietness in your presence. Amen.

Prelude - Deo Gracias arr. Walter Pelz (b. 1926) WMPC Brass Choir; Bob Phoenix, director Christian Welcome and Announcements

Cate Church Norman

Please pass the Friendship Register to your neighbor and include all requested information.

Today is Transfiguration Sunday where we remember a specific event in Jesus’ life as it is recorded in the gospels. As we begin worship today try to remember what you know about this particular event in the life of Jesus. Though we do not talk of it as often as his birth, crucifixion, and resurrection, the transfiguration of Jesus is a singular moment in his life and is set apart in the gospels to remind us of the majesty of the Lord.

Call to Worship from Psalm 99 One: The Lord is King! God is above the earthquakes and the angels. All: Let the earth worship with awe. Let the people praise the name of God. One: Let us seek the face of the holy one, the Lord who hears our prayers and who protects our lives. Today let us believe once more in the decrees of God, the law of the Lord, and the grace of our Savior. May the love of Christ shine upon all people. All: Holy is the Lord our God! DEO GRACIAS is a hymn tune May we lift our hearts in the wonder of grace. most closely associated with *Hymn 189 - O Wondrous Sight, O Vision Fair

DEO GRACIAS

*Call to Confession *Prayer of Confession In the name of Jesus, hear our prayer, O Lord: long ago you spoke to us through laws, prophets, psalms, and proverbs. You have called us to righteousness time and time again. Though we know the right, we struggle to enact the right. Because we have fallen short, we lay our lives at the feet of your mercy. Like disciples shielding their eyes from the piercing light of our Savior, may we ever seek your face. Help us to remember the blinding power of your love. Help us to serve nothing less than your divine grace. Amen. *Assurance of Pardon *Passing of the Peace

Transfiguration Sunday. The text and music date from the 15th century; the modal flair of the melody gives a gravitas to the text that is somewhat lightened by the celebratory rhythms. The tune and the words are crafted together to inspire awe. Our prayer of confession today calls us to name the sinfulness in the world and in ourselves, but it also foreshadows the liturgy we share at the communion table. Just as prophets and lawgivers served as signs of God’s righteousness and love, the table of Christ serves as a sign of God’s righteousness and love.

Communion Meditation - Awake for Glory Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper Invitation to the Table Prayer of Thanksgiving Words of Institution Serving of Bread and Cup

WE RESPOND TO GOD’S WORD

In Presbyterian Reformed tradition there is no altar in any worship space. That is also why we do not have an altar guild. We happen to have two tables in our Sanctuary the old communion table is now a flower and candle table and the new communion table is used for the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper and regularly displays symbols of both of our Sacraments - chalice and plate for communion - pitcher and bowl for baptism.

*Affirmation of Faith from A Brief Statement of Faith, 1983 The same Holy Spirit who inspired the prophets and apostles rules our faith and life in Christ through Scripture, engages us through the Word proclaimed, claims us in the waters of baptism, feeds us with the bread of life and the cup of salvation, and calls women and men to all ministries of the church. In a broken and fearful world the Spirit gives us courage to pray without ceasing, to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior, to unmask idolatries in Church and culture, to hear the voices of peoples long silenced, and to work with others for justice, freedom, and peace. In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit, we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks and to live holy and joyful lives, even as we watch for God’s new heaven and new earth, praying, “Come, Lord Jesus!”

The Presbyterian Church (USA) was divided from the antebellum era until 1983. In celebration of the reunion of the Presbyterian Church (USA) our affirmation today, A Brief Statement of Faith, was written and adopted. This selection is from the final movement of the affirmation. We recite these words in worship throughout the year.

