CATN HOA JANUARY MEETING REPORT The first regular monthly meeting of the Civic Association of Terra Nova (CATN) was held on Tuesday, January 14, 2014.

Directors Reports & Old Business: Security report: The meeting opened with Deputy Sam Orta reporting on two incidents that had occurred in Terra Nova since the previous HOA meeting. On New Year’s Eve, a resident on Slashwood called in to report that a window in the back of the house had been broken. In early January, a physical assault occurred in the play ground park. The investigation of the assault had not been resolved as the parties involved were not cooperating with the police. Director Marrs (Insurance and Security) reported on a trespassing incident that occurred sometime during the Christmas break. Specifically, the gate to the pool area had been broken and someone had been in the pool shed and lifeguard stand. Director Marrs informed the Board that a 10-camera security system had been purchased. Plans for installation of the cameras in and around the clubhouse and pool area were discussed. Clubhouse report: There were several rentals of the clubhouse during December and three rentals were on the books for the month of January. Recreation/ pool report: Water to the clubhouse and pool was turned off during the recent hard freeze to prevent pipes from breaking. Wind screens in the tennis courts have been repaired Copyright © 2014 Peel, Inc.

and have been secured with hog ties. After some investigation, Andy reported that repairs to the lifeguard stands may not be possible, and that the Board may need to consider purchasing a new stand. Financial report: December books will close in January as a few 2013 bills remained to be paid. Overall, the HOA was under the planned budget for 2013, and it was decided that the surplus money would be put into cash reserves. New Business: The Directors discussed revising Terra Nova’s bylaws and deed restrictions. Andy Armstrong, the HOA’s representative from Community Asset Management (CAM), stated he would send a draft of bylaws, which had been drawn up by CAM for another community, for consideration by Terra Nova’s Board. He noted that any revision of the bylaws would need to be approved by 43% of Terra Nova residents, and that revision of the Deed Restrictions would need 51% approval. The Directors have contacted an electrician to get an estimate for electrical work and repairs to be done throughout the neighborhood. Specifically, the electrician will provide an estimate for the installation of the security cameras, the installation of LED lights in Sabrina Park, repairs to the message board and lights at the entry of the subdivision. In addition, the Directors approved expenditure of an amount up to $500 for the repair/replacement of lights in the playground and tennis court areas. President Heaton brought up the topic of rekeying locks to the clubhouse and pool area with keys that are numbered and cannot be duplicated. Since it has been several years since the locks were rekeyed, the directors agreed to obtain bids to have the work done. The Directors also discussed on the issue of landscaping in Sabrina Park. Contract was approved for removal of 13 dead trees in area parks which pose a hazard to park goers. Following the removal of the dead trees, the Board will consider hiring (Continued on Page 2) Terra Nova Community Newsletter - February 2014

of Yard the Month

March YOM winners are the Bradfords at 17830 Deep Brook Drive. This yard is a perfect example of a winter-summer low maintenance yard. It has a variety of greens, and there is nice contrast in height and shape with the many plants and shrubs: nandina, foxtail ferns, society garlic, Aztec grass, monkey grass and more. The flowerbeds are neatly outlined in rock and the lawn is well groomed, and the lovely birdhouses accent it all. Kudos to the Bradfords, our new neighbors.

Meeting Report (Continued from Cover) D.W. Miller Maintenance to design and install landscaping and a water-sprinkler system in Sabrina Park. Lastly, the Directors discussed ways to improve neighborhood communication. Funds were approved to compile an updated neighborhood directory. The directory will be set up as an Excel file that will be available only to Terra Nova residents. On request, the file will be sent by email to the resident, who can then update the directory when new listings become available. A printed version would be available for those residents, who prefer a hard copy. The Directors also discussed the possibility of contracting with a website management company to build and manage a neighborhood website. President Heaton wanted look into how other communities are handling their websites, before discussing the topic further. Disclaimer: The report given above is NOT a record of minutes for the CATN January meeting. The official minutes can be obtained from Andy Armstrong (aarmstrong@ communityassetmanagement.com) once they have been approved by the Board of Directors. The next Quarterly meeting is scheduled on Thursday, March 6, 2014 at 7:30p.m. All residents are encouraged to attend.

