Between the Lane Lines Olympic Year

I am excited. Every four years the great sport of swimming gets a boost. The Olympics captures our imagination and grips our attention, reintroducing us to sports that don’t seem to get their just due in other years. Don’t get me wrong, football is fun to watch, basketball is a spectacle, baseball is riveting. OK, we could debate that last one. However, nothing compares to the excitement of swimming. There are no timeouts in swimming. Do you remember Jason Lezak’s incredible come from behind victory in the Men’s 400 Freestyle Relay in Bejing four years ago? Or Michael Phelps miraculous win by one one-hundreth of a second in the 100 Butterfly? Or Michael’s pursuit of his record-breaking 8 gold medals? Or forty-one year old Dara Torres’ amazing story of not only becoming the oldest swimmer to reach the Olympics and the first to compete in five, but then to win three silver medals? How can the excitement of four years ago be surpassed? How about watching your own son or daughter or sibling or neighbor or teammate do some of the same exciting and amazing things, right in your own back yard? OK, maybe not the oldest swimmer part, but every summer the Wortham Whitesharks Swim Team provides an opportunity to young athletes and their families to join the excitement of the great sport of swimming. Come from behind victories are just one of the many fun things you will experience as a Whiteshark. Our goal is “to provide healthful recreation, teach responsibility, teamwork, and fair play, build self-confidence in an atmosphere of competitive sports, and above all to have FUN.” We live that goal every day of the season.

Splinters from the Board It is our pleasure to announce that plans to renovate entrances are slowly but surely becoming a reality. We are finalizing our plans but soon work will start to renovate our entrances on Wortham Blvd and N. Eldridge. All of the original columns will be removed and replaced with new as well as the water feature which had a great intent but served to water the streets more than we could enjoy them. The lattice work will also become history and covered with brick to match the existing brick and all of this should give us an updated look. Our (Continued on Page 3) Copyright © 2012 Peel, Inc.

Speaking of Whitesharks and the Olympics, one of our very own will be competing for a spot on the U.S. Olympic team this summer. Neil Caskey is one of the original Whitesharks and once a Whiteshark, always a Whiteshark. How cool is it that a Whiteshark is one of the best swimmers in the world? We will all be cheering for you Neil. With the Olympics around the corner, I am eagerly anticipating the competition and drama of the swimming championships and the surge in popularity of the greatest sport in the world. I am also eagerly anticipating the upcoming Whiteshark season, ready to share another extraordinary year with our returning families and newcomers. Ride the wave of excitement an Olympic year brings and join us for the Fun! Online registration starts March 18 at www.worthamwhitesharks. com. If you have any questions, come see us for registration at the clubhouse on March 25. Wortham Whiteshark Swim Team Registration March 25, 2-4 PM at the clubhouse or www.worthamwhitesharks.com NORTH! Wortham Villages Splinters From the Board- (Continued from Cover Page) existing information boards will go and replaced with LED or HD board, yet to be determined in the very near future. The look will be updated but not ‘out there’ as it will have a fresh look. In addition to all of this we are upgrading all of our ‘greenery’ with new bushes, flowers and all that entails to include trees in front of the bridges so they will be a bit concealed. The M.U.D. is busy as well to help in the efforts. They are added huge rocks to shore up the retaining wall to keep it from collapsing as this is a preventative measure. The work on Wortham is adding a sprinkler system which should be completed soon. These are a great group of people and I can’t speak enough of how fortunate we are to have such a wonderful, caring board and folks with M.U.D. In the end I am sure you will let us know your opinions, good and bad but we bet that most of you will really like and enjoy the changes which once started will take about 90 days to complete. A large part of our responsibility is to keep our costs down and to keep us updated and protect our investments in Wortham. This is all done with that in mind. All of this will cost us in excess of $100,000 and we will pay this in cash in full and again not borrow any money or increase any costs planned at this time. We have the money to fund this project. Thank you all for being such wonderful people, neighbors and

friends. We are Wortham! Wortham, we’re looking good! Make it a great day! See you at my table. By Stan Schoen E-mail: [email protected] February, 2012 Website: www.worthamweb.org

Northwest Flyers Track Club

The Northwest Flyers Track Club will host two free open house / registration sessions for all middle and high school athletes and their parents interested in joining for the 2012 season. The events will be held on Thursday, April 5, and Friday, April 20, from 7:00 – 8:30 PM at Cypress Creek High School, 9815 Grant Rd., Houston. The Northwest Flyers is a youth (ages 6 -18) track organization, affiliated with USA Track & Field. The club provides a full program of “track” events such as sprints, hurdles, middle distance, distance and relays, and “field” events such as long jump, triple jump, high jump, pole vault, discus, shot put and javelin. It is an excellent “off-season” program for young athletes who currently compete on their middle school or high school track teams. The club was founded 25 years ago by Olympic gold medalist

Fred Newhouse to foster the development of youth track & field in the northwest Houston area. Last year, the Northwest Flyers sent 62 young athletes to compete at U.S. Junior Olympics National Championships in Wichita, Kansas and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Neighborhood Watch Corner

The block captains had a well-attended meeting in February. The new deputies assigned to our neighborhood, Deputies P. Boyd (daytime) and J. Sauer (nighttime) were both in attendance and shared their experiences and how they saw the neighborhood – which was in a very good light. They both emphasized the need for neighbors to communicate and report any unusual activity in to the sheriff as soon as possible. Time is a critical component in successfully resolving issues. If you are not sure if you should call them, then call them! We also reviewed activity in our neighborhood and discussed ways to encourage our neighbors to become better aware and more comfortable with reporting unusual activity to the sheriff. Overall, it was a very good meeting and hopes to see more of you at the next one. Our best line of defense is our knowledge of each other, knowing our

6

Wortham Villages Newsletter - March 2012

neighborhood, and understanding when something is not right. Regarding recent activity, there have been several reports of car break-ins and one burglary. . Unfortunately several of these have not been reported to the sheriff which hurts awareness and allocation of extra patrol time. However, we want you to be aware that we get reports every other month or so. Most of these situations involve vehicles that were left unlocked or with valuables in plain sight…both are easy marks for a criminal. Regardless, please report it to the sheriff immediately at 911 or 713 221 6000 or via the HSCO app on your smartphone; iWatch Harris County. Again, our best line of defense is each other’s awareness and involvement. We can always use more block captains on any street. The ones that have none are listed in the newsletter, so encourage your neighbors to

participate. We have block captain meetings 3-4 times a year, which give everyone a chance to meet other in the neighborhood, and give all of us an opportunity to find out what is going on around you. The next meeting will be in May/June. As a side note, I now receive the Wortham Newsletter electronically. It gets there right at the first of the month, often has photos and articles in color, and reads really well on the iPad and PCs. Again, Thanks for Caring! Herman and Shawn
