INDUSTRIAL A N D ENGINEERING,‘

A. Eucken and L. Meyer for the determination of the calorific value of solids by combustion a t atmospheric pressure. On the whole the articles are of a high caliber and can well be recommended to the American reader interested in these subjects. -PER K. FROLICK Die physikalische Chemie der Kesselsteinbildung und ihrer Ver51 pages, 11 figures. Ferdinand hiitung. B Y R. STUMPER. Enke, Stuttgart, 1930. Price, paper, 4.80 marks. This little volume presents in a concise and interesting manner the viewpoint of the present-day physical chemist on the formation and prevention of boiler scale. It is essentially a summary and a correlation of the results of recent investigations in Europe and America. The author formulates the following intermediate steps in the formation of boiler scale: (1) formation of the solid phase in the boiler water; (2) development of a crystalline condition in the

precipitate; (3) deposition or baking of the precipitate on the boiler SU-es. Prevention of scale is based on making provision to insure that any solid phase developed will satisfy the conditions required for the formation of a sludge instead of an adherent scale. Of particular interest among Stumper’s original contributions are his curves showing the thermal decomposition of calcium bicarbonate and his suggestion for the use of barium aluminate in internal boiler-water treatment. It is not believed that the well-informed American chemist, familiar with the publications of R. E. Hall, E. P. Partridge, A. H. White, and other American investigators, and with modern boiler-feed-water purification practice, will find very much really new material in Stumper’s little book. It would be difficult, however, to find as condensed and interesting presentation of the subject in English; and it is believed, therefore, that the little volume deserves a place in the libraries of American chemists specializing in this field.-A. S. BEHRMAN
