With the passing of the National election a turning point in industrial chemical activity appears to have been reached. The result of the election appears to have removed the uncertainty and hesitancy which have been so prominent during the past year. Although there has been no sharp increase in business in the weeks following election, a better volume of buying is reported in practically all quarters and the sentiment regarding the future is more optimistic. m5th the political policy of the country established for the next four years, industry is preparing for a resumption of activity on a broader scale. Chemical-consuming industries are beginning to order with more assurance and in larger quantities than has been their custom during the immediate past. Buyers are more willing to contract for delivery over the coming year. Prices are assuming a firmer tone and already price changes are more numerous and advances more frequent. Small stocks in makers' and consumers' hands are bases for a stronger undertone in chemicals. The delayed announcement of contract prices in soda ash and caustic soda came about a week after election. Although lower prices were not expected, rumors of possible higher prices had been heard in the trade owing to increased costs of production. The 1925 schedule showed no change from the 1924 prices, however. Contract business is stated to be coming in freely and the prospects are reported bright for 1925. Announcement of bleaching powder and liquid chlorine prices also arrived the same week as the alkali prices. In contrast to the low prices a t which cogtracts were made last year in bleach and chlorine, the new contract prices are considerably higher but a t approximately the same levels at which business has been taking place since early in the year and to which levels prices had recovered after the slump a year ago. Contract business in bleaching will be taken a t $1.90 in car lots of standard drums. Less than carload business will be 15 cents higher, and small drums 25 cents above the standard drum price. Spot works prices are 10 cents above contract prices. Liquid chlorine prices are slightly lower than the recent schedule for large quantities while small quantities are higher. Tank car business on contract is named a t 4 cents a pound; car lots of cylinders, 51/2 cents; less than car lots, 7 cents; ton lots or less, 8 cents per pound; spot works prices, ' / 4 cent higher. Manufacturers of mineral acids are higher in their views and have advanced muriatic and sulfuric 15 cents per hundred for trucking quantities, and 25 cents for nitric acid. Tank car quantities are also firmer a t $14 per ton for 66' BC. sulfuric. Acetic

acid has been moving in better volume a t unchanged prices. 1,actic acid has taken on a stronger tone owing to the rise in corn prices. Oxalic acid has been quiet and unchanged in value. Domestic chemicals have been maintained a t fairly uniform prices, while imported products have been fluctuating slightly. Ammonium chloride has weakened and sales have been reported at 53/4 cents for the imported material. White arsenic is inactive owing to lack of interest since the failure of calcium arsenate t o sell according to expectations last summer. Antimony products have been advancing owing to the r:se in metal due to war activities in China. Lack of demand for barium chloride and carbonate has resulted in lower prices Imported offerings of chloride have been made below $65 per ton, New York. Domestic material has been reduced t o $72.50 ber ton. lmported carbonate is offered a t $55 per ton spot while domestic is held a t $64 per ton, works. Copper sulfate is stiengthening following the rise in metal to 14 cents per pound. L,ead acetate has also advanced owing t o appreciation of the metal. Caustic potash is firm a t the recent higher prices and the outlook is for still higher quotations. Potassium permanganate $as been advanced to 15 cents by both domestic and foreign producers after holding aTound 13 cents. Tin crystals have adTranced following the rise iri tin prices. Demand for intermediates and dyes as shown a decided improvement during the month. Inter1 2diate prices have been holding steady. P-naphthol and p-r .oaniline have been reduced while o-toluidine and o-nitrot ene have been tending upward. Cod-liver oil prices have advanced owing to increased consumption, although the catch this year is reported up to normal.
