The Weekly Newsletter of Bethany Lutheran School Long Beach, CA www.bethanylutheran.org Communication+Responsibility+Organization+Service+Sharing

We’re excited to share our Science projects with you this Friday! I know our students (and parents!) have been hard at work these past couple of weeks. I don’t know about you, but when I was in school, science fair projects typically centered on the Scientific Process: • Question • Hypothesis • Research • Experiment • Results • Conclusion At Bethany’s fair, you will likely also see some projects that use the Engineering Design process: • Define the problem • Research • Determine the constraints • Brainstorm, evaluate and choose a solution • Build a prototype • Test prototype and make adjustments • Communicate results Both processes are important to learning more ABOUT the world, and solving critical problems IN the world. Looking forward to seeing you on Friday! Dr. Fink P.S. Have you purchased golf balls for the drop? It’s not too late!

Bethany Lutheran School Science Fair/Open House Friday, March 9 6:30-8:00 All classrooms, Preschool-Grade 8 will be open. Invite your friends and neighbors!

The FISHin’ Hole Opportunities to Serve

Are you a crafty Pinteresttype person? Dr. Fink needs some help creating some cute bookmarks for the 1st Grade Royal Readers who visit her office each week. Contact her at [email protected] if you’re interested in lending a hand. Brianna Esswein Memorial Golf Tournament News Bethany’s annual Brianna Esswein Memorial Golf Tourney is scheduled for Friday, March 16, at the Lakewood Country Club. Grab some friends and join us for a day on the links! A portion of the proceeds from this event support Bethany Lutheran School scholarships! • Shot-gun start at 1:00PM, so make plans to get there early for various contests offered on that day. • Cost is $125/golfer. Registration forms are available in the school office. • Tee sign sponsors are needed too. These $100 sponsorships can be a business sponsorship or a personal message (i.e. “Karl and Mary congratulate Ryan and Jess on their recent wedding!”) • Something new – spouses or others are able to join us for the dinner and raffle at a cost of $20!

Parent Teacher Conferences We’re getting an early start on scheduling these….please return your forms by March 9.

This month’s chapel offerings will support Habitat for Humanity. This organization began in 1976 with the vision to help those in need of adequate shelter working side by side with volunteers to build decent, affordable houses. The founder of Habitat for Humanity, Millard Fuller, once said, “I see life as both a gift and a responsibility. My responsibility is to use what God has given me to help his people in need.” God bless our cheerful givers! The 2018-2019 School Calendar is attached to today’s newsletter. There are some changes from years past! Please note: • School starts on Tuesday, not Monday. • School ends on June 13, a week later than usual. • The staff inservice day (student free day) is in October, not February as in the past. • We have added some additional days off (Oct. 22, Dec. 21, Feb. 11, March 29, May 24) during the school year.

We had a valuable men’s ring turned in to Lost and Found recently. If you think it might be yours, please contact the School Office with a description.

March is National Reading Month! Use Scrip/gift cards to purchase a book for everyone in your family, and spend some time reading every day. You can use Barnes & Noble Scrip/gift cards in their stores or on-line. You could purchase a NOOK with Scrip/gift cards, and continue using Scrip to purchase books and apps for your NOOK. Amazon.com is also useful when you are searching for something to read. Whatever type or form of reading material you prefer, Amazon.com has traditional books, Kindle eBooks, audio books and textbooks available. We have $25 and $100 Amazon.com certificates on hand to pay for your purchase. When you use Amazon.com Scrip certificates start your shopping at smile.amazon.com/ch/95-2111043 and a portion of your purchase is donated to Bethany Lutheran. When you shop at AmazonSmile and pay with Scrip, the site looks the same, you’ll use your regular account, and prices are the same, but you will receive a tuition rebate and Bethany will receive a donation! Plan ahead and use Scrip for Easter Break and Summer Vacation. Before you book airline tickets check out the Scrip participating airlines. If you use ShopwithScrip.com, American Airlines and Southwest Airlines are available. Delta Airlines is available through traditional card Scrip and online. Planning a cruise? Carnival, Disney, Princess, and Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines have Scrip available to pay for cruises. Many popular hotels are participating Scrip retailers. It is easy to use Scrip/gift cards for hotel stays, simply book your hotel as you normally would and use the gift cards at the hotel to pay for your expenses.
