Technology that cares

Not all

technology cares like ours

The simple dream of an undisturbed night’s sleep is in the hands of others for those suffering from sleep and respiratory disorders. The need for a mask to deliver therapeutic pressure to your patient while they sleep is only part of the challenge; it’s also about how they feel before and after...

A deeper understanding New patients in particular can feel selfconscious and embarrassed about the new routine they must adopt for sleep – for them, it’s important a mask can deliver as normal and natural experience as possible. Experienced patients on the other hand also know of the hidden challenges a mask can bring. From ease of use to nightly performance – they need to feel confident and content that their mask will enable them to take back their life.

Gel technology Now lighter and smaller than ever before, our soft and pliable gel solutions readily adapt to the contours of the face for an exceptional seal – so patients feel more comfortable, as well as confident in the performance of their mask.

This deeper understanding of not just what patients need, but how they want to feel, is at the center of our design philosophy and the driving force behind our range of masks. Each one is designed to help you and your patients succeed through a combination of unique features and technology. Most of all, it means that after an undisturbed night, they can enjoy unblemished mornings.

Fit, feel and compliance Providing patients with different styles and variations of individual masks, including cushion and frame options, to better engage patients – encouraging them to take a more active role in self management of their therapy.

Improving lives through understanding needs, desires and aspirations is at the center of everything we do at Philips Research. It’s an approach that has led to a century of innovations and awardwinning solutions that put us at the leading edge of health and well-being. Our ever evolving family of masks are designed to treat sleep and respiratory disorders with significant advancements in four key areas vital for patient wellbeing and compliance.

Pressure and seal Facial pressure map research and the use of advanced materials are paving the way for a compromise between two seemingly opposing goals – the need for a continuous seal, while reducing the incidence of red marks on the patient’s face.

Advanced design The innovative under-thenose cushion design redefines comfort by preventing red marks, discomfort or irritation in the nostrils and on the nose bridge. It allows the patient to wear glasses, read or watch TV before sleeping.

Choosing the right type of mask for your patient A comfortable, well fitted mask is key to therapy adherence. There are a number of options available to suit differing needs. The following pages discuss the options available and ways to determine the right choice for your patient.

It is important to choose the right mask for the right patient within the first few months of PAP therapy to lead to increased adherence, which also leads to more effective treatment of obstructive sleep apnoea and its comorbidities, such as hypertension, cardiovascular disease and diabetes1. Clinicians should let the new user become familiar with the mask and allow them to take part in the decision process if applicable.

Nasal

Pillow

Full face

Generally offered as the first option, nasal masks are usually smaller and lighter than full face masks. If higher air pressure is needed, nasal masks can provide better nostril comfort than pillow masks.

A good solution if your patient feels claustrophobic in masks that cover a lot of the face or if your patient has a deviated septum and/or facial hair.

Ideal if your patient suffers from nasal obstruction or frequent congestion due to allergies or cold symptoms. Also suitable for patients who continue to breathe through their mouth at night despite trying the combination of a nasal or pillow mask with a heated humidity feature or chin strap.