WE GO IN GOD’S NAME

8:15 & 11:00 - Communion will be served by intinction. The elders will stand at the four corners of the sanctuary. Ushers will direct you from the side aisles to the station nearest you to receive the elements. Return to your pew by way of the center aisle. Those seated in the balcony and chancel will begin. Any who cannot come forward will be served in the pew. 9:30 - Communion will be served in the pews. Please hold each element until invited to partake together. As you pass the elements, remember that by the grace of God, Christ calls us and equips each of us to minister to each other.

sound in that morning? O shout glory, glory! I shall mount above the skies when I hear the trumpet sound in that morning. When shall I be delivered from this vain world of sin, and shall hear the trumpet sound in that morning, and with my blessed Jesus drink endless pleasures in, and shall hear the trumpet sound in that morning? Through grace I feel determined to conquer, though I die, and shall hear the trumpet sound in that morning; and then away to Jesus on wings of love I’ll fly and shall hear the trumpet sound in that morning.

Prayers of the People and The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. Presentation of Tithes and Offerings Offertory Anthem (8:15) Jesus, Sun of Life, My Splendor

Georg Frideric Handel (1685-1759)

Jesus, Sun of Life, my Splendor, Jesus, Thou, my Friend most tender, Jesus, Joy of my desiring, Fount of Life, my soul inspiring, At Thy feet I cry, my Maker, Let me be a fit partaker Of this blessed food from heaven, For our good, Thy glory, given. Jesus, Bread of Life, I pray Thee, Let me gladly here obey Thee, By Thy love I am invited, Be Thy love with love requited; From this Supper let me measure, Lord, how vast and deep love’s treasure. Through the gifts Thou here dost give me As Thy guest in heav’n receive me. Are you, holy are you! Rejoice and be glad! Yours is the kingdom of God! (Mt 5:3-12)

(9:30 & 11:00) The Morning Trumpet

Daniel Kallman (b. 1956)

O when shall I see Jesus and reign with him above, and shall hear the trumpet sound in that morning, and from the flowing fountain, drink everlasting love, and shall hear the trumpet (continued)

*** The flowers in the chancel today are given to the glory of God and in honor of Cate Church Norman on the occasion of her installation at WMPC as Associate Pastor for Pastoral Care. Cate will be installed today at 3 p.m. in the Sanctuary. Greeters: 9:30 - Kristin Seale, Brandy Vannoy, Carol Vassey, Ashlyn Whitford; 11:00 Julie Nau, Linda Robinson, Tom Robinson. Ushers: 8:15 - Lydia Pickard (DIC), Stacy Miller, Alva Moore, Charlotte Newby, Celia Poole, Grey Poole; 9:30 - Gregg Thompson (DIC), Tom Elam, Carolyn Elliott, Lisa Garrett, Walt Garrett, Claire Glover; 11:00 - Gregg Thompson (DIC), Roy Teel, Jane Terry, Mary Tyrey, Scott Tyrey, Bob Usry. Service Assistants: 8:15 - Nat Moody; 9:30 - Maddie Wyatt; 11:00 - Sydney Coll. Treasurer’s Assistant: Reed Fountain. Shuttle Driver: Tommy Pittman. Each Sunday, we offer four opportunities for you to worship with us at White Memorial (8:15, 9:30 and 11:00 a.m. in the Sanctuary and 11:00 a.m. OnPoint@1704 in Pickard Hall). While you will notice differences in music, location and worship leadership among our different services, what unites us in our worship is our liturgy. All services use the same Call to Worship, Prayer of Confession, readings from Scripture and Affirmation of Faith.

Hymn 529 is typically sung when celebrating the Lord’s Supper. As you sing it and hear its beautiful melody, think about how every meal is a blessing; every meal is proof of God’s providence. Based on the Hebrew word, hallelu yah, meaning “Praise the Lord,” alleluia has been a word of exaltation to God in the life of the church and was prominent in early Christian liturgies. Because of the penitential character of the season of Lent in the Western church, singing or saying the word “alleluia” has historically been suspended during Lent’s forty days—a practice observed since the fifth century. The absence of “alleluia” during Lent heightens the exuberance of its return at the celebration of the resurrection. Alleluia is appropriately bid farewell (a custom developed in the Middle Ages) on the Sunday preceding Ash Wednesday: the Transfiguration of Our Lord. This is the last Sunday alleluia will be used until the Vigil of Easter, or Easter Sunday.
