CHAMBER NEWS The BasTrop ChamBer of CommerCe mission sTaTemenT

‘We BeLieVe in BisD’ campus visits

The mission of the Bastrop Chamber of Commerce is to improve the economy of Bastrop and thereby, the quality of life for all its citizens through economic, community, and leadership development.

President’s Report Dear Chamber and community members, This time last year I was writing about the incredible growth coming to the greater Bastrop area in the way of new subdivisions being platted, our school district nearing 10,000 enrollment and the Bastrop Chamber of Commerce continuing to work closely with the city of Bastrop, keeping an eye on the new development coming our way. We now have those new subdivisions with homes being built and ready for move-in, the Bastrop school district has approximately 10,500 students and the Chamber is still working closely with the city to develop a new Designation Marketing Organization to brand our tourism efforts. Your Chamber is growing as well by adding staffing with a newly created Membership Development Manager position. We will have an announcement about this in the coming weeks. All the evidence points to the fact that we are on the verge of some real growth. Again, I ask “Are you and your business ready for these new opportunities?” Your Chamber’s board of directors is focused on the future with a strategic plan guiding our efforts with quantitative goals spelled out for 2016-2018. Businesses both new and established in the community continue to join the Chamber as they see more value than ever in Chamber membership. Just check out the list of newly approved members, 11 in all and the ones that have chosen to renew their membership in the Bastrop Chamber! Your chamber is now up to 661 active members and growing stronger as the “Voice of business in Bastrop”. Here are some interesting statistics about businesses who are members of a local Chamber. Consumers who are told that a business is a Chamber member are 51

percent more likely to be highly aware of the business and 57 percent more likely to think positively of its local reputation. Also, consumers are 63 percent more likely to buy goods and services in the future from a company they know is a member of a local Chamber. Your Chamber is continuing to have educational opportunities for our membership so check our Chamber website, email blasts and social media for these times and topics. We always want your input, so don’t hesitate to email us with suggestions so that we can mold our programs and services for the needs of our membership. As a member of the Chamber, we continue to strive to provide quality programming to benefit your business. Of course, our monthly luncheon is just around the corner on Wednesday, April 6 at the Hampton Inn & Suites from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Our speaker this month is Mark Webb from the Texas Department of Insurance. He will be talking about the types of insurance you need to help you prepare, respond and recover from disasters and events which have the potential to negatively impact your business. Our newly formed Resource Committee felt this was an important topic with three disasters (two floods and a fire) in 2015. Go online and register or call the Chamber at 512-303-0558. The Bastrop Chamber of Commerce is striving to be on top of issues important to our membership and community. Please check out our weekly email blast, follow us on Twitter and “like” our Chamber Facebook page. Our website at www.bastropchamber.com is continually being updated so check that out as well. We are here working together to build a better businesses community! Sincerely, Becki Womble, IOM President/CEO

CHAMBER NEWS

B.E.S.T. Leadership Class tours Bastrop The fifth session of the B.E.S.T. Leadership Class was synergetic. Finding a way to give the class insights and overview of how municipal government works and how energy industries and utilities work together to provide services to Bastrop County citizens turned out to be easy. The synergy of a panel worked well. Participants on the morning and afternoon panels were provided with a few topics to discuss. The class took it from there. The morning city government panel provided an overview on types of city government, operations of departments, local election process, revenue sources, budgeting process and current projects underway. Questions from the class allowed the panel to expand on details where needed and show the diversity of issues each city faces. The afternoon energy and utilities panel began with their respective organizational structures, ser-

Through questions from the class, it became clear how the organizations work together to serve Bastrop County and how they are planning to address challenges of future growth expected in the county. The city of Bastrop was showcased during the day. Cindye Wolford from the county tourism office

gave a colorful history on the Baron de Bastrop and served as tour guide on a bus tour of the city. Tour stops included the civic center, city hall and the historic downtown district. During the lunch sponsored by the Bastrop EDC, the organization’s executive director Shawn Kirkpatrick enlightened the class on successful economic development projects and what’s ahead