Olympic Fever Can Encourage Physical Activity In Children According to an expert at Baylor College of Medicine, the Olympics are a great opportunity for children to learn about physical activity and goal setting. According to Dr. Jorge Gomez, associate professor of pediatrics in the division of adolescent and sports medicine at Baylor, Olympic competitions will encourage children to do something fun and active. "Research has shown that the strongest predictor of children remaining physically active into adulthood is having experiences of being active with their parents," said Gomez. He offers the following tips for parents when watching the Olympic Games with their children: • Point out that the athletes are participating because it¹s fun for them. • Emphasize athletes are where they are after years of hard work. • Discuss what it means to be a team player and to have good sportsmanship. • Focus on the fact that the athletes are fit because they take care of themselves by eating well and exercising. • While encouraging children to explore new activities, keep safety in mind.

The Recipe Box Susan Tsujimoto, Editor I LOVE tomatoes!! …can’t get enough of them, and I can hardly wait to get some planted in my garden. Nothing tastes better that a home-grown tomato!! According to The Old Farmer’s Almanac, early March is the best time to transplant, so it’ll be a couple months before I’ll be able to enjoy some home-grown deliciousness. But lucky for us Texans, tomatoes are available in stores year-round. Here is one of my favorite tomato soup recipes, which is perfect with a grilled cheese sandwich.

Roasted Tomato Soup 5 tomatoes, cored (if necessary) and quartered 1 large red bell pepper, seeded and quartered 2 medium yellow onions, peeled, quartered extra-virgin olive oil 5 plump cloves of garlic, unpeeled fine-grain sea salt 1 cup reduced sodium V8 juice 1 - 2 cups light chicken or vegetable stock 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika Instructions: Preheat the oven to 375°F and position a rack in the middle of the oven. Coat the bottom of rimmed 18” x 13” half-sheet baking pan with olive oil. Arrange the tomatoes, skin side down, on one half of the

baking sheet. Coat the bell pepper and onions with olive oil and put them on the other half of the baking sheet along with the garlic, place the pepper skin side down as well. Give veggies a light showering of salt, then bake until the tomatoes start to collapse and the onions start to brown and caramelize, about 45 minutes. Turn the onions if they start getting overly dark on the bottom .Check on the garlic as well, once the cloves are golden and oozy inside, pull them from the oven. Peel the garlic, dump all of the roasted vegetables into conventional blender or food processor.* Deglaze the baking sheet by adding V8 juice and 1 cup water to the baking sheet. Using a rubber spatula scrape the browned veggie-bits into the liquid. Add the deglazing liquid to the blender and process the vegetables to desired consistency. Add pureed veggies to a soup pot and add the stock, smoked paprika and a bit more salt if needed - adjusting to your taste. Simmer until heated through and serve. Notes: *Depending on the size of your blender/processor jar, you may need to work in batches. If you have a glass blender jar you need to be extra careful that you let the ingredients cool down a little bit before you put them in the glass jar, otherwise the glass could explode and cause serious injury. As with all soups, stews and chilis, this soup is better the day after it’s been prepared.

WATER TIP What Not to Put Down the Drain Have you ever wondered where the stuff you send down the drain goes? Most people think, “out of sight, out of mind”. The wastewater system is designed to handle and process certain types of waste. When things, that are not supposed to be flushed, rinsed or dumped down the drain, enter the wastewater system, they can create serious complications. Some items cause blockages in the collection system, which can cause sewage to back up into homes or to overflow from a sanitary sewer manhole into a yard or the storm sewer system. Some items cause blockages at the treatment plant resulting in inefficient wastewater processing that can have serious environmental consequences. Drugs and other chemicals are not removed by the treatment plant and pass thru to harm fish or other animals and plants in the receiving stream. Please use the following lists as a guide for items that should NOT be disposed of in the toilet or down the drain: Bathroom Products-disposable diapers, tampons, cotton balls, ear swabs, mini or maxi pads, condoms, nail polish, nail polish remover and unused medication (both prescription and over the counter). Chemicals-furniture and metal polishes, motor oil, transmission fluid, antifreeze, rust remover, deck cleaners, solvents turpentine, paint, garden chemicals (pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers), toxic chemicals (if label reads: “DANGER”, “WARNING”, “CAUSTIC”, “TOXIC”, “CORROSIVE”, “FLAMMABLE”, OR “POISON”) In The Kitchen-fats, oil or grease lard/shortening, butter, margarine, coffee grounds, egg shells, food scraps, produce stickers, baking goods, sauces, dairy products, paper towels and rags Miscellaneous-cleaning wipes of any kinds (even if they say they are flushable), facial tissue, bandages, bandage wrappers, cigarette butts and cat litter Copyright © 2014 Peel, Inc.
